Notes: Day ran IHRA PHR Martin MI 1986 | In 1986, Norm came out with a new Corvette FC. His first NHRA National event with it was at Brainerd. In round one he was racing Tim Grose when his engine exploded just past the finish line. It was one of the worst Funny Car fires of that year. The chutes burned off and Norm hit the ditch where the car flipped and he was trapped inside. The safety crew had to punch a hole in the side of the car to get him out. Fortunately, Norm escaped with minor burns, but the car was destroyed. I posted a clip of it from ND. He stopped the timers with a 6.06/238.72 on the unfortunate pass. In qualifying, his 6.37/229.59 was #15 for the show. |

Notes: All-Poncho funny was built by George DeLorean to publicize his Pontiac-centric speed shop in Ferndale, Michigan. Four-inch-chopped GTO shell sat super low on an owner-built chassis, low profile largely made possible by offset-from-center engine/trans and driver. 428 Pontiac with rare-for-1970 '63 SD crank and ultra-massaged Ram Air IV heads bolted to B&M Turbo-hydro trans. Four-page feature in 1/71 issue of Super Stock & Funny Car mag. - RT |

Notes: John was at Castle Rock for the Colorado Championships on May 12. It was an eight-car show, and in the first round, his 9.40 beat Eugene Kidder, who was driving the former Dick Landy Dart. He got to solo in the semifinal when Mike Standiford's Cougar failed to fire. He faced Art Ward in the final, and despite running a Top Speed of the meet at 172.08, he lost to Ward. |

Notes: On May 17, Dekker was at Frontier International for the AHRA Grand American race. It was a sixteen-car field, and in round one, his 7.73/191.89 beat Dale Armstrong's 7.93/188. But in the second round, his 7.85/191.48 lost to eventual winner Gene Snow's 7.47. He was at Amarillo Dragway on September 13 for the NHRA Division 4 final. A 7.72 qualified second to Jake Johnston's 7.46 in the "Blue Max." These two would meet in the final, where Johnston's 7.30 would get the win. John qualified the 'Cuda #12 at Ontario for the NHRA Supernationals with a 7.212. Unfortunately, he lost to Gene Snow's 6.95 Low ET blast in the first round. John also ran at the AHRA Grand Nationals at Oklahoma City in 1970. |
