Notes: John Force entered the '81 season with a new sponsorship with Mountain Dew. John qualified #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He beat Frank Hawley and Tripp Shumake in rounds one and two before fouling against Billy Meyer in the semifinals. He qualified #9 at the Bakersfield March Meet at 6.494/220.04, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Dale Pulde. Force smoked the tires to a 6.91/168.85 that lost to Dale's 6.28/223. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, Force qualified #12 with a 6.100/246.57. The speed held the national record for six minutes until Prudhomme reset it at 247.25. Unfortunately, he lost to Dale Armstrong in the first round. He failed to qualify at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals and the NHRA Western Regional at OCIR. The Funny Cars boycotted the NHRA Cajun Nationals in a move to generate more money into the class. At the NHRA Springnationals, his best of 6.27/231.36 was good for the second alternate. It was a long dry spell for Force, but he finally made the show at the NHRA Western Regional at Sacramento. His 6.43/233.17 qualified #6 in the eight-car field, and his first-round 6.87/181.09 lost to Jim Dunn's 6.28/218. Still, he had made the show. Things went the wrong way at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, where John's 6.63/218.44 failed to qualify (third alternate). Only six cars showed at the NHRA Eastern Regional at Indianapolis in July, so there was no doubt that he would qualify. He ran a 6.41 for the #3 spot in the show. Something must have "clicked" because Ric Deschner failed to show in the first round, and Force ripped off a 6.14/238.72 single. In the semifinals, he improved even more to a Low ET and Top Speed shot of 6.06/243.90 to beat Tom Anderson. All he had to do to win was to beat Craig Epperly in the final. That he did with another strong run of 6.12 while Epperly had trouble and slowed to 9.56. The best NHRA times were 6.049 at Indy and 246.57 at Gainesville. Handouts claim 5.99/247 in 81 or 82 in Citation. | ND reported the 5.99/247 at the Sept. '81 OCIR Parade of Champions, with a full semi-trailer pit shot. I missed it by a week on leave prior to permanent duty station in SoCal. I did get the handout picture in '82, though. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Force started his season at the OCIR Grand Premiere race. It was an eight-car show, and John showed up carrying brand new "Mountain Dew" colors on his Citation. In the opening round, his opponent Tom McEwen got out of shape and shut off. John ran 6.49/190.67 to advance. In the semifinals, it was Force who got out of the groove and had to shut down, giving eventual winner Hawley an easy(?) 6.13/230 run to the final. John was also in Tucson in January for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified for the eight-car field, but he fouled against Tripp Shumake in the first round. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His best of 6.30/215.31 was the eighth alternate for the show. He did make the field at the NHRA Gatornationals, where John's 6.17/240.64 got the final spot in the sixteen-car field. He improved to a 6.11/240.64 in the first round, to beat Bob Hilton, and in round two, a 6.43/230.76 got around Billy Meyer, but in the semifinals, his 6.26/238.09 lost to Hawley's 6.05/234 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Force went to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, but his 6.40/227.90 failed to qualify for the eight-car show. He did win the NHRA Division 6 Opener at OCIR on March 28. In the final, Craig Epperly fouled against him. John was at Tulsa on May 2 for the AHRA Springnationals. He lost in the semifinals when his 6.69/192.71 fell to Don Prudhomme's 6.37/238. He qualified #7 in the eight-car field at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. He advanced past round one with a 6.59 when McEwen crossed the centerline and was disqualified. He was late off the line in the semifinals, and his 6.51/233.77 lost to Tom Hoover's 6.57/208. The following week (June 13), he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Force qualified #8 with a 6.075/239.36. He beat Shumake in the first round, but in round two, he lost to Tom Anderson. He lost to Gary Burgin in the opening round at Kansas City for the AHRA Summernationals, where he qualified #6 in the eight-car show. On August 15, he was at Bonneville Raceway for the AHRA Western Nationals. In the first round, he ran 6.63/175.35 to beat Johnny West's 6.67/218. Mike Miller's 6.33/217 lost to John's 6.28/232.56 in the semifinal. He faced the "Snake" in the final, and Prudhomme was running insane numbers at this race, like 5.86 for Low ET, while the Top Fuel Low ET was just 5.85. So the final was pretty much a foregone conclusion. Sure enough, Force's 6.37/205.02 finished second best to Don's 5.99/223. Just one week later (August 22), he was at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals. But there, he lost to Ed McCulloch in round one. He got a big win at OCIR's Parade of Champions Funny Car race in September. John's best NHRA national event times were the 6.075 at Columbus and 240.64 at Gainesville. | At the last nitro points race at OCIR in March '82, Force won over Epperly in an all-Citation final. - Joe Moore |

Notes: The strip was so bad at Tucson on January 23 that Force qualified last in the eight-car field for the AHRA Winternationals with an 8.58. He lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme in the first round. At Pomona, Times were a little more normal for the NHRA Winternationals, where he ran 6.08/243.90 to qualify #5. In the first round, he improved to a 6.01/238.09 to beat Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." In round two, his 6.68/196.07 lost to Tom Anderson's 6.11/242. He then went to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, where he qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.03/243.24. But in the opening round against Tim Grose, the car went into heavy tire shake, and John shut it down to an 8.39/104. At the NHRA Gatornationals, John ran an excellent 5.88/240.64 to qualify #3. He beat Al Segrini in the first round with a 6.18/227.27. But in round two, he fouled away a 5.95 against Mike Dunn. Not only had he fouled, but to add insult to injury, he didn't realize it, made a hard run, and blew the motor in the lights. The car went into a fireball that was quickly put out, and he was OK. Early in April, he was at OCIR for its 64-car show. All cars were to run twice, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. In his first race, he smoked the tires and lost to Henry Harrison. In the second race, he did it again against Billy Meyer and shut down to 10.86. Needless to say, he did not run quick enough to reach the final. OCIR did it again the following week (April 9). The race was run in the same format. In the first race, John's 6.20/225.56 beat an engine-blowing Don Prudhomme. He set Low ET and Top Speed in his second race with a 5.91/248.61 that defeated Gary Densham. He lined up against Meyer in the final, and, unfortunately, he lost to Meyer's 6.06. NHRA held its Southern Nationals in Atlanta on April 17, and it was a hard field to break into as it was only an eight-car field. The drivers who failed to qualify included Ken Bernstein, Beadle, Meyer, Gary Burgin, Dale Pulde, and Mike Dunn. John made the show, running 5.94/241.93 for the #4 spot. In the first round, his 6.12/230.17 lost to Ken Veney's 6.03/233. John set Low ET and Top Speed of the Fuel Wars event at Fremont in April at 5.94/241 in the final, but was considered the runner-up as Mike Miller won all three of his races. The other cars were the Pisano car and Dale Pulde. Winner of the OCIR Son of 64 Funny Car 4/83 with a 5.91. He was at Tulsa in early May for the AHRA Springnationals. A 6.88 qualified #7 in the eight-car field, but he lost to Jim White in the first round. Shortly after, he was in Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was another eight-car show; he was the first alternate at 6.10/237.46. At the NHRA Springnationals, a 6.08/239.36 qualified #12. An opening round 6.01/246.52 beat Bernstein's 6.25/237, but John could not stop and crashed the car into the catch net. The team repaired the car for round two but smoked the tires and shut it off to 10.37/69.82 in a loss to Mark Oswald's 6.18/241 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. He then went to St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. He qualified in the field's top half (#4) with a 6.23/215.32, but he improved to 6.07/240.01 in the opening round over White. But again, he fell to that dreaded tire smoke in the semifinal, where he lost to Tom McEwen. Early in July, he traveled to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. His 6.06/233.16 qualified #7 for the eight-car field. In the first round, his 6.08/240 lost to Mark Oswald's controversial 5.62/240. At Englishtown, for the NHRA Summernationals, his 5.94/243.90 qualified #4. He ran 6.01/243.24 in the first round to beat Dunn's 6.11/229 in the "Hawaiian." A great light combined with a 6.03/241 in the second round defeated Veney's quicker 5.96/245. Prudhomme encountered tire shake against him in the semifinal and shut off while Force advanced with a 6.01/247. His string of 6.0s continued into the finals, but the 6.00/245.23 he ran finished runner-up to Oswald's 5.92/251. At the end of the month (July 30), he was in Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car show with a 6.22/232.55. He and Beadle had a really close first-round race that saw John's 6.22/238.09 beat the "Blue Max's" 6.22/239. In the semifinal, he fell off to 6.40/193.13, losing to Anderson's 6.16/220. John won a summer match race event at OCIR with a 5.89 in the final. He also ran 5.78 at 249.30 at the OCIR World Finals, ending as runner-up to John Lombardo. He became the 8th and final entry in the Crane Cams 250 mph Club for Funny Car with a 250.69 pass at NHRA Indianapolis on September 3, 1983. Good stuff on the NHRA tour with competitive runs all over and best times of 5.782 at the OCIR Finals and the 250.69 at Indy. | Video link from AHRA Tucson 1983. |

Notes: Talk about a bad way to start your new year. John was in Tucson in January for the AHRA Winternationals. On Friday the 13th, he crashed his Camaro into the guardrail during qualifying. He was OK, but the car was not as he failed to qualify. The damage was not too bad as he had the car running at Firebird Raceway at the end of the month for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. He didn't reach the finals there, but he ran well enough to beat the "Hawaiian" with Mike Dunn onboard. He was one of four cars running at Sacramento's East-West meet, where he was declared the winner after beating Gary Densham, who had his reverser explode in the final. At Pomona, his 5.92/249.30 qualified #9. He and Kenny Bernstein had a close first-round race that saw Force's 5.89/247.93 come out on top over Kenny's 5.90/251. He got to solo in round two when Don Prudhomme shut off with problems. John advanced with a 5.92/249.30. In the semi-finals, he lost a tire-smoking dual with Al Segrini. He stopped at Carlsbad and drove the "L.A. Hooker" in an eight-car show but lost to Bryan Ranes in the opening round. The week before Gainesville, he was in Atlanta for an eight-car show. His 6.19/239.36 qualified #6. In the first round, he smoked the tires and shut off to 9.54 in a loss to Segrini's 5.88. He qualified #9 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 5.89/247.93. Once again, the car went up in smoke, but his 6.55/245.90 still beat Tim Grose, who blew an engine at 6.79/142. In round two, he lost to John Collins. The following week (March 25), he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. Qualifying wasn't a problem as only sixteen cars showed for the sixteen-car field. Still, Force ran 5.95 for the #5 spot in the field. In round one, a 5.96/242.55 beat Jim Head, but a 6.00/241 lost to Don Prudhomme's 5.93/241 in round two. Things did not go too well at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where Force failed to qualify for the sixteen-car field. In the first week of May, he was back at Firebird Raceway for the Coors 32-car show. Denny Savage was supposed to run John in the final but he had hurt his engine and Gary Thompson took his place. It didn't make a difference to Force, who had set Low ET at 5.98 and then ran 6.07 for the victory. He then won the Bakersfield March Meet that was now held in May. He "only" qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 5.98, but he beat low qualifier Ed McCulloch in the first round with a 5.95/245. He smoked the tires in the final, but his 6.49/239 held up to win over a crossed-up Tom McEwen. John also ran 5.80 at ADRA Eunice LA in 9/84, 5.92/245.90 at Gary US 30, and 5.94/252.80 at ADRA Dragway 42 1984. Photo from Indy 1984. | Ran 5.76 over Jim Dunn's 6.02 at a Carlsbad match race in May 1984. Frazier and Force were surprising non-qualifiers at Indy, running 5.958/249.30 against a 5.939 bump spot. - Joe Moore |

Notes: John started the year at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing event in January. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 5.80/245.23. In the first round, he lost a supercharger, and his 6.00/200.89 lost to Don Prudhomme's 5.99/238. He qualified #3 at Pomona for the Winternationals with a 5.73/256.41. A first-round 5.76/253 beat Jody Smart, but another 5.76/258 lost to Dale Pulde's 5.74/252 in round two. | At the Sacramento Raceway Winter Classic 4 Car Funny Car show, Force ran 5.69/247.94 in Round 1 & the Low ET 5.65/244.57 in Round 2 & then was the Runner Up to Rick Johnson where Force ran a 5.81/245.91 losing effort to Johnson's 5.72/254.24. | He went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals and set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.76. He lasted until round two when a spark plug blew out of the cylinder, and he had to shut off, giving Dale Pulde a solo into the semifinals. At the Gatornationals, John again qualified #3, this time with a 5.71/254.66. In the first round, he smoked the tires to a 6.55/204.26 loss to Prudhomme's 5.78/251. John won the Englishtown Spring Funny Car Bonanza over Paul Smith in the Custom Body car, 6.29/229.88 to a tractionless 7.36/125.87. National Dragster indicated that "Force was batting about .735 at Raceway Park and had an impressive big-buck operation with the Coke-backed 'Vette." Force ran a 5.85/254.09 at Atlanta for the Southern Nationals to qualify #5. A 6.01/251.25 in the first round, lost to Smart's 5.95/224. His next stop was at Tulsa for the ADRA Springnationals. He made it into the final against Tom Hoover but was forced to shut off on the line with a water leak. On May 19, he was at Alamo Dragway for an eight-car show. John ran 5.91/237.46 to qualify first and then beat Doc Halladay in the first round with a 5.90/240.64. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the semifinals with a 5.84/250.69 take and took out Johnny West. In the final, he met up with Ron Correnti driving Bill Dunlap's Tempo. John made his worst run of the meet, a 6.00/236.22, but it was enough to beat Ron's off-pace 6.45/191. His speed of 250 was the Top Speed of the meet, beating out eight Top Fuel dragsters, including Dick LaHaie and Chris Karamesines. He got a semifinal finish at the Cajun Nationals after qualifying #4 with a 5.85/241.54. He beat John Lombardo in the "Blue Max" with a 5.97/240.58 in the first round, and a 5.97/244 beat Rick Johnson in round two. But he smoked the tires in the semis and lost to Kenny Bernstein. He went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, where he qualified #3, but he lost early. A 5.75/245.76 qualified #2 at National Trail for the Springnationals. He beat Mark Oswald in round one with a 5.89/247.38 but fell victim to tire smoke in round two, and his 6.29/223.32 was lost to Billy Meyer's 5.81/242. He ran at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Meet in June but had an oil pump break in the first round against Joe Amato's Mustang. Only 15 cars showed for the sixteen-car show at the Grandnationals in Canada, so Force didn't push it in qualifying, running a 6.02/239.36 for the last spot in the field. In the first round, he smoked the tires to a 6.50/179.49 and lost to John Lombardo's 5.93/246 in the "Blue Max." At the NHRA Summernationals, John qualified #3 with a 5.708/257.28. He beat Prudhomme and Jim Head in the first two rounds before smoking the tires in the semifinals and losing to Bernstein. Kenny went to Denver for NHRA's next event, the Mile High Nationals, where he qualified #3 with a 5.84/233.16. He beat John Collins in the first round with a 5.88/235.60, and in round two, his 5.95/243.24 beat Meyer's 5.99/222. This put him up against Dale Pulde in the semifinals. Dale had been running well, hitting 5.83 in his second-round win, so crew chief Austin Coil dialed in a little too much power for their race, and Force smoked the tires while Pulde ran another 5.83 to advance into the final. John skipped the NHRA Northstar Nationals but was back on tour for the US Nationals at Indy. Before the big race, he was one of the eight qualifiers for the Big Bud Shootout. Unfortunately, he was paired against Bernstein in his first-round race, and Kenny's 5.69 beat John's 5.78. The following day, John ran a strong 5.705/255.24 for the actual race to qualify #3. The field was tough, as attested by his first-round win. Force cut a good light, and his 5.83/253.52 held off Graeme Cowin's better 5.81/253. Head had problems and shut off in the second round, while John advanced with a 5.79/246.30. He and Pulde had a good race in the semifinals, but Dale's 5.79/249 outmuscled John's close 5.82/257.58. The next stop on the NHRA tour was Maple Grove for the Keystone Nationals. He lost a blower on a 5.72/232.55 pass on his last qualifying attempt. The time was good enough for the #6 spot in the show. He earlier had run 240.51. A first-round 5.97/230.88 advanced when Roy Harris lost fire. But in round two, his ailing 6.03/198.35 lost to Pulde's 5.72/246. He went to Englishtown for the following week (September 15) for the US All-Pro Funny Car Championships. The two lowest ET cars would meet in the final of the ten-car show. Force qualified for the final with a 5.89, and Bruce Larson made the other half of the final with a 5.85. John won with a 5.91/248.56 (Top Speed) over Larson's 6.06/210. John also ran 5.825/243 in winning the ADRA Kansas City International Raceway event in 8/85. John's best NHRA ET was 5.705 at Indy. Did John run 5.65 somewhere this year (ADRA or IHRA)? 1985 ADRA Champion. Confirmed 5.89/245.23, 5.89/248.61, and 5.87/252.10 in winning ADRA Spokane. The best NHRA national event times were 5.705 at Indy and 258.17 at Pomona. |

Notes: John started the '86 season with last year's Corvette, but he started running the Cavalier by the Gatornationals in March. In its first NHRA National event, John qualified the car #5, and in round one, a 5.81/247.38 beat Tim Grose's 5.97/209. In round two, John's 5.91/212.56 lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.66/256. He won the Coor's 32-car Funny Car show at Firebird in April. He ran 5.92/237.46 over Billy Meyer and a Low ET shot of 5.71/252.10 to beat John Martin. In the final, a 5.76/243.90 won over Johnny West's 5.96/249 in the "Hawaiian." On April 20, he was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 5.75/252.95 qualified #4. He beat Martin in the first round before getting out of shape in round two and crossing the centerline. He took another win when he won the Bakersfield May meet. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.76/243.90. A first-round 5.80/245.90 beat West's 5.84; in the semifinals, another 5.76/245.90 beat Meyer's 5.78/253. In the final, he ran Martin. Force took the victory with a 5.92/251.39 over Martin's 6.01/229. The next NHRA race on the schedule was the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge's State Capitol Raceway. John set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.66/258.17. A first-round 6.07/237.96 beat John Lombardo's 6.32/244 in the "Blue Max." But in round two, Force again crossed the centerline, giving Mark Oswald the win. Photo from Indy 1986. Listed mph from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. John's best NHRA National event times in the Cavalier were 5.647/258.17 at Englishtown and Baton Rouge. Where did John run 264 mph? |

Notes: First year for Castrol, and first year for NHRA National event wins. Photo from Columbus 1987. Also ran 5.453 at same Ennis race. | John started the season by winning the Super Bowl of Drag Racing race at Firebird Raceway on January 18. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 5.79, a tenth behind Kenny Bernstein. In the first round his 5.87/244.56 beat Gary Densham, who went into tire shake and shut off. In the semifinals, he improved to 5.73/247.93 to beat a tire smoking Tom McEwen. This put him into the final against Bernstein. Kenny had run 5.72 in his semifinal race and had lane choice. The two had a good race, but Force ran his best of the meet, a 5.70/252.80 to win, while Bernstein made his worse run, a 5.78/243. Things did not go so well at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. John blew up two superchargers in qualifying, finally getting a 5.67/260.94 run in for the #9 spot in the field. He faced low qualifier Bernstein in the first round, and lost when his third supercharger exploded. Things looked to be going in the same direction at the NHRA Gatornationals when once again a blower exploded in qualifying, but crew chief Austin Coil got it figured out and John qualified #6 with a 5.66/254.59. A first-round 5.62/261.24 advanced when Jerry Caminito fouled, but in round two, his 5.69/257.58 lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.58/265. |

Notes: In January, John started his season at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. His track record 5.34 at 266.27 qualified #1 for the eight-car field. He then made his way to the final by running 5.40/268.85 over Johnny West's 5.93/243 in the "Hawaiian" and 5.41/267.85 in the semi-final when Kenny Bernstein broke. In the final, he faced second qualifier Ed McCulloch, and his 5.47/267.06 got him his first victory of the season. The following week (February 7), he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A 5.44/274.13 qualified #5. He best West's 5.98/234 in the opening round with a 5.49/267.22. In round two, he improved to 5.42/272.64 to stop Bruce Larson's 5.58/259. But in the semi-finals, he smoked the tires to a 6.40/168.25 in a loss to eventual winner Dale Pulde who won with a 5.42/269. Shortly after that, he was at Baylands Raceway for its East/West drags. Four FCs were competing in a roundabout race. Force first ran 5.74/241.93 to beat Pulde's wheelstanding 10.84/77. He then ran 5.61/252.80 over West's 5.64/245. These two would come back for the final, and Force won with a track record 5.51 at 248.61 over West's 5.82/221. His next stop was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. This was another eight-car show, and he qualified second to Tripp Shumake. A 5.40 (Low ET) at 268.85 advanced in round one when Scott Kalitta broke. Bernstein shut down just after leaving the line against him in the semi-final, and John won with a 5.45/267.06. He faced Shumake in the final, and he fouled. His 5.98/249.30 lost to Tripp's 11.10-96. The following week, he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. In the future, Force would often win there. But back in '88, he was still getting his feet wet. He ran 5.40/265.64 and 5.36/270.02 in qualifying. The 5.36 gave him the pole. In the first round, the transmission failed, and he lost to Tom Hoover's 7.66/118. The rain-delayed IHRA Supernationals was run at DeSoto at the end of March. In the first round, his 5.64 beat Shumake's 5.69, but the car broke against Kalitta in the semi-final. He had qualified second at the Texas Motorplex for the IHRA Texas Nationals with a 5.32/279.50, but the race was rained out, and he could not return as IHRA ran it the same day as the Bakersfield March Meet. This race was now run in mid-April, and Force set both Top Speed and Low ET during qualifying at 5.57/259.36. But it didn't stick around long in eliminations, as in the first round, his rear slick came off, and he had to watch as Jim Adolph soloed into the semi-final with a 6.58/171. He also qualified #2 at Atlanta, where his 5.54/260.11 followed McCulloch's 5.53/269 at the NHRA Southern Nationals. After an easy first-round win, he got another in round two when Jim Head smoked the tires against him and shut down. Force advanced with a 5.58/264. He then ran 5.60/263 to defeat Bernstein's 5.72 in the semi-final. He faced McCulloch in the final, and the two had a great race that saw Ed's track record 5.52/266 win over John's 5.60/265.17. The team was having a rough time during qualifying at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. A 5.60 was followed by a tire-smoking, shut off 22.84. He then ran 5.55/263.69 and came back out and smoked the tires again. Still, the 5.55 qualified #1. But he was upset in the first round, where Chuck Etchells' 5.65/254 put his 5.78/254.23 on the trailer. After this race, Force was sitting in fifth place in NHRA points. Photo from Columbus 1988. |

Notes: Photo from Columbus 1989. | John Force started his '89 season at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. It was an eight-car show and he qualified #2 with a 5.37, but failed to reach the finals. John set Low ET while qualifying #1 at the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.32/277.26. He lost in round one, with a 5.46/275.22 that finished second best to Tom Hoover's 5.39/260. At Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, his 5.26/277.52 qualified #2 behind Don Prudhomme's strong 5.19/265. Once again, he lost to Hoover in the first round. Gainesville was NHRA's next stop for the Gatornationals. Force qualified #4 with a 5.36/276.92. This time, Chuck Etchells stopped him in the first round. He finally got past round one at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals where he qualified #10 with a 5.57/255.75. He beat Art Hendey in the first round, and in round two a 5.48/273.14 beat Hoover. His semifinal 5.55/268.01 lost to upstart Eric Reed's 5.51/259. At Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, he broke in round two and lost to Mark Oswald. He ran well, qualifying #8 with a 5.42/274.72 and improved to a 5.41 first-round win over Paul Smith. Oswald got him again at the next NHRA event, the Cajun Nationals, where Mark stopped John's tire smoking car in the first round. Force qualified #10 with a 5.57/267.61. By the seventh race of the NHRA season, the Springnationals, John was hoping his luck would turn around. It didn't. A 5.37/273.05 qualified #7. In the first round, he lost to alternate Jim White. He was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals on June 25. A 5.55/268.17 qualified #6 in the field. He beat Etchells in the first round, with a 6.06/177.97. But in round two, Oswald's 5.60/256 beat his 5.63/263.00. He qualified #7 with a 5.39/276.15 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He beat Tim Grose in the first round, but a 5.54 in round two lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.36. The next NHRA event was the Mile High Nationals in Denver. Crew chief Austin Coil tuned the car to a 5.70/250.00 in the thin air to qualify #7 in the show. John beat Richard Hartman in the first round, but in round two his 5.70 lost to Oswald's 5.64. On July 30, John was running at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals. A 5.45/274.22 qualified #7 in the field and he improved to 5.42/273.72 to beat Jim Murphy in the first round. In round two, his 5.51/272.97 beat Tony McCallum's 5.57/258. Unfortunately, in the semifinals, he ran into a hard running Prudhomme who strapped a 5.35/268 on John's 5.50/271.65. |

Notes: NHRA Sears/Craftsman, NHRA Topeka KS 94. Also ran 4.98 at Ennis (only Funny Car in the fours there). Force qualified #15 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.33/283.52. He improved to 5.26/287.44 in the opening round, but he lost to Kenji Okazaki's 5.23/273. He won the next race, the NHRA Arizona Nationals. His 5.14/288.27 qualified #7, and in the opening round, his 5.24/282.57 advanced when Dean Skuza fouled. In round two, Del Worsham's 5.25/264 lost to John's 5.23/285.35. He then defeated Dale Pulde in the semifinal with a 5.37/289.48. His final-round opponent was Cruz Pedregon, who had not run any slower than 5.20 in eliminations. The two had a great race that had Force getting his 33rd NHRA career victory, with a 5.18/288.83 that just nipped Pedregon's 5.19/253. |

Notes: Rick Howard photo from 1996 US Nats, Indy. Force put on a virtuoso performance at Indy in winning a record-tying 11th event of the season, a 59th career win and a record sixth Winston Funny Car title. And if that wasn't enough, he also won his 4th Big Bud Shootout. Force qualified #1 (4.966 Low ET of Meet and Track Record). |

Notes: In 2002, Force became only the third motor sports driver to hit 100 career wins, joining NASCAR stars Richard Petty and David Pearson. This win also gave Force a victory in a record 16 consecutive seasons. Prior to Force, Bob Glidden held the drag racing record with 1986 career wins and Don "the Snake" Prudhomme held the Funny Car record with 36. |
