Notes: Ongais was at Irwindale on January 8 for an eight-car show. He qualified #3 at 7.38/205.94. In the opening round of competition, his 7.43/207.36 beat Tommy Allen but another 7.43 at 211.26 lost to Bob Muravez's 7.44/200. At the AHRA Winternationals, over 100 cars attempted to qualify for the 32 car field. Ongais' 7.75 qualified #7. He was late off the line in the first round, and his 7.63/202.70 lost to "Sneaky Pete" Robinson's 7.81/181. Shortly after that, he went back to Irwindale for another eight-car show. Unfortunately, the car broke in the first round, against Jeep Hampshire. Then Danny went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A 7.34/207.84 qualified #6 in the 32 car field, and in round one, his 7.42/197.36 defeated Jimmy Nix's 7.52/205. He ran his best time of the weekend, a 7.27 at 211.26 in beating Hank Clark's 7.41/209 in round two. Ongais got a "freebie" in the third round when Jim Bollinger shut off on the line, and Danny advanced with a 10.38/85.30. He and Gene Goleman had a really close race in the semifinals that saw both drivers run 7.29 (Ongais at 210.76), but Goleman got the win. A week later (February 12), he was back at Irwindale. His 7.12/214.78 qualified #1, but he fouled against Mie Snively, who was driving the "Hawaiian" in the first round. He did not compete at the Bakersfield March Meet that was at that time held on February 19. Instead, he chose to go to Las Vegas for the Stardust National Open held on the same weekend. It was a sixteen-car field, and in round one, he soloed as Don Cook failed to show. He lost to Mike Sorokin in the second round, who was driving the second of the two "Hawaiian" cars. On March 15, Carlsbad held an eight-car show that had 23 cars attempt to qualify. Danny qualified #6 with a big speed of 215.30. A 7.21/201.34 beat Muravez's 7.37 in the opening round. But the car broke on the run, and he could not return for the semifinal. Danny ran a best of 7.247/208.80 at NHRA Indy. | Tom "Surfer" Jobe retired from H.
