Notes: Blown direct-drive 427 Ford on fuel. AKA Super Cyclone. Ran 'low nines.' (We need exact ET). Though generally run as an exhibition car, closest class would've been S/FX (Supercharged Factory experimental). Considered by most to be the first true fuel funny car, this car began with an FE wedge motor on nitro, and was created as the huge publicity roll-out on the gas-burning Dodge Chargers team started. Former dragster standout Jack Chrisman agreed to drive, with the car built by Mercury subcontractor Bill Stroppe. Once complete, Jack would show up unannounced at the DC's publicized race demo dates, reportedly bankrolled directly by Mercury through Helen Sachs dealership in Downey, Ca. (and, no, Dodge was not happy about these appearances). The direct drive meant it smoked the tires most of its run just like a fuel dragster of this era did. Chrisman ran the car for two seasons, converting to red paint with fresh 1965 body panels, and replacing the wedge with SOHC power on fuel soon after the 1965 Winternationals. The motor was also set back at this time. In this format, the car was in the first-ever NHRA side-by-side blown nitro 'doorslammer' race when Jack raced Don Gay for B/Fuel Dragster honors at the 1965 Nationals. Sold to Dee Keaton, Jack 'the Bear' would bring the car back out briefly after the August 1966 fire in his Logghe roadster at New York National Speedway. Former Ford racer and collector Jim Barillaro found the remains of this car in the early 1980s and restored it. Therefore this, the first fuel funny car, is also indirectly responsible for inaugurating the restored funny car era, which in turn has birthed the modern nostalgia Funny Car movement. And Jim Barillaro will still occasionally cackle this car on nitro. | Jack showed up at Fremont on July 12/1964, and made a series of exhibition passes. He ran times of 10.70/144.69, 10.63/145.16, 10.44/147.54, and a final 10.38/148.27 to steal the show. Fans were amazed at this full size car running these times and speeds. |

Notes: Blown fuel. This was the car Jack ran for Sachs & Sons in 1964 with all updated sheet metal. (Started 1964 with Sachs & Sons on side). Roof was about the only thing that didn't change. July 1966 Car Craft says this car ran 'around 9.20's' in 1965. Confirmed 9.79. We need confirmation of best ET. Run by Dee Keaton in 1966, then bought back from him by Chrisman when Chrisman's 1966 Comet roadster burned to the ground. - DD, BP |

Notes: Chrisman started the year at Lions for the AHRA Funny Car meet on January 28. It didn't go too well. He qualified 31 with a 9.90/154.90 and lost a motor on the line in round one. He ran 8.40 to qualify 13th on February 24, again at Lions, and ran 8.09/180.00 to win his first-round race. An 8.11/176 failed to beat Fred Goeske in the second round. The following day at Carlsbad, he had injection problems and couldn't run, giving Dick Loehr a single. Chrisman was at Lions on March 30, where all fourteen cars made three runs. His 9.14/145.11 lost to Bob Pickett's 9.10/109 when both cars got out of shape in his first race. Motor trouble kept him from making a second run, and on the third, his ailing Comet lost to Johnny Wright's 8.41/160. After doing a stint with Hayden Proffitt's Rebel, Amos Satterlee came back as the chief mechanic. On April 7, Jack ran a best of 8.06/182.18 and finished runner-up to Fred Goeske at the Carlsbad Funny Car Championships. A first-round loss to Dick Harrell's 8.17 to Chrisman's 8.32 followed on May 4 at OCIR. An 8.02/151.50 qualified him second at Lions on May 18, but the pass cost him as a timing chain broke, and he bent some valves. As a result, he was unable to race. He was at Tulsa on June 9 for a best-of-three-match race against Don Gay. Jack lost the first race to the Pontiac, but he ran a strong 7.64 to win over Gay, who lost a motor in the second race. Gay could not return for the third race, so Jack soloed for the match race victory. At Irwindale on June 22, Jack lost to Dee Keaton in the second round. Jack was at Irwindale on August 17 for a Funny Car vs. Fuel Altered race. There were four of each that were to race round-robin. In his first race, he ran 8.13/179.28, but it wasn't strong enough to beat Gary Reed's 7.69/204 in the "Groundshaker."In the second race against Sush Matsubara, the Comet broke at 1/8 track and lost to Sush's 9.47/163. The car could not run the last race, and Willie Borsch filled in for him. A big win at Lions on October 12 followed with his 7.98/177.86 dropping Dale Pulde in the final. He almost pulled it off again on November 16 at Lions, where he qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 7.97/185.44. He then ran two 7.88's at 185.56 and 181.08 to beat Ronnie Runyon twice(Ronnie had gotten back into the show on the "break rule"). That got him into the final against Jim Liberman. Jack had to shut off on the line with a leaking transmission. He also raced at the OCIR Mfg. Championships 1968. It was his last season running a Comet. |

Notes: Coca-Cola Cavalcade of Stars racer. Jack Chrisman's new 118" Fletcher-built Mustang was a thing of beauty. The Shedlik built body was painted a light metallic red. The stock bore and stroke 427 SOHC used M/T rods supporting Ansen 6:1 pistons. Crane cams were used. A four-port Hilborn Injector sat on the Don Hampton-built blower. It sat on a stock Ford intake manifold for blower applications. The blower drive came from Delta. Doug's Headers were also used. The transmission was a B&M reworked C-6. A Detroit Locker rear with 3.50 gears put the power to the ground. | The car could win at car shows, but Jack had a rough year at the track. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Winternationals. On March 22, he again failed to make the field at Lions for an eight-car show. Twenty-two cars attempted to make the show. On April 20, Chrisman faced Fred Goeske at Gary, Indiana, for a best of three match. He had a bad day as he lost three straight. In their first race, Fred's 7.70/173 beat his 8.14/160. Both got quicker in the second race, where Fred's 7.63/193 got the better of Jack's 7.94/181. Both ran their best times in the last race, with Fred's 7.60/197 leading Chrisman's 7.87/188 through the traps. Amarillo, Texas, held a Coca-Cola Cavalcade race on April 27, but Jack failed to make the final round. Another Cavalcade race was held at Epping on June 15, and he lost all three of his races, running a best of only 8.96/139.50. In June, he was at Maple Grove for another Cavalcade race but again failed to make the final. On August 17, for National Trail's Cavalcade event, Jack won his first race with an 8.20 over Marv Eldridge's 8.26. He broke at half-track in the second race but won when Goeske fouled away a 7.97. He lost his third-round race to Kelly Chadwick's 8.78 with an ailing 9.40. On September 7 at Shelby International Raceway for the Memphis Funny Car 500, Chrisman won his first-round race when Roger Lindamood broke. But Lindamood got in with the break rule in effect and was matched against Chrisman again in the second round. This time Roger set a 7.44 track record in beating Jack. The highlight of his season had to be at Indy, where Jack qualified #13 for the US Nationals with a 7.520 and had a Top Speed at 206.42. A first-round 7.663/200 beat Dick Loehr's quicker 7.56/193, but in the second round, his 7.72/196 wasn't enough to beat Leonard Hughes's 7.25/201. On October 18, a Cavalcade race was held at Lions, but in the first round, he ran a blower-popping 8.13/177.51 that lost to Marv Eldridge's 7.84/180. | The Coke circuit ad from 1969 listed Jack's best times at 7.57/193.91. |

Notes: Chrisman was one of the Funny Car pioneers. His '64 Comet was the first of its kind (Dodge Chargers aside). The car inspired the Funny Car class more than any other. He was constantly pushing the envelope, going faster and faster. He had stunned the drag racing world in '67 by running 7.60/191.08 at Indy. So it was sad to see this great driver run so poorly in '70. The car was always (and I mean always!) prone to breakage. His times were way off what they had been even two years earlier. Jack Chrisman had been the Coca-Cola Cavalcade of Stars captain in '69. He withdrew from the Coca-Cola tour for '70. On May 9th, he was at Irwindale for an eight-car show. In the opening round of eliminations, his 8.19/173.41 lost to eventual winner Wendell Shipman who was driving John Mazmanian's car. Jack was at Lions on June 27 for an eight-car show. Unfortunately, he broke on the line against Dave Beebe in the first round. He also broke on the line in the first round at the OCIR Nitro Championships held on July 3. Eventual winner Arnie Behling advanced when the Mustang broke. The following day he was at Irwindale's Fourth of July race. Chrisman qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 7.88, but once again, the car came up ailing in the first round, and he lost to Dean LaPole's 8.50. He went to Lions on July 11 for the AHRA All-American race. He failed to qualify for the eight-car field, but there were so many FCs on hand that they created a second eight to run against each other. In the first round of this "second eight," Jack's 8.19/145.16 beat Bob McFarland's quicker 8.11/176. But in the semifinals, breakage persisted, and he slowed to 11.79/72.23 in a loss to Eldridge's 8.38/133. The following week (July 17), he was at Irwindale for a sixteen-car show. He qualified #13 with an 8.75, and his ailing 8.59 in the opening round of eliminations lost to Dave Beebe's 8.02. Jack was back at OCIR on July 25 for the PDA Championships. This was another sixteen-car show, and his 8.19/170.13 advanced when his opponent, Vic Morse, broke. But it was the same old story in round two when the Mustang broke against Dave Condit. Jack raced at Irwindale's Gold Cup Championships held on August 1st. In the first round, Chrisman's ailing 8.69/118.42 lost to Dick Poll's 8.26/180. Jack was at Lions on August 22 for an "open" eight-car show. He failed to qualify, but he had a "grudge race" with another non-qualifier, Marv Eldridge. Jack won their race, with his 7.54/185.56 being one of his better runs of the year. Eldridge lost with a 7.70/168. The Fremont Argus Newspaper in June 1970 noted that Jack's car had an overhead cam Ford. |

Notes: Chrisman was at OCIR on June 25 for its Nitro Championships. Nine cars attempted to qualify for the four-car field, and his 6.24/225.56 qualified on the "bump." In the first round, his troubled 8.14/100.78 lost to Tripp Shumake's 6.14/240. Steve attempted to qualify at Denver for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals, but his 6.451/220.58 (fourth alternate) failed to make the eight-car field. He ran 6.08/222.22 at OCIR on 8/27/83 (video). Steve was a DNQ at the World Finals, but times were unavailable. The 1700 lb. match race machine faced on and off again legality with the NHRA. | Chrisman first ran AA in June '83 with the Plueger Bros. Omni, went 6.25. I didn't know they ran a 417 until I stood next to the car since they ran black valve covers. Stainless steel mag offset for the Mooneyham 12/71. Aug OCIR meet 6.11. Finals: 6.08. - Joe Moore |

Notes: The team ran at both Pomona events, but the World Finals was in a new direct-drive Daytona. They qualified on the bump at the Winters with a 5.993/231.96 and lost a close first-round to Tim Grose, 6.72/161 to 6.861/220.58. The new car did not qualify at the World Finals with 6.533/209.30 numbers. | I'm pretty sure I saw an all-out 6.45 on the scoreboards in Finals qualifying. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Chrisman drove a direct drive Daytona for Plueger that year after the Winternationals where their '83 417 2-speed Omni anchored the Funny Car field with a 5.993/231.36. The DD car didn't perform like the previous one. At the Finals, I'm pretty sure I saw an all-out 6.45 on the scoreboards in qualifying. I watched that Plueger car in particular to see how they would do. They were at Carlsbad once, in black primer, April/May of '84, ran 6.89. (In person observation and ND.) Drag Racing Magazine May Meet article had a pic of the car, said McCahill was the only other direct drive car. - Joe Moore | This run did not get recorded on the official NHRA sheets, which show 6.533/209.30. - BP |
