Notes: Mike qualified #5 at Pomona with a 6.15/234.98. and in round one, he beat Gary Burgin's 6.47/229 with a 6.21/236.22. In round two, he was on the receiving end of Raymond Beadle's track record 5.93 in the "Blue Max." Mike lost with a 6.38/231.95. The team did not go to Bakersfield for the March Meet, choosing to run at Sacramento instead. Mike really opened some eyes when the car made a tire hazing 5.84 pass. This was the quickest time ever for a flopper, and it backed up the run Mike's dad, Jim, made in January at OCIR when Jim had driven the "Hawaiian" to a 5.85 while covering for his son behind the wheel. Mike's next pass at Sacramento was 6.11. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #13 with a 6.10/231.95. His first-round 6.064/233.76 lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.99/238. The team did not compete at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, and all the Funny Car teams boycotted the NHRA Cajun Nationals that year. At Columbus, for the NHRA Springnationals, a 6.12/229.00 qualified #4. In the opening round, he slowed to an off-pace 6.41 that lost to Tom Anderson's 6.31. Mike qualified #6 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with a 6.02/243.24. Roy Harris smoked the tires against him in round one, and he advanced with a 6.04/241.28. In the second round, both he and Beadle smoked the tires hard, and Mike recovered first to win with a 6.56/231.95. Dunn blazed the tires again in the semifinal and shut off to a 9.48/79 loss against Dale Armstrong's 6.18/231. Shortly after that, he won the Byron Manufacturer's Meet, where his 6.28/227.28 stopped Burgin's 6.36/228 in the final. Yet another win followed at Brainerd Raceway for the fifth NHRA Western Regional. Mike qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 6.28/233.76. In the opening round, he then improved to 6.23/234.98 to defeat Glenn Mikres in the "Bear Town Shaker." In the semifinal, a consistent 6.24/236.84 covered Tom Hoover's 6.75/222. He faced Bob Pickett in the final, and Pickett had troubles and shut down while Dunn ran 6.50/234.37 for the victory. Martin, Michigan, held its U.S. 131 Funny Car Championships that had all cars make two runs and the two quickest cars meeting in the final. The "Hawaiian" was strong, running 6.12/238.72 (Top Speed) to beat Frank Hawley's 6.13/220 in the "Chi-Town Hustler," and in the second race, Mike set Low ET with a 6.09/236.22 over Mikres. He ran Hawley again in the final, but the "Hawaiian" broke and slowed to an 11.00 in a runner-up effort to Hawley's 6.15/216. Mike won the Golden Gate Nationals. His best NHRA times were 5.933 at Indy and 243.24 at the Summernationals. |

Notes: Powder blue. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1982. Mike qualified #13 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.11/239.36. In the first round, he and opponent Dale Pulde smoked the tires with Mike's 7.48/225.56 getting the win light over Dale's 7.66/110. In the second round, he again went up in smoke, and he shut off to an 8.38/115.23 that lost to Frank Hawley's 5.94/238 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, Dunn qualified #4 with a 6.04/238.99. In the first round, his 6.31/232.55 lost to Billy Meyer's 6.29/237. Mike was at OCIR in April for the Coor's 64-car show. He set Low ET there, with a 5.96, but in the opening round, he got out of shape in his race with Kenny Bernstein and ended up smacking the guardrail. In May, he won the NHRA Division 6 race at Baylands. It was an eight-car field, and he qualified #3 with a 6.15/235.60 (Top Speed). in the opening round, he beat Sherm Gunn and a 6.21/230.17 beat Tom McEwen in the semifinal. His final-round opponent was Gary Densham. Mike easily took the victory with a 6.28/234.37 as Densham slowed to 6.61/215. The "Hawaiian" team showed that they were making some serious horsepower at Columbus when Dunn ran 246.93 in qualifying. But the power wasn't hitting the ground, as the ET was only 6.14. That gave him the #15 spot in the field, and he lost to Dale Pulde in round one. Things went better at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Although Mike only qualified #13, he beat John Lombardo, a tire-smoking Billy Meyer, and Gary Burgin, who broke, to reach the final. There he went up against Don Prudhomme. His final round, 6.15/237.46, finished runner-up to the "Snake's" 6.00/241. | 6.18 251.18 AHRA US 30 1982 |

Notes: Dunn started his season at OCIR for its Grand Premiere race. It was an eight-car show that had all eight cars make two runs, and the two Low ET cars would meet in the final. He and Kenny Bernstein both got out of shape and shut off in their first race, and Mike crossed the stripe first with a 16.11. In the second race, he had to shut down again when the "Hawaiian" went up in smoke. He lost to Trip Shumake's 6.65. Mike attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 6.493/233.16 (fourth alternate) failed to make the show. After qualifying second, he won the Bakersfield March Meet with a 6.08/240.00 behind John Force's 6.03/237. He set Low ET in the first round while beating his dad with a 6.00/240.64 to Jim's 6.19/241. A 6.07/240.4 in the semifinal defeated Tim Grose's 6.26/223. In the final, he beat Henry Harrison with a 6.04/238.09. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #7 with a 5.93/245.90. A 5.879/247.25 beat Billy Meyer in the first round, and he advanced into the semifinals when Force fouled against him in round two. But in his semifinal race, Mike's 6.06/233.76 lost to Frank Hawley's 5.94/240 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." The "Hawaiian" team was at OCIR for its 64 Funny Car race in April. There were 22 FCs, and all made two runs, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Unfortunately, his 6.05/243.24 time in his first race lost to Shumake's 5.93/233 in Joe Pisano's car, and his 6.32/230.76 over Bruce Iverson in his second race was still nowhere near quick enough to qualify for the final. The following weekend(April 9), OCIR did it again; they held another race run in the same format. Dunn still didn't reach the final, but he won both his races. A 6.27/234.37 beat Gary Densham in the first race, and his 6.24233.76 beat Mert Littlefield in the second one. He failed to qualify for the eight-car field at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where his 6.05/243.90 best was the second alternate. Early in May, the team made a stop at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. It was an eight-car field, and Mike's 6.81 qualified #6. In the opening round, his 6.53/230.17 lost to eventual winner Tom McEwen's 6.22/236. In mid-June, things went bad at Columbus during the running of the NHRA Springnationals. Mike had the throttle stick wide open during qualifying, and the car's supercharger exploded. The car then went up in flames, and Dunn drove into the "catch net" at around 130mph. The right rear slick had blown out and the body shredded upon impact with the net. Mike was ok, but the car was wrecked. Car owner Roland Leong immediately purchased Steve Chrisman's BB/FC Omni for racing the following week. Mike ran his best NHRA speed while qualifying at the World Finals. Unfortunately, he crashed on the run and could not compete. |

Notes: The "Hawaiian" team started their '84 season at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing. The car was using a Ford EXP body after the Charger exploded at the '83 NHRA World Finals. This was the first and only time the "Hawaiian" was Ford-bodied. He qualified with a 6.19, but he lost to John Force in the opening round. The car was still wearing the Ford body at the AHRA Winternationals in Tucson. Dunn qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 6.35. He improved to 6.28/230 in the first round, to beat Tom McEwen's 6.52/214. In the semifinals, he lost to Henry Harrison. By Pomona, car owner Roland Leong had enough time to put a Mopar body back on the car. Dunn qualified #14 for the NHRA Winternationals at 5.989/242.58, but he went out early, losing to Mark Oswald driving the "Candies and Hughes" car in the first round of eliminations, 5.93/251 to 6.09/239. The car didn't respond too well at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where Mike's 6.183/230.17 best failed to qualify. Things weren't much better at Atlanta, but at least he qualified on the "bump" for the NHRA Southern Nationals sixteen-car show with a 6.051/243.24. He lost to Al Segrini in the opening round, 5.90/240 to a 10-second shut-off. The big Bakersfield Meet was held in May, and the "Hawaiian" always made a showing there. Only ten cars showed for the eight-car field, so qualifying was relatively easy. Mike's 5.93 qualified #4, but in the first round, he hurt some parts while beating Denny Savage. He was unable to return for the semifinals. Getting past that first round was becoming quite the chore, and it continued at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals at the end of May. The team qualified #5 at 5.954/249.30, but Dunn's 6.08/249 in the first round, lost to Tim Grose's 6.00/239. That was still better than their performance at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where a stuck throttle sent the car off the end of the track on a 6.102/236.84 qualifying attempt. The Daytona body was destroyed. By July 1, a new body was on, and the team was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Mike ran a great 5.859/250.00 to qualify #4. He also got to go a few rounds, running 5.90s at 240-plus, finally losing to the eventual winner, Billy Meyer, in the semifinal when they broke. The following week (July 8) saw them go one round farther at the AHRA Grand American race at Gary, Indiana's US 30. A final round 5.94/252 gave Dunn the runner-up spot to Frank Hawley's 5.85/250 in the "Chi-Town Hustler."At the NHRA Summernationals, Mike qualified #8 with a 5.833/252.10. He beat Segrini in the opening round (5.884/250.69 to 5.99/246), but his off-pace 6.15/218 in round two lost to Meyer's 5.88. A 6.05/241 qualified #11 at Denver, but Mike lost round one to Don Prudhomme, 5.99/234 to 6.07/243. That was Mike Dunn's last NHRA national event for 1984. By Brainerd, Mike had been injured and couldn't drive. Rick Johnson took over driving the Hawaiian. |

Notes: Mike started the year by running 5.89/245.90 to qualify #14 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He beat Billy Meyer's 5.85/242 in the first round, with a 5.91/241.28 before losing to John Force's 5.75/252 in round two with a 5.90/250.00. In May, he was at Bakersfield, where his 5.82/257.87 (Top Speed and new track record) qualified #2 behind Force's 5.76/243. Dale Pulde broke a transmission against him in the first round, and Mike advanced with a 5.81. He got out of shape in the semifinal, and his 7.87/117 lost to John Martin's tire-smoking 6.78/199. Dunn ran NHRA Bandimere CO 7/86. Best 1986 NHRA national event times of 5.656/265.72 at the World Finals. Ran in the first nitro match race at Ennis (against Billy Meyer himself). Both cars ran 262 to show the track's potential. Also ran 257.28 at Indy 1986. Photo from Indy 1986. Original pre-Internet draglist entry. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. |

Notes: First 280 mph run in history. Also 5.48 at 273.14 at Ennis All Stars 4/87 (no records set at that event). Set national record at 270.43 at 87 Summernationals. Then at Indy, ran 278.89, but did not back it up. However, did run 274.64, which the 278.89 backed up for the record. Finally, reset national record at 280.72 at Chief Nats. Ran 279.93 at Ennis 10/87 to back up record. Set ET record at 5.443 at Chief Nats (but ran 5.405 in qualifying). Duplicated 280.72 at World Finals (at 5.419). Photo from Indy 1987. | Mike was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified #3 with a career best (to this point) 5.56/266.42. In the first round, he broke a blower pulley and slowed to 6.50/143.35 in a loss to Dale Pulde's 5.80/246. |

Notes: Mike and Joe had a good season in '89. It started at the Winternationals, where Mike qualified #2 with a 5.34/279.85 (Top Speed). He had a bit of a snooze in the first round, and his 5.42/269.13 lost to Jim White's 5.46/258. They went on to the Supernationals, where they lost in the first round once again. At the Gatornationals, Mike set track records of 5.28/280.19 in qualifying #1, but for the third straight race, they lost in round one, this time to R.C. Sherman. Things went much better in Atlanta for the Southern Nationals. A 5.48/266.35 qualified #5. In the first two rounds, he beat Tony McCallum and low qualifier Bruce Larson. In the semifinal, he beat Don Prudhomme's 5.53 with a 5.48/263.15. In the final, he met newcomer Eric Reed. Reed smoked the tires, and Dunn claimed his first win of the season with a 5.60/264.08. The next event on the schedule was the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. Mike used a 5.31/280.98 (Top Speed) qualified #2. He lost to Art Hendey in round one. Mike took his second win at the Cajun Nationals. He qualified #3 with a 5.44/272.23 (Top Speed). He beat Tom Hoover in the first round, and in the second round, he got a solo because his competition, Whit Bazemore, was unable to run. Both he and Prudhomme smoked the tires in the semifinal, but Mike's 5.83/254 came out on top. In the final, he faced John Martin, but Martin broke, and Dunn's 5.63/268.25 got the victory. The seventh race of the season was the Springnationals. Mike qualified #4 with a 5.33/274.97. He beat Martin in the first round. In the second round, both he and Chuck Etchells smoked the tires, and Chuck got the win. Mike and the Joe Pisano team did not run in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, but they were back on tour for the next NHRA event, the Summernationals at Englishtown. Dunn ran 5.44 to qualify #10, but he lost to Ed McCulloch in round one. At Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, a 5.68/255.46 qualified #5 in the thin air. He beat Jim Murphy in round one before losing to Kenny Bernstein's 5.62 with a 5.65 in round two. At Sonoma at the end of July for the NHRA California Nationals, Mike qualified #12 with a 5.59/265.33 but lost to Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car in the first round. Also ran 5.397 at the 1989 US Nationals. The car was deep PURPLE. The best NHRA National Event times were the 5.281/280.98. Photo from Columbus 1989. |

Notes: Mike qualified #4 at Pomona with a 5.39/266.82. In the opening round, his 5.44/251.53 beat Tom Hoover's 5.51/269. He then beat Al Hofmann in round two with a 5.46/263.92. Low qualifier Glenn Mikres stopped him in the semi-final with a 5.28/284 to his 5.39/266.98. He qualified #5 at the NHRA Arizona Nationals with a 5.38/266.50. He beat Jerry Caminito in round one and got some "revenge" on Mikres in round two, where his 5.36/274 defeated Glenn's 5.35/280. But he lost in the semi-final, where another 5.36 at 263 fell to John Force's 5.30/270. The next stop was at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. Mike's 5.33/270.51 qualified #6. He beat Hofmann in round one, and a 5.46/251.39 in round two lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.30/278. Shortly after that, he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 5.31/271.98 qualified #4. Gary Densham lost to his 5.36/261.62 in round one. In the second round, Dunn's 5.34/264.93 dropped Mikres' 5.49/266. He had a close race against Mark Oswald in the semi-final that saw both drivers run 5.38 (Dunn at 269.62), but eventual winner Oswald got the "win" light. The team then went to Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. It was just an eight-car field, and Mike qualified #3 with a 5.37/271.00. Oswald stopped him again, this time in round one, where Mike's 5.52/264.23 lost to Mark's 5.38/249. He was a little "off pace" at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He "only" qualified #9 at 5.36/271.49. He beat Hofmann in round one before losing to Force in round two. He made up for it by winning the NHRA Mid-South Nationals held at Memphis in the first week of May. He had qualified #3 with a 5.31/273.97. A 5.35/269.86 beat Freddie Neely, followed by a 5.36/276.07 over Caminito's 5.59/258. In the semi-final, he defeated Jim White driving the "Hawaiian" with a 5.33. He faced Tom Hoover in the final, and Hoover had been running 5.4s. Mike picked up to a 5.30/275.31 in the final to claim the victory over Tom's 5.71/215. He then doubled it up by winning the NHRA Springnationals at Columbus. His 5.28/273.39 qualified second to White's 5.25/278. These two would work their way into the final together. Mike also won the Mile High Nationals this year. His best times were 5.225 at Maple Grove and 279.50 at Sonoma. Photo from the 1991 NHRA Springnationals, National Trail Raceway, Columbus, Ohio. |

Notes: Did the team race the blown fuel car this early? They still ran the injected nitro Cuda at Gainesville 3/72. We need to confirm if this was 1971 or 1972. |
