Notes: Grimes was seriously injured in October when his dragster crashed during an NHRA meet at Bristol Dragway. He was reportedly "bed-ridden for many months and on the sandpaper side of existence" when the May 6, 1966 Atlanta (GA) Journal announced an upcoming "Hoyt Grimes Day" fundraiser at the Atlanta Speed Shop Dragway in May of the following year. Grimes had been a gas dragster driver since 1959, but multiple reports of the accident -- not merely the same wirestory -- indicate he was competing in Top Fuel Eliminator at the time of his crash. It is unclear what fuel class he was competing in at the time of the accident. He turned a measured 168.22 mph against Ray Mullins immediately before losing control. -- RT |
