Notes: Also 7.49/208.37 at Bakersfield March Meet 3/66 and 7.59/209.30 at Lions 2/01/66 and 7.68 Irwindale Dragway AHRA Winternationals. | The B&M TorkMaster was NOT a two-speed transmission. It was just a fluid coupling to replace a clutch. - Norman Hechtkoff | After driving Roland Leong's "Hawaiian" with great success in '65, Prudhomme decided to go it alone for '66. He started by purchasing the "B&M TorkMaster" car and then turning to Dave Zeuschel for the engine. The chassis was a 155" Race Car Engineering product. The bodywork was done by Bob Sorrell. Dave started with a 392 Hemi. It was stock sized, but used a C&T crank. He ran M/T rods and 7:1 pistons, and Engle supplied the cam. The 2" valves for both intake and exhaust came from Donovan. The Don Hampton reworked GMC 6/71 blower sat on a Cragar manifold and Cragar was also the choice for the blower drive. Up top sat an Enderle fuel injection unit. According to the July '66 issue of Drag Racing USA, the "Snake" had run a best of 7.36/214.76 up to that point. | Don started the '66 season at Carlsbad on Jan 9 for a Jackpot Pro-Circuit race. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 7.71/210.28, but he lost to Bill Leavitt in the first round. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #9 in the 32-car show with a 7.68. An improved 7.59/210.28 beat Tom McEwen's 7.69 in the first round, but in round two, the "Snake's" 7.62 lost to Jim Dunn's 7.53. Everyone was at Lions the following week (February 26) for the UDRA Winternationals. Don qualified well, running a 7.59/209.30 for the #4 spot in the 32-car field, but he lost before the finals. Prudhomme didn't do too well on March 5 at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. On Saturday his 7.77/178.21 lost to Tommy Allen's 7.55/204 in the first round. Only six cars showed up to run at Half Moon Bay on March 20 and Don was one of them. He qualified #1 with a 7.78/211.82 (Top Speed) and in round one, his 7.66/211.76 beat Roy Thode's 7.79/185 in Ted Gotelli's car. In the semifinals, he ran 7.87/159.01 on the "odd-lot" solo. He was to face Don Garlits in the final, but Garlits had blown his engine in his semifinal win over John Edmunds so Edmunds was reinstated for the final. Unfortunately for Don, he set Low ET of the meet with a 7.59/208.80 in the final, but it was accompanied by a red light and John won with an 8.10/156. Prudhomme did get to race Garlits on April 10 at Cecil County for a best two out of three match race. The "Snake" took the match two straight when Garlits fouled in the first race and was just outrun in the second. |
