Notes: Colson qualified #2 at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with a career-best 6.00/240.64. He lost to Don Prudhomme in the first round. At the NHRA Fallnationals at Seattle, a 6.14/234.98 qualified #5, but he smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to Nick Harmon. His season ended on a high note when he won the NHRA World Finals at OCIR. He had announced his retirement shortly before the race and then went out and qualified #1 with a 6.11/238.09 (Top Speed). He beat Dale Armstrong in the first round. In round two, his 6.21 beat Kenny Bernstein's 6.30, while a 6.41/231.36 advanced in the semifinals when Roy Harris crossed the center line. In the final, he faced Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." Beadle was running well, setting Low ET at 6.06. But in the final, he had trouble and shut off, giving Colson's 6.28/230.17 the victory. Ron did well in the NHRA points standings, finishing third for the season. |

Notes: The "Hawaiian" team showed up with the new Omni at Pomona. Colson qualified #11 with a 6.15/239.99. His 6.29/233.16 advanced when Raymond Beadle went into a wheelstand in the "Blue Max" and shut off in the first round. In round two, he beat Tom Hoover and, in the semifinals, a 6.34 beat Kosty Ivanof's out-of-shape 7.21. In the final, he faced Dale Pulde. Colson got out of shape and crossed the centerline, giving Pulde the victory. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Ron qualified #10. He advanced past the first-round with a 6.36/210.77 when the second qualifier Tripp Shumake had his steering go out. He got out of shape in round two and shut off against Tom Ridings in Joe Pisano's Arrow. Ron was at the Seattle Opener in April. The race featured an eight-car fuel Funny Car show, and Colson won the event. In the final, he beat Tom McEwen with a 6.15/238.09; his final round numbers were good for Low ET and Top Speed. On April 27, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Ron qualified the "Hawaiian" #3 in the eight-car show with a 6.09/242.58. A 6.13/242 beat Dale Armstrong in the first round, but he smoked the tires in the semifinals and lost to Paul Smith in Larry Coogle's "Sting." He was runner-up to Don Prudhomme at the Olympics of Drag Racing race at Union Grove. At the NHRA Springnationals, Colson qualified #1 with a 6.12/239.36 (Top Speed). Unfortunately, Prudhomme had a lousy time in qualifying and only qualified ninth, setting up a first-round meeting between the two. The "Snake" picked up to a 6.08/222 to get the win over the "Hawaiian's" 6.20/237.46. A the NHRA Summernationals, Ron qualified with a 6.085. That was his best time until the Indy 6.000 in the new Corvette. Did the team run 6.032 somewhere this year? (It was not run in either the Omni or the Corvette at an NHRA national event). |

Notes: This was the '69 Charger of Nelson Carter (Super Chief). The car remained intact except for a change in the paint job, lettering, and graphics. Verified by Steve Condit. The team bought the car from Nelson Carter in 1970. They picked the car up from the Native American reservation in Oklahoma in early 1970. - Tommy Naccarato | Car debuted in mid-1970 with aerodynamic '69 Charger 500 skin. Early hemi by Keith Black with TorqueFlite/Logghe combo, per 3-page feature in 10/70 Drag Racing USA. - RT | Dave was at OCIR for the second annual March of Dimes race on June 20. He lost fire in the first round, against Ed Lenarth. He was back at OCIR on July 3 for the Nitro Championships. Condit advanced past the first round when Don Cook's Corvette broke, but in round two, the "L. A. Hooker" could only produce an ailing 12.19/63.87 that lost to Arnie Behling in John Mazmanian's 'Cuda. The following day (July 4), he was at Irwindale's Fourth of July Championships. Unfortunately, he lost fire in the first round, against Gene Conway. He was back at Irwindale on July 17 for a sixteen-car show. He qualified #5 with a 7.91/188.28, but an off pace 8.20 in the first round, lost to John Lombardo's 7.77. Condit was at Lions on August 22 for an eight-car show. His opening round 7.47/195.22 lost to Ed Lenarth's 7.46/176. Dave came back out after being eliminated for a "grudge race" against the "King Camaro." He won the race with a slightly quicker 7.46/190.67. The "L. A." bunch was at Irwindale's Labor Day Championships, but Dave fouled (13.07/56.57) in the first round, against John Lombardo. | Originally listed 7.10/210 ET, and the speed needs to be confirmed. We do have a confirmed 7.37 from Lions 1970 and the 188.28 from Irwindale 7/17/70. |

Notes: This was the Beaver brothers' second Funny Car. The car was built by S&R Race Cars (Steve Plueger & Richard Conklin), and the wheelbase was 118 inches. Riveren Plastics made the Maverick body. The engine was a stock-sized 426 Hemi from Keith Black. A stock stroke Reath crank, M/T rods, and Forgedtrue pistons were used. Engle supplied the cam. Reath also did the cylinder heads. Cragar was used for the blower drive, and manifold and Don Hampton prepared the blower. An Enderle injection unit sat up top. The transmission was a Lenco two-speed, and the rear was a Ford with 4.30 gears. Kenny Youngblood did the lettering, and Don Kirby applied the enamel paint. The car cost $12,500 to build, and its best early run was 6.84/217. Was that the OCIR 216.86 from March? | Dave qualified at the first OCIR All-Pro race in Jan but broke and was not able to run in eliminations. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals on February 7, a 7.23/205.47 qualified #13. He lost to Larry Reyes in the first round. He was at Beeline on February 21 for the AHRA Winternationals. A 7.39 qualified for the show, but once again, he lost in the first round to Gordon Mineo. Condit ran well at Famoso on March 8 for the Bakersfield March Meet. He beat Dale Pulde in Mickey Thompson's Pinto in the first round, and in round two, a 7.13 beat Butch Maas in the "Hawaiian." Another 7.13 in the semifinal beat low qualifier Rich Siroonian's 7.20 in John Mazmanian's 'Cuda. In the final, his 7.17/204.08 finished runner-up to Jim Dunn's 6.99/212. OCIR held an eight-car show in March, and Dave qualified #1 with a 6.98. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the first round when he beat Pulde's 7.20/206 with a strong 6.87/216.86. Unfortunately, the Maverick broke in the semifinal giving eventual winner Gene Conway a solo into the final. On March 20, Lions held an eight-car show. Dave got out of shape in the first round and shut off to an 8.45 loss to Randy Walls' 7.04. The last OCIR All-Pro race was run on March 27 and featured a sixteen-car Funny Car field. Dave ran 6.99/213.77 to beat Cliff Zinc's 7.43 in the "Atlas Oil Tool" car in the first round, but in the second round, he lost fire on the line against Gene Snow. On April 11, at Seattle for the Northwest National Open, he got a runner-up finish to Don Prudhomme's on fire, up on two wheels run of 6.94. While everyone was watching the "Snake's" amazing run, Dave's runner-up effort of 6.98/215.30 wasn't bad. Early in May, he was at Wichita, where he won a best of three match race over Mart Higginbotham. |

Notes: Condit was at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. His 6.68/207.37 qualified #14 in the 32-car field. He improved to 6.53/213.27 in the opening round of eliminations to beat Mike Burkhart. His 6.57/216.34 beat Larry Fullerton's 6.96/205 in the "Trojan Horse" in the second round. But despite running another 6.53 at 217.91 in round three, he lost to Richard Tharp's 6.50/218 in the "Blue Max."The team failed to qualify at Pomona, but it wasn't for lack of power. The track was horrible, and a high seven-second time could get you a spot in the show. Dave qualified on the bump in Gainesville with a 6.607/215.34. He beat Harlan Thompson in round one, 6.789/187.89, when Harlan lost fire. He lost to eventual winner Pat Foster in round two, 6.36/223 to a 10-second shutoff. Dave was at Beech Bend in June for a Coca-Cola Cavalcade race. He ran 6.78/197.80 in the qualifying round, and in the semifinal, his 6.96/206.89 beat Ron O'Donnell. He faced David Ray, driving Mike Burkhart's Vega in the final. Condit had problems and shut down to 8.28/106.37, while Ray picked up the victory with a 6.83/208. He was one of three dozen DNQs at NHRA Indy with a best attempt of 6.75/218.44. Dave was at Ontario Motor Speedway in November for the NHRA Supernationals. He qualified #14 with a 6.506/216.34, but in the first round, he got crossed up against eventual winner Tom McEwen and shut down at 9.65. The best NHRA national event times were the 6.506 at Ontario and 218.44 at Indy. Dave ran 6.53 at Phoenix and 6.55/227.40 at the Lebanon Valley Coke race in 1973. Coke event promo poster from US 30 cited 6.51/227. | Dave went 6.46/231.95 at Green Valley. - Dennis Doubleday |

Notes: This was one of the cars chosen to run the Coca-Cola Cavalcade tour for '76. Dave was a DNQ at NHRA Pomona, but he ran really well at OCIR's Fox Hunt race in March. 27 cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field, and his 6.38 qualified #3. Unfortunately, he failed to reach the finals. He did appear in the final at Sacramento's Funny Car race later in the month. But he lost to Russell Long. Dave qualified #16 at the NHRA World Finals at 6.450/218.97. He lost to Rick Johnson in round one, 6.32/227 to 7.23/140. |

Notes: The Condits went out on their own after Dave drove for Plueger & Gyger in late 1974 and drove the LA Hooker in 1975 and 1976. Best Appearing Car at 1978 NHRA Winternationals. Dave qualified #13 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.398/203.61. An opening round 6.450/216.86 lost to Tom McEwen's 6.32/220. At the Bakersfield March Meet, Condit's 6.22/213.77 in the opening round defeated Gary Densham's 6.55/217. He got to solo in round two when John Force was unable to show, and he advanced with a 6.32/196.07. Unfortunately, the transmission locked up in the semifinal, and he could not race Tripp Shumake. Dave was at OCIR on May 13 for the NHRA Division 7 race. A 6.29 qualified #6 in the eight-car field. He and his opponent, John Force, smoked the tires in the first round, but Condit's 6.53/213.27 got the win light ahead of Force's 6.65/215. But an off-pace 6.70/181.08 in the semifinals lost to Henry Harrison's 6.26/223. The team failed to qualify at Indy with a 6.343/230.17 on 9/3/78 but could not qualify at Ontario for the NHRA World Finals. |

Notes: The Condits had an OK year on the NHRA trail. They qualified #9 at Pomona at 6.279/226.13 but lost a close round one to Raymond Beadle, 6.18/238.72 to 6.260/236.22. At Indy, they were 5th alternate after making the maximum number of runs - 10! They were rewarded with a nice but non-qualifying 6.197/236.84. Dave qualified #11 at Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals with a 6.24/235.60. He had trouble in the first round, and shut off to 7.51/118.42, while Raymond Beadle advanced with a 6.12/231. Dave failed to qualify at the NHRA World Finals at Ontario Motor Speedway (times not reported). The team sold the body to Garth Hogan in NZ. | '79 Top Speed/Low ET at the March Meet, 6.14/234, out of shape against Dunn's Trans Am first-round. (ND). Qualified at the '79 Fallnationals. Against Foster in the Fremont/April WCS 5.99 Super Shops Arrow, right-hand lane first time out Saturday, hazed the tires off the line, ran 6.11. - Joe Moore |
