Notes: Defeated Don Garlits in round one of the Irwindale Grand Premiere in January at age 17. His 6.45 beat "Big Daddy's " 6.54. He then defeated Danny Ongais in round two before losing on a holeshot to Don Moody's 6.60 with a 6.58 in the semifinals. He went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, which took forever to run because of rain delays. Traction was horrible on the damp racing surface (low qualifier was in at 6.75), and Stewart qualified #31 in the 32-car show with a 7.33/177.61. He lost to Norm Wilcox in the first round. Came back and won a big Sacramento fuel meet in February over Jim Herbert (who had defeated Garlits). He qualified #1 with a 6.47 and a final round 6.51/196.50, which won him the event. Stewart also won the NHRA Division 5 race at Thunder Valley. He didn't have to run hard in the final as Gary Beck had won his semifinal race, but had a frame rail break and was unable to show. Stewart was at OCIR for the PDA Championships in July. He qualified #2 in the 32-car field with a 6.35. In the opening round, he beat Wayne King with a time of 6.37/202.24, and in round two, he improved to 6.33/203.16 over Rick Ramsey. John made an easy pass in the third round when Gary Ritter fouled, but, in the semifinals, he fouled against eventual winner James Warren. He was back at Sacramento on July 29 for the NHRA Division 7 race. Once again, he made it into the semifinals. A first-round 6.47/217 beat Ron Attebury, and in the second round, his 6.34 beat Dwight Hughes' 6.46. Once more, Warren was the one who put Stewart on the trailer. James pushed it so hard in winning over Stewart that he blew the crank out of it, and he was unable to run the final. | We ran our car in 1973 (in addition to the California Chargers machine — BP). We ran a lot of 6.03 to 6.20 at 225 to 230. I crashed at Sacramento in the finals, racing Big Daddy. — John Stewart | Also 6.27 at Phoenix.
