Things went a little better for the "Goose" the following week (March 20) at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car show, and the field was "weak," but Tom's Corvette ran well. He qualified #2 with a 6.79/216 behind Shirl Greer, but he soloed with a 9.47 when Wilfred Boutilier was shut off on the line with an oil leak. In the semifinals, he set Low ET with a 6.62/216.86 that beat Pete Miner's 7.48 in his Duster. In the final, he ran Greer. Shirl had problems and slowed while McEwen ran a 6.65/216.86 for the victory. A week later (March 27), he was in another final. This time it was at the NHRA Division 7 race at Fremont. He lost in the final, but it wasn't too bad, as how many cars were outrunning Don Prudhomme at the time? His 6.33/229.59 lost to the "Snake's" 6.20/240. On May 1, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He lost to Dick Bourgeois, driving the Creasy Brothers car, in the first round. In the final, he faced Tommy Ivo, and McEwen got the victory with a 6.26/190.67. The next day, they did it again, and once again, Tom qualified for the semifinals, this time with a 6.36. He met Prudhomme in his semifinal race and lost to Don's 6.15/205. The following weekend (June 5), he was at Amarillo for the IHRA World Nationals. He beat Shirl Greer before losing to Ray Sherman in the semifinals. At the NHRA Springnationals, his 6.18 qualified #5. Tom failed to reach the finals. He won the IHRA Summernationals at Union Grove on July 4. He qualified #1 with a 6.15 (Low ET), and advanced past the first round with a 6.55/171.75 when Ken Safford fouled in the "Mr. Norm" car. In the semifinals, he beat Tom Prock's 6.52/206 with a 6.34/214.28. In the all Corvette final, Tom ran Jerry Boldenow's "Moby Dick." McEwen's 6.28/218.97 came out on top over Jerry's 6.47/225. That was Tom's first win ever in IHRA competition. He ran really well at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, qualifying #2 to Prudhomme with a 6.14/233.16. His only other pass in qualifying was a 6.23. He beat Bob Pickett in the first round, with a tire smoking 7.13, but he lost to Sherman in round two when he smoked the tires again to a 7.45. McEwen ran at York US 30 on July 16 for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals, but he failed to reach the finals. He qualified #1 at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals with a 6.13. In the first round, a 6.24 beat Boldenow's 6.38. In the semifinals, Tom stepped up to a strong 6.11 and still lost to Gary Burgin's 6.13. On July 31, he was at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals. A 6.31/224 qualified #2 behind Tom Hoover. In the first round, his 6.31/214.79 beat Gene Snow's 6.68/185. Unfortunately, McEwen broke and was unable to run in the semifinals, so Snow got reinstated. He competed at Atco for its Fuel Funny Car Championships. All cars made two runs, with the two lowest ETs coming back for the final. Tom lost his first race to Les Cassidy's 6.63 with an off pace 8.93. He won his second race with a 6.68/174 over Arnie Swensen's 6.78/193. His times were not good enough to advance to the final. On August 21, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open. He qualified #2 with a 6.29, but in round one, his fuel pump broke, and opponent Bill Leavitt advanced. At the US Nationals at Indy, McEwen qualified #6 with a 6.14/230.17. He beat Raymond Beadle's 6.45/200 in the "Blue Max" in the first round, with a 6.20/228.
