Notes: Paul was at Rockingham on May 6 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He qualified #4 for the sixteen-car field and beat Don Powell in the opening round. In the second round, his 6.21/207.79 defeated Pat Dakin's 6.41/216, but the run cost him an engine, and he was unable to return for his semifinal race against Jim Walther. He also competed at the IHRA Northern Nationals held on May 20. An easy 7.55 advanced in round one when Gary Dye fouled. In the second round, Paul's 6.70 beat Jack Mitchell. Unfortunately, he lost to Marvin Schwartz in the semifinal. Shortly after that, he was at Beech Bend for its Memorial Championships. His 6.4/223.32 fell to eventual winner Charlie Moulder's 6.35/223 in the first round. He failed to qualify at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He reached the final at the fourth NHRA Division 3 race held at Tri-City. It was an eight-car field, and in round one, he advanced when Walther fouled against him. Dick Lahaie also fouled against him in the semifinal, and Longenecker's 6.76 won over Dick's 6.63. He faced Jon Hansen in the final, and this time, it was Paul's turn to foul. He shut down to 6.70/151.00 in a runner-up finish to Jon's 6.55/224. The PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan, had 40 cars attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car show. Paul's 6.34 qualified #9. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Jim Bucher. The race did not go well for Paul, as the car went into a wheelstand that kept climbing higher and higher until it went over. The car was destroyed. Chassis builder Mark Williams had done a good job, as Paul was able to walk away from the crash. It didn't take him long before he had a new car in time for Indy on September 3 for the NHRA U.S. Nationals. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify at 6.40/221.13. Even with the 32 spots available, 85 cars attempted to make the field. The following week (September 8), he was back at Beech Bend for the final NHRA Division 3 race. He had more problems there as he was unable to break into the eight-car field's 6.59 "bump." |
