Notes: At this car's debut event: Dudley's massive, long-lasting fire soon made the 6" holes in side windows mandatory on all FCs so fire hoses could be shoved into car if driver was trapped inside. Photo from Columbus 1988 (that run). The St. Moritz was never run again. |

Notes: Car and ET info taken from the May 1971 issue of Drag Racing USA magazine. Ran 6.80 at Irwindale 1/01/71. Confirmed 6.77 at OCIR Manufacturer's Meet in 71, which was runner-up to Foster's 6.72, and were the two quickest runs of that event. - ND | Jim had one of his best season's in '71 driving his low budget 'Cuda. It started at Irwindale on January 1 for the New Year's Funny Car Festival. He qualified #1 with a 6.99/180.72. He ran a first-round 6.96 to beat Don Schumacher's tire smoking 8.20. He went on to win over Tom McEwen and set Low ET at 6.80. The next day he was at Fremont for the New Year's Day Funny Car Championships. A first-round 8.36/182.92 lost to Jim Liberman's 8.25/187.88. He took another win at the first OCIR All-Pro race. A first-round 7.08/186.33 beat Rich Siroonian in John Mazmanian's Cuda, and he advanced past the semifinals when Stan Shiroma fouled. In the final, he ran 6.96/203.61 for the victory over Gene Snow's off pace 7.41/152. Lions hosted the first AHRA Grand American on January 10 and Dunn ran 6.75 in qualifying among the "unseeded" cars. In the first round, he beat Tom Prock's tire smoking Vega with a 6.92/171.10. He picked up to a 6.74/191.89 in the second round while beating Richard Tharp's 6.84/215 in the "Blue Max." In the semifinals, Jim got out of shape and shut off, giving Shiroma an easy run into the final. Jim lost in the first round, to Prudhomme at the second OCIR All-Pro race on January 24. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals on February 7, he qualified #10 with a 7.22 at only 183. Unfortunately, he broke in the first round, against Snow. At the third OCIR All-Pro event on February 13, he had an interesting day. In the opening round, Prudhomme’s 6.82/223 beat him when he shut off to 10.71/82.79. He got back in on the "break rule" when Shiroma broke a rear end. In the semifinals, Jim’s 7.14/194.38 lost to Rich Siroonian's engine blowing 6.87/221. Once again, he was placed, but into the field as Rich was unable to return for the final. Once again, he faced Prudhomme. He ran a sub-par 7.23/147.78 in the final that lost to the "Snake's" sizzling 6.62/226. He grabbed another win at the Bakersfield March Meet on March 8. He beat Fred Goeske, Shiroma, and Bob Pickett, in that order, to face Dave Condit in the "L. A. Hooker" Maverick in the final. Jim took the victory with a 6.99/212.26 over Dave's 7.17/204. OCIR held an eight-car show in March and Jim beat Gary Burgin's Camaro in the first round, with a 7.03/187, but he broke and was unable to run in the semifinals so Burgin was reinstated. At OCIR's final All-Pro race on March 27, Dunn ran 7.34/164.23 over Mert Littlefield in round one, a second round 7.28/187.11 advanced when Mike Thermos fouled. In the semifinals, Condit left before the tree was activated so Jim took it easy with an 8.62/143.76 to meet with Snow in the final. But once again, the 'Cuda broke and Gene singled for the win. In April, he was runner-up to Gordon Mineo at Irwindale where he had earlier set Low ET at 7.18. On April 24, Lions held an eight-car show. Dunn qualified #2 with a 6.99. A first-round 7.08/158.45 beat Leroy Hales' 7.42/198 while a semifinal 6.92/194.80 beat Shiroma's 7.00/208. In the final, he ran 6.96 for the win over Bob McFarland's 7.65. He was at OCIR on May 1 for the Big Four Championships. He lasted until round two where his 7.25/187.89 lost to Siroonian's 6.75/219. Jim won the NHRA Division 7 race at Irwindale. He qualified #1 with a 7.00/189.57 and on his way to the final, set Top Speed at 214.79. In the final, he beat Dave Beebe in the "Mr. Ed" Charger. He was back at Irwindale on May 31 for the Memorial Day Championships. Unfortunately, he fouled against low qualifier Sush Matsubara in the first round. Jim shut off to 7.54. At Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals, Jim qualified #11 in the tough show, but he lost to Snow in the opening round. Dunn took a win the easy way on June 27 at Fremont for the NHRA's second Division 7 race. He qualified #1 with a 6.96 and in the first round, he ran a solo 7.20 to advance. In the semifinals, Tim Grose broke against him, and he soloed again. This put Jim into the final against Tom Ferraro, driving John Hoven's Mustang. Tom broke just off the line and Jim soloed again for the win with a 6.94/196.50 (Low ET). The following week (July 3), he was at OCIR for the Nitro Championships. Things didn't go so well as he lost to Norm Wilcox driving the "Atlas Oil Tool" car in the first round. He made up for his early loss by going to Irwindale the following day and winning the Independence Day Championships. It was an eight-car field and Jim started his march to victory by beating Nathan Valdez in the first round, with a 7.22/178.21. A semifinal 7.04/186.72 beat Beebe and in the final, his 7.08/197.36 scored the win over Matsubara's 7.23/205. Later that month, he was at Lions for a sixteen-car show. He lost in the semifinals, when his 6.91 fell to eventual winner Shiroma, who beat him with a 6.79. |

Notes: Jim's 6.98 failed to qualify for the eight-car field at OCIR's second All-Pro race, but he got in after Pat Foster had problems. A first-round 6.91/186.72 lost to Jake Johnston's 6.87/215. He was awarded best engineered at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified on the bump at 7.154/198.42 and defeated Charlie Therwhanger in the first round with a 7.21 but lost to Jake Johnston in round two, 6.94 to 7.08. Jim ran 6.798/205.94 at the Tulsa PRA race. Set Bonneville's track record at 6.85, then reset that in the final with a win over Bob Pickett in Pete's Lil' Demon (but ET unknown). He qualified 5th at 6.464/213.27 at Ontario 1972, then ran as quick as 6.440/214.28 on his way to winning the race in an upset over Pat Foster in the Barry Setzer Vega. These were Jim's best times of the year. Ran 6.63/213.27 at OCIR Manufacturer's Meet. Qualified at final OCIR WCS points meet with a 6.67 on the last qualifying pass. Jim qualified #7 at 6.59 at the Lions Last Drag Race on December 2. He beat John Lombardo in round one, 6.54 to 7.47, then took out Sush Matsubara in round two, 6.54 to 6.74. In the semis, Jim ran into eventual winner Tom McEwen, who ran an excellent 6.40 to defeat Jim's consistent 6.64. Without question, the most successful rear-engine funny in drag racing history was "Big Jim" Dunn's Cuda. This was the only one that ran a six-second time and the only one to win a national event, the 1972 NHRA Supernationals. The car featured a trick Woody Gilmore chassis with Dunn & Reath's 392 Chrysler Hemi for power. Jim and the car were the primary subject of the movie Funny Car Summer in 1972. Dunn has mentioned that this car was very difficult to drive and seldom made a complete pass. Jim's best time was an impressive 6.440 - more than half a second quicker than the next rear-engine funny car. The car was replaced by a new Satellite in 1974. It now resides in Western Canada. |

Notes: Jim started his season at Irwindale's Grand Premiere race. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 6.97 qualified #6. He improved to 6.92 in the first round to beat Stan Bowman's out-of-shape Vega, and in round two, his 6.91/210.28 defeated a tire-smoking Gene Snow at 7.20/143. Another 6.91 at 193.96 beat Jeff Courtie's off-pace 7.44/142 in the semifinals. He was supposed to run Butch Maas, driving M/T's new Grand Am, but Mass blew an engine on the burnout. Courtie was back in the show as the "break rule" was in effect, and the two lined up again. Dunn once again got the win, running a 6.92/200.89 for the victory over Courtie, who smoked the tires heavily and shut off. Shortly after that, he was at OCIR for the second All-Pro race. This was an eight-car show, and his 6.78 qualified #4. But he was upset in the first round, where he had to shut off with problems while his opponent, John Collins, advanced at 7.14. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. The race was held over by rain over three weekends. In the first qualifying session held on February 3, Dunn's 7.80/198.67 got him the #14 spot in the sixteen-car field. But by February 18, his time had been bumped back, as now he was the third alternate. He almost got into the show, as the first two alternates got in when Jim Liberman and Dick Rosberg could not stay after the rain delay. He also had an interesting outing at the Irwindale Night Opener. It was an eight-car show, and after dealing with the horrible track conditions at Pomona, it was good to be back on a track with some "bite." Well, it just so happened that Irwindale had Bill Fredrick's rocket -car there, and the car ended up dumping a load of rocket fuel all over the left lane, making it useless. In the first round, Bobby Rowe fouled against Jim. He took an easy ride and then lost lane choice for his semifinal race against Bill Leavitt. Dunn slipped and slid all over his lane in their race while Leavitt advanced with an 8.21. With February ending so badly, you would think March was much better. It didn't start that way, as Dunn failed to qualify for the sixteen-car field at the Bakersfield March Meet. He wasn't even the first alternate, as Tommy Grove had that honor and got into the show when Jim Adolph broke. After failing to qualify at a couple more shows, he earned the pole at the final OCIR All-Pro race with a 6.65 (Low ET). His 7.07/200.89 beat Jim Murphy in the opening round, but he lost to Dave Uyehara in the next round. Dunn won the second NHRA Division 7 race at Irwindale in June. He ran 6.80/212.76 in the opening round to defeat low qualifier Dave Beebe's 6.72/219. In the semifinal, Rick Ramsey's 7.17/191 lost to Dunn's 6.78/210.77. He saved his best time for the final, where he ran 6.72/215.82 for the win over Gerry Glenn. On June 16, he was back at OCIR for its Lions Championships. It was an eight-car show and his 7.28 qualified #7. He went up in smoke in round one and lost to Mike Van Sant's 7.13 in the "Stone, Woods and Cook" car. Shortly after that (June 30), he was at OCIR for its Nitromethane Championships. This was a sixteen-car field, and in round one, his tire-smoking 7.75/153.06 lost to Joe Lee's 7.29/191. He also lost in the first round at Irwindale's Forth of July Championships. His 7.10/143.56 lost to Gary Densham's 6.71/223. He was back at OCIR on July 22 for the PDA Championships, but his opening round 7.12/187.50 lost to Mert Littlefield's 6.77/215. Jim competed at the AHRA National Challenge, where his 6.72/204.54 qualified #16 in the 32-car field. He was upset in the opening round when Pickett ran 6.73 to beat Jim's 6.86. Jim got a win at Fremont in October for the AHRA World Championships. He qualified #13 with a 6.63, but in the first round, he improved to 6.50 to beat Tom McEwen. In round two, a 6.53 took out Tom Hoover, but he lost in the semifinals to Ed McCulloch. Dunn's 6.77 lost to Ed's slower 6.93, but McCulloch lost an engine and could not repair it in time for the final. With the "break rule" in effect, Jim was brought back to face Gerry Glenn in the final. Jim ran 6.61/215.82 for the victory over Glenn's 6.77/204. He then went to Irwindale for the East-West Funny Car Championships and lost to Richard Tharp, driving the "Blue Max" in the first round. This was a rear-engined funny car. Jim qualified at NHRA Ontario at 6.478/203.61. In round one, he ran 6.53/207.37 to beat Gene Snow's close 6.58/192.71 but fell to eventual winner Tom McEwen in round two, 6.50/204 to 6.77/187.50. |

Notes: Fire photo (by John Shanks) included due to different appearance of this car, and to show it as highly likely Diedrich drove the car in 1973. Caption accompanying photo states “ During recent action at Orange County International Raceway, photographer John Shanks caught this spectacular shot of Mike Diedrich's Funny in flames after he lost his motor in the lights. Fortunately, Diedrich was unhurt.” However, knowing the long lead times and the use of photos to fill space, it is possible this was 1972, as it has been written that Diedrich “retired” at the end of 1972. Can anyone confirm? JM |
