Notes: Rookie season as a fuel car. Les was runner-up to Jim Liberman at Maple Grove in June for the NHRA Division 1 race. He went to Suffolk on July 18 for its twice-rained-out NHRA Division 2 race. Unfortunately, he lost in the first round. In August, he was at Empire Dragway for its Gold Cup Championships. It was an eight-car show, and in the opening round, his 6.60/185.95 beat Roy Harris' 6.78/207 in the "Brutus" Mustang II. In the semifinal, a troubled 7.18/131.19 lost to Dodger Glenn's 6.57/194 in the "Frantic Ford." Les ran 6.32 at New England in September 1976 in a close round one loss to RC Sherman's 6.28. A 6.18/200.00 shut-off run at New England in October 1976 was the quickest Donovan AA/FC pass in history (even with steel heads). Reportedly never ran faster than 207.85, running quickly but shutting off to save parts. AKA Sundance Kid.

Notes: Donovan-powered FC's were few and far between by '78. The Cassidy brothers did their best to stay competitive. Cassidy started his season at Beeline for the Phoenix Winter Championships. He qualified #15, and in round one, his 7.33 lost to John Collins' 6.42. He then went to Green Valley Raceway's Funny Car opener. There was an opening-round 6.62 lost to Tom Prock's 6.27. The next stop for him was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car field, and the track wasn't great, so his 7.50/205 held up for the #5 spot in the show. He improved by almost a half-second to a 7.06/184 in the first round, but it wasn't good enough as the eventual winner Dale Pulde, beat him with a 6.49/224. Les took a big win over an eight-car field at Suffolk in April. His final-round opponent, Dodger Glenn, crossed the centerline in the final, giving Les the win. He ran a pro-stock like 9.07 at 91mph to qualify #14 at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Larry Fullerton failed to fire for his race against him in the opening round of eliminations, and Cassidy ran a solo 7.24/145 to advance. In round two, he slipped and slid to a 9.32/95 loss to Denny Savage's 6.49/216. On July 2, Les was at Empire Dragway in New York for the NED Gold Cup Championships. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.77/189.48 in the opening round lost to Tom Prock's 6.44/213. A couple of days later (July 5), he was at Englishtown for its Funny Car Spectacular race. Twelve cars were competing, and all were to run two rounds of racing, with the two lowest ET cars meeting in the final. In his first race, Les's 6.69/173.09 lost to Tom McEwen's 6.17/218. In the second race, he beat Jim Adolph with a 6.63. His ET was not good enough to advance into the final. On July 22, Cassidy went to Maple Grove for the fourth NHRA Division 1 race. He didn't stick around long as his crossed-up 7.59/131.19 lost to Bruce Larson's 6.70/208 in the opening round. $600 junk Monza body on venerable S&W chassis. AKA Sundance Kid.

Notes: Les was at Englishtown for its FC opener in late March. In the opening round, his 6.83/201.34 lost to eventual winner Gary Burgin's 6.31/231. Shortly after that (April 1st), he was at DeSoto for the NHRA Division 2 opener. Only five cars showed, and in round one, his 6.72/206.42 beat R.C.Sherman. He got the "odd-lot" solo in the semifinals and puttered to a 12.48 to advance. He was to face Shirl Greer in the final, but his Corvette lost fire, and he had to watch as Greer soloed for the win. He was at Englishtown for the Crazy Eddie Night of Thrills race. All ten cars were to make two runs, with the two Low ET cars advancing into the final. In his first race, his 6.71/199.55 lost to Pete Williams' 6.60/218 in the "Chi-Town Hustler" and in the second race, a 6.88/198.23 fell to Jake Crimmins' 6.59/207. He was at Richmond Dragway for the fourth NHRA Division 2 race, but after qualifying, he could not make his first-round race against Junior Rice. Division 2 NHRA Funny Car champ in 1979. Rebodied same old S&W 118" wheelbase chassis.

Notes: Phil, while filling in for regular driver Tom Prock, was the low qualifier at the 1972 NHRA Summernationals with a 6.508/222.77. He lost to Ron Potter (Golden Nugget Mustang) in the first round, after he lost the coin flip for lane choice and was forced to take the bad lane. Went 6.550/221.13 at Indy 9/72. Suffered complete body destruction after blower explosion on a winning 6.60/187.11 first-round pass at Indy 9/72. Came back and ran 6.88 to qualify #5 at the World Finals, but lost round one to Gordie Bonin. | Per Dennis Doubleday, Prock drove mostly booked-in match races, while Phil Castronovo drove the national events and maybe WCS races. Prock destroyed the “Mini-Challenger” at ATCO, and it was replaced with the pictured “Custom Body” Challenger. As stated, Castronovo suffered an explosion and crash at the US Nationals with that car. After that, the new 1973 Challenger, which was already under construction, debuted early, same driver arrangement. JM
