Notes: Collett qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 7.92/190.66 just made the show. In the opening round, he improved to 7.87/191.08 to defeat Gary Cochran. Rico Paris fouled against him in round two, and Gordon made an easy 11.02/85.87 run to advance. Norm Wilcox lost fire in the semifinal, and Collett soloed at 12.96/69.66. He faced Jack Jones in the final. Jones had been running steady 7.7's, but he fell off to an 8.04/193 in the final that lost to Collett's 7.88/187.10. Gordon Won Top Gas Eliminator at the NHRA Winternationals in 1966, 1967, and 1968. |
