Notes: Doug was at Lions on August 17 with the new Javelin. He made an 8.23/184.80 check-out pass. Powered by a 390 punched out to 439 inches. January 1969, Drag Strip magazine said, "The car did not match the 7.60s of Doug's Corvair, but runs 8.10s at 188." The car was 1665 lbs. soaking wet. B&M Tork Master auto trans. Ran a confirmed 8.19 at Lions. | Saw a picture in a late-'82 HRM pictorial that two of the names in front of the front wheel were Gary Slusser and Jim Dunn. - Joe Moore. The Javelin-1, sponsored by Doug Thorley Headers, was built by Woody Gilmore’s Race Car Engineering primarily to address Doug’s growing concern about blower explosions and fires, which were becoming more commonplace in 1968. As a result, Gilmore put the engine behind the driver. With its one-piece body removed from the chassis, Javelin-1 looked like an overgrown go-kart.
