Notes: Suba, 30, died in a crash in a one-time ride at Rockford Dragway, Byron, Ill., on Oct. 13, 1968. This Carnett & Rowe fueler was normally driven by Dick Carnett. Reports say the car was drifting left throughout the run; Suba struck a barrel in the lights and flipped, demolishing the car. His father subsequently sued Rockford Dragway for having insufficient guardrails, among other claims. Suba had become the quickest man on earth the previous year (1967), turning a 5.41 in the Reaction Dynamics X-1 Blue Flame rocket car. His quarter-mile record stood for four years. -- RT |
