Notes: Beat Don Garlits in RED debut. Gary failed to qualify at the first OCIR All-Pro race, but at Lions for the opening AHRA Grand American race, he more than made up for it. He qualified with a 6.61 and then beat Don Cook in round one, with a 6.74/196.07. He cut a good light in the second round, and his 6.79/208.33 beat Chris Karamesines' quicker 6.69/222. In the semifinal, Cochran's 6.73/218.97 lost to Don Moody's 6.63, but Moody hurt his engine on the run and could not return for the final, so Cochran got back in on the "break rule.” He faced "Big Daddy" Don Garlits in his new rear-engine car. Gary won with a 6.58/217.91 over Garlits' 6.66/225. He was driving Carl Casper's car at the second OCIR All-Pro race, and he beat Garlits in the final there again. He was not in the field at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, not sure if he skipped this event or if he failed to qualify. The bump was only 7.03, so I would guess he did not attend. He was back driving Casper's car at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, where he took another victory over a 32-car field. The Bakersfield March Meet was another show he competed at in Carl's car. On March 20, he was in his own car for a best-of-three-match race against Tom McEwen at Lions. He won the first race with his 6.63/216.34 nipping McEwen's 6.62/223. In the second race, Gary fouled away a 6.73. In the final race, McEwen smoked the tires, but Cochran lost a rod and the match. The last OCIR All-Pro race was run on March 27. Gary lost to Wiebe in the first round, when he had problems and shut down.
