Notes: Handout claims 7.50 at 197 best. Confirmed 7.66 at Irwindale. | Pisano's new Corvair was at OCIR for the Manufacturer's Funny Car Open on May 3. Frank's best of 8.11/186.32 failed to qualify. He also failed to make the show at OCIR's Funny Car 500 on May 31. At Irwindale's Race with a Reason on July 12, Frank qualified #1 with a 7.57 in the eight-car show. Unfortunately, the car refused to start in the first round. The following week, on July 19, an 8.30 qualified #12 at the PDA Championships at OCIR. He lost to Gary Gabelich in the first round. A big win came at Irwindale on August 16 over a sixteen-car field. He beat Leroy Hales' 7.80/178 in the first round, with a 7.65/187.50 and a 7.59/184.80 advanced past the second round when Roger Wolford shut off on the line. He singled with a motor saving 9.34/97.93 in the semifinals. In the final, a holeshot 7.62/183.28 beat Gary Gabelich's 7.54/175.09. On this run, Gary's Corvette burned to the ground at the far end of the track. Another first-round loss came on September 13 at an eight-car show at Lions, where a 7.61/182.55 failed to hold back the charge of Gordon Mineo at 7.55/195.22. He lucked out, however, when Rich Siroonian broke after winning his first-round race, as the Low ET loser, he was reinstated to run against Johnny Wright in the semis. Unfortunately, the Corvair came up ailing, mustering a 9.64/95.03 that lost to Wright's 7.33/191. He qualified third with a 7.81 at an eight-car show at Irwindale on September 21. In the first round, he improved to a 7.72/185.94 over Mineo's out-of-shape 8.45/183. In the semifinal, a 7.59/193 by Gas Ronda put the Corvair on the trailer. On October 11, he raced at OCIR for the Funny Car Open. He had an easy (9.14) first-round when Bob Smith lost a transmission. But in the semifinal, both he and Marv Eldridge broke, and Marv won the coasting contest. Frank got a big win at Irwindale for their East/West Championships on October 18. He ran a first-round 7.43/193.96, followed by another 7.43/191.08 in the second round over Larry Reyes' tire-smoking 7.71/198 in the Hawaiian. In the semifinals, a 7.65/192.70 beat Jim Liberman's 7.77/192. In the final, a 7.45/195.64 beat Pat Minick in the Chi-Town Hustler. At the fifth annual East/West Funny Car Championships at Lions on October 25, the little Corvair broke on the line in the first round against Dick Harrell. Irwindale held an eight-car show on November 1, and Pisano qualified fifth with a 7.76. In the first round, a 7.89/179.28 failed to get past Dick Bourgeois's 7.49/191 Low ET of the meet pass. | Formerly listed 195.64 best speed. |
