Notes: Nickname: "The Professor." Added Blower, Sponsor. Early in June, Chadwick was one of four cars running in a match race at LaPlace. He ran a personal best (to this point) of 7.89 to beat a fouling Leonard Hughes at 8.06. In his second race, he shut down early to an 8.78 that lost to Tom Smallwood's 8.13 in the "Kingfish." The third race saw Chadwick doing battle with Della Woods' new Charger. The Camaro took the win with an 8.30/181.80. Kelly was at Amarillo on June 23 for a best-of-three-match race against Gene Snow. He was having transmission problems and lost two straight. Snow's transmission gave out in the third race, and Chadwick won with an 8.36/189.46. The following week (June 28), he was at Detroit for the Midwest Super Stock Funny Car Championships. A 7.98/182.92 advanced past the first-round when Don Schumacher lost fire, and in round two, an 8.04/169.81 beat Hank Garcia's 8.44/159 in the "Car Shop" Camaro. In the semifinals, he fouled against eventual winner Fred Goeske. On July 4, he was in Oklahoma City for an eight-car show. His 8.01/183.28 beat the "Site Brothers" 'Cuda in the opening round of eliminations. In the semifinals, his 7.93/191.80 beat Leonard Hughes' 8.08/190. It was an all-Chevy final as he faced Mike Burkhart's similar Camaro in the final. Chadwick got the victory, running Low ET with his 7.81/191.14 getting the best of Mike's 7.98/190. He raced Paul Stefansky in a best of three match at Houston in July. Kelly won all three races when Paul's car developed transmission problems. Chadwick's times were 8.13/185.18 in the first and only race, and he ran two solo passes of 8.45/181.80 and 8.44/185 to sew up the match. Hr ran a confirmed 7.79 at Detroit and 7.93/188.28 at Bristol 9/20/68. His '68 record had him race 68 times, and he won approximately 75% of his races. |

Notes: Nickname: "The Professor." Chadwick is well-known in two different fields. In Texas, as a girls’ basketball coach and nationwide as a premier drag racer. Don Hardy built all of Kelly Chadwick's cars, including the pictured Camaro. The beautiful 1969 Camaro was his third funny car and his first with a flip top and tube chassis. Chadwick had raced the "Wild Thing" Chevy II and the "Wild Thing II" Camaro, mainly in the Southwest. The Camaro was the first car he took on a national tour. Chadwick joined the original Coca-Cola Cavalcade of Stars and was said to be the champion in 1969. (Photo provided by Drag Racing Memories. Info provided by James Ibusuki) - BS | Did he run 7.22/209 in 69/70? | Kelly Chadwick had Don Hardy built him a new Camaro for '69. The car used a 427 Chevy. Mondello did the heads, and Don Hardy prepared the blower. A Hilborn four-port injector unit fed the 60% nitro mixture. Howards supplied the cam. A TorqueFlite transmission transferred the power back to a Pontiac rear with 3.90 gears. | Chadwick started the season by qualifying eleventh with an 8.298/187.89 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Clare Sanders' 8.09 beat his 8.53/161.57 in the first round. On April 27 at Amarillo, Texas, he won the Coca-Cola Cavalcade race beating Fred Goeske in the final with track records of 7.82/192.70. Kelly beat Jack Chrisman with an 8.18 in the first round, and he the semifinal, he fouled against Norm Weekly, but Mr. Norm's Charger had engine trouble and couldn't repair for the final, so Chadwick was reinstated. In May, he was at Capitol for the "Mr. Chevrolet" Invitational. He beat Dick Harrell in the first round, with a 7.68/193.96, but in the second round, the Camaro got sideways while racing Malcolm Durham, and he shut down to an 8.96/179.64 loss. Epping held a Cavalcade race on June 15. Kelly lost his first race to Gary Dyer's 7.76/186. He did win his second race with a 7.71/188.28 over a fouling Jess Tyree (7.90/177). In the final, Dyer ran a track-record 7.55 over Kelly's 7.97/164.50 runner-up effort. Later in June, he did win at the Maple Grove Cavalcade race, where he beat Dyer in the final for the win. On July 3, Chadwick picked up another Coca-Cola Cavalcade win at US 30, Gary, Indiana. It was his third Cavalcade win in a row. He beat Ken Safford in the "Stone, Woods and Cook" Mustang in the first round, with a 7.68/196, and in the second round, he beat Jess Tyree's Firebird with a 7.71/199. In the final, he beat Marv Eldridge's 7.98/188 with a 7.66/200. Another Coca-Cola Cavalcade race was run at National Trail on August 17, where Chadwick broke a driveshaft in his first race and watched Dick Bourgeois single to an 8.17 win. In his second race, against Marv Eldridge, he won with a 7.79 when Marv broke. In his third race, an 8.78 beat Chrisman's ailing Mustang at 9.40. Dyer won the race in the Mr. Norm car. At Indy for the US Nationals, a 7.543/195.22 qualified Chadwick sixteenth. But in the first round, he stepped it up to a 7.383/196.93 to beat Bobby Wood’s 7.55/199. In round two, Danny Ongais' 7.38 put him on the trailer. On September 20 at Dallas International, he competed in an eight-car show. A first-round 7.52 beat Fritz Callier's 7.69. But a 7.29/204 from Gene Snow in the semifinal dropped his 7.48/194.38. Another win came his way on October 18 at Lions for its Cavalcade race. He ran a 7.53/177.86 over Tyree in the first round, and a second-round 7.47/190.67 beat Eldridge's 7.76/181. In the final, Bob Smith in the Invader fouled away a Low ET of the meet 7.26/193.13, letting Chadwick cruise to an 8.06/138.46 win. At the Lions fifth annual East/West Championships on October 25, he lost to Jim Liberman's 8.06/175 in the first round, with an ailing 10.00. He competed at the Sears Point North/South Championships on November 2 but lost to Lew Arrington's 7.89/194 before the finals. He managed to qualify third for the GM team with a 7.71 for the OCIR Manufacturer's meet on November 7. The following day, a much better 7.47/196.06 beat Rusty Delling's 7.63/191 in his first race. A series of wheelstands did in any chance of winning against Larry Reyes' 7.40/202 in his second race. And a 7.85 in his third race beat a quicker Tony Weathers' 7.75. A Coke circuit ad cited best times of 7.51/195.83 at the time. - Ron Howard |

Notes: Chrysler dominated the Funny Car ranks in '71, and the Chevy campaigners were having a really tough time keeping up. Chadwick was loyal to the Chevrolet cause and refused to switch to a Hemi. His performance was hurting for most of the season, but he turned the quickest time for Chevy-powered cars near the end of the year. The Camaro was built at Don Hardy's shop, and it had a 118" wheelbase. The body was a product of JE Fiberglass. Chadwick and his crew chief, Ray Sullins, put together the 427 Chevy engine. As much as he was a Chevy supporter, Chadwick did run a Mopar rear end with 4.56 gears. He attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals but failed to better the 7.30 "bump." Kelly was one of four Funny Cars running at the Amarillo Opener in March. On an early check-out pass, he warmed up with a 7.23. In his first race, he faced Gene Snow, but his 7.53/184.04 lost to Snow's 7.02/209. In his second race, he ran Richard Tharp driving the "Blue Max.” Once again, he lost. Another four-car race was run at Southland. In his first race, he faced Gene Snow, who was debuting his new Charger. Chadwick's 7.35/187.11 beat Snow's new car blues at 8.19/128. Unfortunately, the run cost Kelly a rear axle, and he was done for the day. Also, early in the year, Chadwick faced Art Ward driving the "Avenger" Challenger in a best of three match at Cornhusker. He had problems in the first race and shut off on the line, but he came back to win the next two races and the match with times of 7.36 and 7.46 with a best speed of 196.07. He was at Cecil County for the Maryland State Funny Car Championships in May. It was an eight-car show, and his 7.14/190 in the first round, beat Sam Miller's 7.29/207. Chadwick fouled against Bobby Rowe in the "Super Duster" in the semifinals. But Rowe burnt some pistons and could not run the final, so Chadwick got back into the show. He faced another Chevy-powered car in the final, Bruce Larson's. Kelly ran 7.31/177 for the victory when Larson blew a transmission. Chadwick was running really well at Oswego on August 8 for its Mr. Chevrolet race. He ran three 6.8's to win the event. He was at Bristol on August 29 for the IHRA All-American race, but he lost to Ed McCulloch in the first round. Kelly was Low ET qualifier with a 6.734 at OCIR's annual Manufacturer's Meet. He ran several more 6.70s during Saturday night eliminations, but parts breakage kept him from having a chance at making the finals. Notes: This car was destroyed in a top-end collision with Connie Kalitta's Bounty Hunter at Union Grove, Wis. This was Chadwick's last funny. He quickly transitioned into a Pro Stock Vega. - RT | Ran 6.64 at Dallas. Time had run out for the Chevy-powered Funny Car's by '73. Every once in a while, one might run a 6.7, but while they were doing that there were six Hemi powered cars running 6.40s. Chadwick was loyal to the end of his Funny Car career. This was his last funny car. Like all the others before, it was built by Don Hardy. The car featured a 118" wheelbase The Vega body came from J&E Fiberglass. The "Rat" motor now displaced almost 500 cubes thanks to a Delta Machine Crank and a .062 overbore. Venolia pistons sat on Howards rods and Howards also supplied the cam. A Cragar manifold held a 35% overdriven Larry Bowers blower. A Hilborn injection unit sat on top. A Lenco two-speed transmission fed the power to a Dana rear end. You couldn't help, but root for him as he was almost all alone in a Chrysler dominated class. |
