Notes: Smith debuted his new Monza at the NHRA Gatornationals. On his first qualifying attempt, he ran 6.70. Paul improved to 6.422/208.33 to qualify #2 behind Don Prudhomme's 6.39/205. He lost a close one in the opening round, where his 6.525/206.42 lost to Billy Meyer's 6.51/200. Paul was at Warner Robins in April for the NHRA Division 2 Opener. He qualified #2 behind Shirl Greer, and these two made their way into the final. The two had a great race, with Greer running 6.40/219 to win over Smith's hard-charging 6.41/229.00 (Top Speed). Not long after this, he was at Englishtown for its Spring Funny Car Championships. It was an eight-car show, and in the opening round, Smith smoked the tires and lost to eventual winner Pee Wee Wallace. Smith came back out later for a consolation race against Dodger Glenn, driving the "Frantic Ford." Paul ran 6.93/193.96 to beat Glenn's 7.57/188. Paul qualified #15 at Columbus at 6.623/199.11. In round one, he lost to teammate and Division 2 nemesis Greer, 6.469/205.94 to 7.349/118.57. Paul got into the top half of the field at NHRA Englishtown with a 6.450/209.79 that qualified #8. He beat a broken Ron Jackson in round one (12-second shutoff) but crossed the centerline against eventual winner Jim Liberman in round two. The team qualified #7 at NHRA Sanair with a 6/63/218.97, but Paul lost a close one to Bob Pickett in the first round, 6.51/207.37 to 6.61 216.86. The team qualified well at Indy, claiming the #6 spot at 6.292/226.13. Paul lost another close one in round one, however, this time to Dale Pulde, 6.340/211.26 to 6.401/210.28. The team's next and final NHRA national event was the World Finals, where Paul was the fourth alternate at 6.439/217.90. Photo from the 1975 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida.
