Notes: Dave started the year at the AHRA Winternationals at Beeline. In the first round, his 7.35/195 lost to Tom Hoover's 7.24/218. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 7.04/205.48 qualified #5 in the 32-car field. In the first round, he lost to Don Prudhomme's 7.04/222 with a 7.15/214.28. This team did really well on the mid-west UDRA Fuel circuit. Things didn't go so well in May when they were at Tri-City for a UDRA race. A blown clutch in the first round slowed Powers to an 8.96/93.26 that lost to Noel Mauer's 7.55/192. The team also competed at Union Grove for the Olympics of Drag Racing event but failed to reach the finals. On June 30, they were at Edgewater for a UDRA race. Dave had run 7.67/192.70 but lost in the first round. The following week (July 6), he won the UDRA race at Martin, Michigan. He set Low ET and a new track ET record in the first round with a 7.06/198.66 that defeated Dick Lahaie's 7.22/214. In the semifinal, he beat the "Tel-Star's" 7.19/210 driven by Fred Welchman with a quick leaving 7.26/209.88. In the final, he went up against the always tough Mauer & Willis team. Noel slowed to 7.82/192 while Powers got the victory at 7.22/212.97. He also won the UDRA race at Saginaw, Michigan, on August 11. There Dave made runs of 7.11, 7.13, and 7.14 to win. AKA Wynn's Winner. The "172" number in a circle was not the competition number. -- RH
