Notes: Rickie was the strongest running Ford on the IHRA Circuit, and for '85, he wanted to try to make it into more NHRA shows. In January, he went to Firebird Raceway and tested his car during the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. Rickie's best was 7.78/178. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he just made the field, running 7.77/179.64 for the "bump spot." He did OK in the first round, where he stepped up to a quick-leaving 7.71/178.64, beating Ronnie Manchester's quicker 7.69/179. In the second round, his 7.75/176.26 lost to Warren Johnson's 7.69/179. He qualified #11 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 7.74/180.36, but in the first round, he shut down early to 8.92/112.78 and lost to Butch Leal's 7.63/178. Smith was one of four Fords to qualify at the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta. 32 cars attempted to make the field, and Rickie's 7.82/177.86 qualified #10. He shaved the light too close and fouled in the first round, slowing to 8.04 in a loss to Leal's 7.74. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, his 7.76/180.36 was good for the first alternate. He also failed to make the show at the NHRA Springnationals, where his 7.82/177.16 was the sixth alternate, and in Canada for the Grandnationals, where he was the first alternate with a best of 7.72/179.64. Things went better at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where he qualified #15 with a 7.74, but he went out early in eliminations. From there, he went to Maryland International for the Pro Stock Open event, where he finished runner-up to Roy Hill. He skipped the NHRA Mile High Nationals in Denver and the NHRA Northstar Nationals, but he was at Indy for the US Nationals. A best of 7.81/178.92 failed to make the 7.76 "bump." Rickie did not attend the next two NHRA events (Keystone Nats and Fall Nats), but he was back at Pomona for the World Finals, where his 7.83/176.95 was good for the fifth alternate. |
