He ran 8.05 at Irwindale Dragway AHRA Winternationals. At the UDRA Winternationals at Lions on February 26, he used a 7.77/197.80 to qualify #20. He failed to make the finals. The following week (March 5), he was at Bakersfield. On Saturday, a 7.49/201.78 defeated Dave Cerny. In round two, Roy's 7.51/193.12 beat Bill Alexander. Sixty-four cars were competing on Saturday, and in round three, he dropped John Edmunds with a 7.75/194.80. He shut off against Larry Faust in round four. It was a strong showing that only got better on Sunday, with 32 cars running to see who would race the winner from Saturday for the overall title. Roy dusted off one of the best in the opening round, where his 7.69/196.06 beat Don Garlits' 8.13/190. In round two, he ran another 7.69 at 193.54 to defeat Dusty Rhoades. In round three, he faced another tough driver, where his 7.91/175.43 beat Dave Beebe's shut-off run. Rick Stewart's 8.09/193 fell to his 7.93/196.50 in the semifinal. He faced James Warren in the final to determine who would race Saturday's winner. Roy was a tad late off the line, and his 8.00/193.12 lost to Warren's 8.02/193. Only six cars showed up at Half Moon Bay on March 20. His 8.05 qualified #4 and set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Don Prudhomme. In their race, Thode's 7.79/185.18 lost to the "Snake's" 7.66/211. Roy qualified #1 with a 7.33 (Low ET) at 201.78 at an eight-car show at Lions on April 9.
