Notes: Hot on the heels of Jack Chrisman building the "Chrisman's Comet," several racers built cars to challenge the big Mercury. Steve Bovan's "Blair's Chevy II" was one of the first to hit the track. Bovan had raced a Mopar AA/Modified Production car but went with the lightweight Chevy II for the funny car. Bovan gutted the factory-built car to develop this "Match Bash" monster. Chevrolet's new big block 396 engine powered the machine. Steve sold the Chevy to Ed Carter from NorCal in 1967. Carter dubbed it the Chevy II Much and ran mostly at Fremont. The car's performance didn't change much. These times are on blown fuel. This car was sold to Ed Carter and Bob Little in 1967, who ran it in 67 and 68, first as the "Chevy II Heavy" and then as the "Color Kart." Bovan built the engine to run on 100% alcohol. Steve ran many match races with the car and ran CC/FD in NHRA competition. The Chevy used to lay down a smoke bank on a run. Bovan ran the "Blair's Speed Shop 396" in '65 and '66 with a 9.29/160 best. (Photo courtesy Bob Plumer and Drag Racing Memories. Stats courtesy Dennis Doubleday. Steve won the match, turning a best time of 9.44/152.54 compared to Grove's 9.96/145. Bovan faced Charlie Allen in a best of three at Irwindale on April 30. He lost the match two straight with times of 9.74/149.50 and 10.15/102.15, while Allen's best was 9.56/145. On May 14, he was back at Irwindale for a best of three match against Dave Souza. The wedge-powered Mustang was tough, but on this day, Bovan was tougher. Bovan's Nova ran 9.86/145.86 to win the first race, while in the second race, his 10.29/143.31 lost to the Mustang's 10.33/141. The Mustang broke and could not run the third race, so Bovan soloed for the victory with a 9.93/142.18. Allen and Steve had a rematch at Ramona on May 22. This time it was to be a best of five match. Bovan was quicker in the first two races with times of 9.60/143.31 and 9.67/142.40, but Allen was sharper on the lights as his 9.82/143 and 9.70/142 won both races. Steve came back to win the third race with a 9.61/144 when Allen fouled, but in the final race, the Nova went into a wheelstand, and Steve shut it down, giving Allen the match. Bovan was at Irwindale on November 12 for its FC Spectacular. He warmed up with a 9.07/157.61. The race was run with all ten cars making two runs and the two lowest ET cars meeting in the final. In his first race, he ran another 9.07 at 159.01, which narrowly lost to Gas Ronda's 9.06/151. In his second race, Steve's 9.12/158.45 was nowhere near Ed Schartman's 8.50/173 Comet. His times did not advance him into the final. Ran 9.55/152 per January 1966 Car Craft. Steve ran 9.11/157 at Irwindale CA 1966 per 11/18/66 Drag News.
