Notes: AKA Chicken Chokers. Speelman was at Cayuga Dragway in mid-May for the NHRA Division 1 race. His 6.73/204.08 qualified #5, and in the first round, his 6.91/189.47 fell to eventual winner Charlie Bauer's 6.62/207. In June, John attended the Maryland International event for the fourth NHRA Division 1 race. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.47/209.30 qualified #5. He beat low qualifier Bill Barney in the opening round with a 6.48/207.37 to Barney's 6.55/156. A semifinal 6.55/200.00 defeated Jeff Rapp's 6.90/181. He faced Bill Walsh in the final. Speelman caught a good light, and his 6.48/208.33 beat Walsh's better 6.44/211. The next NHRA Division 1 race was held at Maple Grove on June 21. John's 6.48/202.70 qualified #1, but he fouled against Bauer in the first round. In the first week of July, he made a trip to Suffolk for the NHRA Division 2 race. His 6.60/203.16 qualified #3, and a 6.69/179.28 advanced in round one when George O'Cook fouled. In the semifinal, he had a good race that saw his 6.65/205.94 lose to John Rose's 6.63/206. John qualified #7 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with a 6.47/207.37. He improved to 6.42/209.64 in the first round to beat Rose's 6.71/203. In round two, he slowed to 6.56/185.49 and lost to Barney's 6.32/215. The final NHRA Division 1 race was held in New England on August 2. John's 6.42/187.50 qualified second to Bauer's 6.39/213. Speelman defeated Ron Still in round one with a 6.41/188.28, and in the semifinal, he set Low ET with a 6.36/210.28 that took out Celko's 6.47/210. He and Bauer were to run the final, but Speelman's car broke. Bauer ran 6.38/206 for the victory. Number two qualifier at Indy with a 6.301/218.23, but a 6.53/214.79 in the opening round, lost to Jay Meyer's 6.41/212. He snagged a big win at the NHRA Keystone Nationals. A 6.34/211.66 qualified second to Dale Hall's similar 6.34/209. These two would meet in the final. Speelman's car kept getting quicker in eliminations. A 6.31/213.92 beat alternate Richard Bozzelli's 6.45/214. He and Walsh had a close race in the semifinal, with John's 6.30/217.91 getting the win over Walsh's 6.31/213. He then set Low ET in the final with a 6.24/213.57 that won over Hall's 6.28/212 runner-up effort. |
