Notes: Phil was at Miami-Hollywood in March for its Winter Championships. An 8.24/166.35 advanced in round one, while in the second round, he set both ends of the track record with a 6.97/211.26 over Mike Burkhart who broke. In the semifinals, he got the "odd-lot" solo and ran 7.03/194.80. He faced Curtis Wasson's Chevy-powered Camaro in the final. Wasson's best in eliminations had been 7.59, but in the final, the Charger broke and slowed to 9.78/73.95 while Curtis got the victory with an 8.77/186. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. At the NHRA Gatornationals, the car was extensively damaged when the throttle stuck and Phil intentionally drove the car into the guardrail. He qualified #7 with a 7.05 and ran a best of 6.93 in eliminations before the crash in the semifinals. With the repaired and repainted car, he went to Maple Grove in May for an eight-car show. A 7.28/193.54 beat Pete Hill's 7.80/195 in the first round, but he broke against Bob Cain in the semifinals. He made the finals at the inaugural NHRA Grandnationals. During that final race against Sam Miller, Phil had a two-car length lead when he lost traction and skidded on the grease-sweep that was still in his lane after the cleanup of a Ray Motes blown engine during the Top Gas final. After losing the race in the manner that he did Phil was understandably upset at NHRA for what he thought was an insufficient effort in cleaning the track. He said "Another ten minutes of sweeping would have made all the difference. I don't plan to run any more NHRA events ever - I could have killed myself." That off the cuff remark cost him entry into the years biggest race, the NHRA Nationals at IRP over Labor Day weekend. The NHRA pulled out and rejected his previously approved entry for Indy. Cooler heads prevailed later in the year, and he was allowed to enter the NHRA World Finals in Amarillo. In that race, he used consistent low to mid-7-second ETs and opponents' breakage to become the NHRA World Champion. His 7.15 at 210.28 was good enough in the final to beat a broken Jake Johnson. Ironic that the man that said he would never run another NHRA event became world champion. And the association that denied him entry into their biggest race now had to honor him. Phil ran the Charger until November when a new Woody Gilmore built Challenger made its debut. |

Notes: Won OCIR match race in 1977. Note comp number 100. According to WDIFL, Phil used BOTH #100 and #115 during his driving career. | Phil opened the year at the PRO event at Beeline on 1/14/77. He ran 6.91/166.35 there. He qualified #14 at the Winternationals at 6.411/224.43 and lost round one to Gary Burgin despite an improved 6.355/223.88. Phil qualified #7 at Gainesville with a 6.42/227.27, but Al Bergler surprised him with a holeshot in round one, 6.63/210.28 to 6.57/227.27. Phil was at Maple Grove in March for its All-Pro series race. He didn't reach the finals, but he did run a strong 6.42. Another 6.42 did not make the cut at Columbus, leaving Phil as fourth alternate. By Englishtown, Al Segrini had taken over the seat of Phil’s Custom Body entry. |

Notes: Vic was at Dragway 42 in May for the AHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.62/209.79. Unfortunately, a tire-smoking 7.97 in the first round lost to Norm Wilcox's 7.08 in the "Hawaiian." At St. Louis for the AHRA Springnationals, a 6.80/196.51 qualified #7 in the eight-car field. He lost to eventual winner Dick Custy in the first round. Shortly after that, he was at Tri-City for an eight-car show. All cars were to make three passes. Vic ran 6.96/197.80 to beat Wilcox's 7.97 in his first race. In the second race, his 6.83/200.00 lost to Tom Hoover's 6.72/191. In his final appearance, he got a solo run, running 7.02/196.93. In August, Vic was at Englishtown for an eight-car show. In the first round, he set Top Speed with a 6.53/222.77 that beat Denny Savage's out-of-shape 8.83 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." In the semifinals, he improved to a 6.50 at 220.04 to beat Al Segrini's 6.80/211. Unfortunately, he suffered engine damage on the run and could not return for the final. Runner-up to PHR Championships race at US 131 to Don Prudhomme. Cecelia ran 6.60, 6.51, and 6.44. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1976. |

Notes: Photo from 1993 NHRA Springnationals, Columbus, Ohio. Gary was in Atlanta in April for the NHRA Southern Nationals. His 5.40/270.02 qualified #13; in round one, he picked up to 5.25/275.65, but it came at a loss as Al Hofmann beat him with a 5.24/268. He skipped the NHRA Mid-South Nationals at Memphis but was back on the NHRA tour for the Mopar Nationals at Englishtown. There he qualified #8 with a 5.21/281.42. He beat a troubled Dean Skuza in round one with a 5.79/197.36. He lost to eventual winner John Force in round two. Best times of 5.214/284.53 at Englishtown and Indy, respectively. |

Notes: Chadderton made his driving debut in Roland Leong's "Hawaiian" on January 23 at the second OCIR All-Pro race. He ran well, beating Ron O'Donnell in the opening round with a 6.61/215, but he had trouble in the semifinals and slowed to 14.88 in a loss to eventual winner Gene Snow's 7.03. The team then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A 7.08 qualified #13 and he lost to Tom McEwen in the first round. The following week, they were back at OCIR for the third All-Pro event. Chadderton qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 6.80, but a tire-shaking 8.10 in the opening round lost to Ray Alley's 6.90. The Bakersfield March Meet saw Leroy get revenge on Alley by beating him in the first round with a 7.16. Unfortunately, he lost to eventual winner Ed McCulloch in round two. A week later (March 11), OCIR held a Funny Car meet, and the "Hawaiian" was there. But Chadderton lost to the "Midnight Skulker" in the first round. Leroy won the last race in the 1972 OCIR All-Pro Championship Series, beating Gary Burgin in the final. He set the OCIR track record at that event with a 6.56. He faced Jerry Ruth in a best of three match race at Deer Park in April and it wasn't a very good showing for the "Hawaiian" team as Leroy blazed the tires on every run and lost three straight. In August at US 131 Dragway he won the 1972 Popular Hot Rodding Championships beating Don Prudhomme early Sunday morning (8:30 am) after heavy fog forced a postponement of Saturday's final round. |
