Notes: Injected fuel. 1964 Chevelle with 1965 front end. Ran car into early 1966. | Durham kept pace with the funny car revolution of 1965, updating the Chevelle with 1965 sheetmetal and ading injectors and nitromethane. Those changes netted bests of 9.56 and 150 mph. - From "#48: Top NHRA Drivers of All Time" |

Notes: Injected here but added a supercharger and went as quick and fast as 7.98/178. The Strip Blazer V Corvair was offered for sale by Durham in the 10/27/67 Drag Times, who described it as "one of the world's fastest unblown Chevy-powered machines, with a best of 8.35 at the ('67) Super Stock Nationals." Car was offered completely at the time, sporting Hilborn injection. – RT | On April 16, Durham was at Southeastern International for a best of three match against Phil Bonner's newly lengthened SOHC Mustang. Malcolm didn't do so well as he lost two straight, but the two raced there again on Sunday (April 17), and the tables were turned. Bonner won the first race, but in their second race, Phil was overly confident that he won, and he pulled the 'chute early only to watch the Corvair zoom past for the win. The Mustang blew its transmission and was done for the day, so Durham ran a solo 8.98/166.50 to win the match. On May 28, Durham was at Englishtown for a best of three match against Bill Lawton. Malcolm didn't run too well that day as he lost two straight when the Corvair kept getting out of shape. He made runs of 9.52/157.33 and 9.31/156.79, while Lawton was long gone with runs of 8.62 and 8.81 at 164. |

Notes: Durham spent the off-season completing a new Logghe-chassised Camaro that proved to be one of his best rides. He clocked 7.5-second elapsed times regularly in 1968 and broke the 200-mph barrier in 1969. - NHRA | Malcolm was at Orlando for the second annual East Coast Funny Car Championships on February 18. He qualified for the show but hurt his motor and could not run. On May 5, he was at the Funny Car Invitational at Aquasco, but he fouled against Clare Sanders in the first round. Durham was at Cecil County for the Fuel Showdown on May 18. He was caught napping on the line by Arnie Beswick in the first round, when Malcolm's 8.16/180 lost to Beswick's 8.34/156. He faced off against Beswick in a best two out of three match race at Aquasco on June 16. Malcolm had a bad day losing two straight. In the first race, he lost fire, and Arnie soloed to a win. In the second race, his throttle linkage broke, and he lost to Arnie's off pace 9.74/124. He was at Cecil County for the CARS Magazine All-Star International race in July. In the first round, he ran an 8.43/176 that lost to Frank Federici's "Shark" at 7.95/187. Another match race was run on August 4 at Gary, Indiana. His opponent was Gary Dyer in the "Mr. Norm" Charger this time. Once again, Malcolm had problems and lost two straight. The first race saw Dyer's 7.74/180 just outright beat Durham's 8.35/150. In the second race, he blew a transmission and lost to Gary's 7.71/185. Durham did much better at Connecticut in early September when he faced off against Bill Lawton. Malcolm won the first race when Lawton's Mustang blew an engine. Bill could not run, and Durham soloed for the next race and won the match. The "Strip Blazer" Camaro became stronger and stronger as the season progressed. He won at his home track, Aquasco, for the first time on September 22. It was supposed to be an eight-car show, but Clare Sanders arrived late and Tommy Grove had no car, so only six cars ran. An 8.03/175.43 in the first round, beat Mel Perry, while in the semifinal, Durham got the odd-lot single and ran 8.12/178.21. In the final, he faced Bobby Wood, and his 8.20/175.78 got him the victory over Woods' 8.26/174. On September 29, he ran a best of three match race against Larry Reyes in the super tough "Super 'Cuda" at Englishtown. Reyes won the first race with a 7.71/190 when Durham lost a transmission and slowed to an 8.60/117.34. In the second race, the Camaro won with an 8.03, and in the third race, Malcolm wrapped up the match with a 7.94/183.66. Early in October, he beat Shirl Greer two straight at Houston. Every pass he made beat the former track record. He ran 7.69/186 over Shirl's 7.81 in the first race and a 7.63/188 beat a crossed-up Greer in the second race. Malcolm made a solo third pass and set a 7.57 track record at 182.92. This photo was Malcolm's first flip-top funny car, '68 Logghe chassis, B&N Fiberglass Camaro, Bergler tin, supercharged Chevy 427, B&M Turbo-Hydramatic 3 speed auto. |

Notes: This photo is Malcolm's first flip-top funny car, a '68 Logghe chassis, B&N Fiberglass Camaro, Bergler tin, supercharged Chevy 427, B&M Turbo-Hydramatic 3 speed auto. | Ran 7.50s at 190 plus in 1968 and broke the 200-mph barrier in 1969. On February 16, an 8.43 qualified ninth at Miami-Hollywood's Winter Championships. He met number one qualifier Clare Sanders in the first round, and got crossed up and lost to Sanders' 7.84/183. He met Fred Goeske at Suffolk on April 13 for a best of three match race. An 8.20/173.74 won the first race when Goeske's 'Cuda got out of shape. A not so pretty 8.95/170.13 won the second race over Fred's troubled 11.48/110. But a blown head gasket kept him from winning three straight. Another match race was run on April 26 at Capitol where he faced off against Clare Sanders. Sanders beat him two straight with a 7.97/176 best while Durham ran a best of 8.38/176.81. On May 4, he ran at the Aquasco Funny Car Invitational, but a first-round 8.13/180.00 lost to Jim Liberman's 7.84/187. He returned to Aquasco for another eight-car show on May 27. Don Schumacher's 7.84/194 best Durham's 8.18/184.04 in the first round, but Malcolm had some great luck when Schumacher blew his transmission while winning his semifinal race over Ron Rivero. Liberman had beat a fouling Leonard Hughes, so the final should have been Liberman vs Schumacher. With the break rule in effect, Rivero should have filled in, but he too lost a trans. They went back to Low ET loser from the first-round. That was Durham. In the final Durham fouled away a 7.93/185.94 while Jim ran an 8.14/184 for the victory. Lew Arrington faced off against Malcolm at Budds Creek, Maryland, on June 28. Durham won his first race against Arrington, but then broke in the second race and lost. He couldn't fix it for the third race and Lew singled for the match race victory. |

Notes: Malcolm was at Southeastern Dragway for its '70 season opener in March. It was a four-car race. Malcolm broke on the line against Shirl Greer in the first race. But he was reinstated for the final against Arnie Beswick when Greer broke on the run. In the final, he tied the track record with a winning 5.97 on the 900-foot track. Shortly after that, he set the Aquasco track record with a 7.27. On April 5, he was at York US 30 for an eight-car show. The race was run with all cars making two passes, and the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. In his first race, the Camaro broke. In his second race, Durham really made up for it, running 7.60/192.30 (Top Speed) to beat Beswick and gain access to the final. His competition in the final was Bruce Larson, who had run the second-best ET at 7.71. The two Chevy-powered cars had a good final round race that saw Larson set Low ET in winning with a 7.56/189 to beat Malcolm's 7.64/191.89. He was at Rockingham on April 19 for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships. He scored a big upset in the first round, where his 7.65 beat Don Prudhomme's 7.65. Unfortunately, he lost to Jay Howell in the next round. |

Notes: Aquasco held an eight-car show on April 4, and Durham was there. It wasn't a good day for him. In the first round, he ran 7.81/186.32 in a loss to Tom Prock, who was resetting the track record with a 6.60. After losing, he decided to come back out and make another run. Malcolm improved to 7.52, but the blower exploded and ripped the top off the Camaro. On August 15, Durham was at York's US 30 for the AHRA Nationals. He lost to Dale Pulde in Mickey Thompson's Pinto in the first round. Malcolm was at Bristol on August 29 for the IHRA All-American Championships. He lost to eventual winner Gary Dyer in the first round. |

Notes: Malcolm Durham had been running Chevrolets since the early sixties. His '72 car was based on a 118" Woody Gilmore (RCE) chassis. It cost $20,000 to build and weighed 1,820 lbs. Loyal to Chevy, the J&E Camaro bodied car used a 430 cubic inch "Rat" motor built by Durham's Supercar Engineering. It used a stock crank, Howards rods, and Arias 7:1 pistons. The cam was Sig Erson. Don Hampton prepared the GMC 6/71, and it sat on a Cragar blower manifold. The 80% nitro was fed through the old four-port Hilborn injection. The headers were by Jardine. A Lenco two-speed transmission backed the engine. On one of his earliest runs, he ran 6.79/207. Not bad for a "rat" in a "Hemi" dominated class. Hot Rod mag listed the best of 6.79/207 in late 1972. |

Notes: Cogo was at Green Valley for the AHRA Nationals in May. I wish I knew the ET he qualified with as he got the #7 spot in the sixteen-car field ahead of drivers such as Don Prudhomme, Don Schumacher, Tom McEwen, etc. But Cogo lost to McEwen in the opening round. Maybe the qualifying order was reversed and he qualified #15 and McEwen was in at #7. I will see what I can dig up. |
