Notes: Mike was at Ontario Motor Speedway for its New Year's Day race. It was an eight-car field, and in the first round, he fouled at 7.54/195 against eventual winner Tripp Shumake. He qualified #6 at Tucson for the sixteen-car field for the AHRA Winternationals. He beat Steve Harris in the opening round, and a 6.81 in round two defeated Dick Custy. In the semifinals, Tom Hoover smoked the tires against him, and Mike advanced with a 6.82. He faced Shirl Greer in the final, and Mike's 6.84/207.85 got the victory over Shirl's 8.00. The following weekend (January 25), he went to Beeline Dragway for the Phoenix Winter Classic. It was another sixteen-car show, and he qualified #12. But he had issues and could not show for his first-round race against Gordie Bonin. In May, he was at Atco Dragway for a Coca-Cola Cavalcade race. His 7.03/193 in the first round beat Dick Bourgeois, but only the four quickest runs moved into the semifinals, and his time was not quick enough to advance. Mike did not run any NHRA national events this year. |
