Notes: Ran 6.39 at OCIR. The team of Gene Adams and Don Enriquez teamed up on a lot of cars over the years, but in '74, they reentered Top Fuel with this Donovan-powered car. Don Long built the 220" chassis. It was the first car the team had that placed the motor behind the driver. Gene loved his early Chrysler Hemis, whether it be 331, 354, or 392, so when it came to picking a powerplant for the team's dragster, of course, he went with the all-aluminum Donovan, which was based on the early Hemi. A Velasco stroker crank brought the displacement up to 485. Inside the engine were Brooks rods and pistons. Steel heads were used with 2/1/8" valves. Cragar supplied the blower drive, and Marc Danekas reworked the 30% overdriven GMC 6/71. An experimental Hilborn injection unit was used. Gene still felt that turbocharging was the way to go, but that would take time to develop. The transmission was from B&J. The team did not travel much, staying close to home in the California area. |
