Notes: World Champ 1966. Low qualifier at the 1966 AHRA Winter Nationals at Irwindale with a 7.58. Ran 7.63/197.80 at Bakersfield March Meet 3/66. Ran 7.58 at Irwindale Dragway AHRA Winternationals. At the NHRA Winternationals, Pete just got into the field (#32) with 7.92, and he lasted until round three, where he was leading against Mike Snively until he lost a blower belt, and Mike squeezed past for the win. Pete was at Bakersfield for the March Meet on Saturday, March 5, when all 64 cars ran. In the first round, he beat Jim Nicoll with a 7.67/181.80. In round two, a 7.63/193.12 beat Tom McEwen's 7.89. But in the third round, the big SOHC Ford failed to fire. On March 13, Pete won a race at Arlington, setting Low ET and Top Speed at 7.43/192.00. Later in March, Pete ran a best-of-three match race against Don Garlits at Island Dragway. Garlits won the first race when Pete got crossed up, but Don fouled in the second race while Pete ran a 7.8, and in the final race, the Ford's 8.00/193 just plain beat Garlits for the match race win. Another win came on May 22 at Island Dragway for the Division 1 opener. A 7.71 (Low ET) qualified #1 and a 7.81/182 won in the final when Red Lang lost fire. He faced Don Prudhomme for a best-of-three match at Capitol on June 4. Prudhomme fouled in the first race, and Pete shut off to an 8.52/134 for the win. In the second race, the "Snake's" 7.50/207 beat Robinson's 7.77/193.96, and in the last race, Pete fouled away a 7.75/198.66, giving Prudhomme the match race victory. Later in June, he faced Ed McCulloch for another best-of-three match at Woodburn. Ed lost a blower belt in the first race, but he came back to win the second when Pete fouled and shut off to 9.13. The deciding race went to Pete, who turned a 7.49/206.88 to win the match over McCulloch's 7.98/158. On August 21, at the NASCAR Nationals at Dragway 42, Pete showed up running a pair of aluminum heads on his SOHC. He qualified #2 with a 7.52 and went on to run 7.48 twice, good for Low ET and a track record. Unfortunately, in the final, his motor let go, and he had to settle for runner-up. - Ron Howard |
