Notes: Hank was in Portland on June 8 for the Rose Festival. It was an eight-car show, and he qualified #5. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Gaines Markley. In their race, Markley's 6.20/218 beat Johnson's 6.46/220.04. But he ended up getting back into the show when Jerry Ruth blew a rear-end while winning his first-round race. Hank replaced him in the semifinal with the "break rule" in effect. Once again, he lined up beside Markley; this time, Gaines lost a blower belt while Hank ran a solo,6.43/215.82 to advance. In the final, he faced Ernie Hall, and Ernie had just run a career-best of 6.26 to win his semifinal race. Johnson stepped up to 6.17/232.55 (Top Speed) to get the victory over Hall's 6.25. Shortly after that, he was in Seattle for its Olympia Cup Championships. It was another eight-car field, and his 6.41/185.56 qualified #3. Hank set Low ET in the opening round of eliminations, where his 6.17 at 222.77 defeated Gary Egbert's 6.43/227. But in the semifinals, he smoked the tires, and his 7.38/130.40 lost to eventual winner Marley's 6.38/217. At the end of the month, he went to Edmonton, Alberta, for the third NHRA Division 6 race. Unfortunately, Hank's 6.38/226.13 in the opening round lost to Herm Petersen's 6.25/224. Photo from the 1974 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. Ran 6.16 at Puyallup, 6.076/231.36 at Indy, 6.043/237.46 at Ontario. Where were the 5.89/238 numbers run? |
