Notes: Lived up to the Corvette Curse, but set Top Speed at OCIR. On December 6, Pat drove this car to a 7.46/204.08 (Top Speed) at OCIR in qualifying fourth in an eight-car field. He advanced past the first round with an 8.92 single when Frank Pisano had a rod go through the side of the block on his burnout and shut down. He advanced again with a solo in the semifinal when Gene Conway broke on the line. In the final, he had problems, and a 10.14/110.70 was no match for Larry Reyes in the Hawaiian at 7.34/200. |

Notes: On May 2, Pat was driving John's Maverick at the OCIR Big Four Championships. In the first round, he had an easy run when Pete Bagnard lost fire in Andy Clary's car. In the second round, he ran an off pace 8.51/201.34 that lost to Manuel Herrera's converted AA/GS Corvette that won with an 8.38/177. The car ran much better on its second outing the following week (May 9). Foster was at Irwindale for an eight-car show. He set Low ET in the opening round, where his 7.28/203.16 beat Ed Lenarth's 8.19/152 in the "Holy Toledo" Jeep. Gene Conway's Corvette broke a rear end in the semi-final, and Pat advanced with a 7.37/202.24. He faced Wendell Shipman, who was driving John Mazmanian's car in the final. Unfortunately, the clutch went out in the Maverick, and Foster had to settle for the runner-up honors to Shipman, who posted a winning 7.58/194. Pat set a 7.24 track record at Sioux City, Iowa, in the first week of June. Foster was having a bad day on June 10 at Budds Creek for an eight-car UDRA race. The Maverick lost fire against Ron Rivero in the "Frantic Ford in the first round.” Pat got it restarted after Ron made his run and ran a solo 7.74/185.94. He advanced into the semifinals, where he faced "Jungle Jim" Liberman, but again had problems. While making his second burnout, the car caught fire. He shut down and got out, and the fire was quickly extinguished. The fire was due to a leaky valve cover gasket. |

Notes: Pat Foster ran the "Damn Yankee" car at NHRA Dallas, Indy, and Ontario. At Dallas, he qualified #13 at 7.049/205.94. In round one, he lost to Rich Siroonian, 6.09/209 (is this ET accurate?) to 7.15/209.30. At Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, he ran 6.632/221.67 to qualify #3 for the tough show, but in the first round, he lost an engine, and oil got under the rear wheels. He got way out of shape and almost crashed into his opponent, Dale Pulde, driving Mickey Thompson's Pinto. Pat qualified #7 at Ontario at 6.985/202.70. In round one, he lost a close one to Jake Johnston, 6.93/205 to 6.96/210.77. Woody Gilmore chassis. |

Notes: Baddest dog in the land. Ran quickest and fastest times in the class in Round 1 at Ontario 72 (6.294). Then ran 6.30/235.64 in Round 2 and 6.31 in Round 3. Lost in finals to Jim Dunn when Pat redlighted. Earlier in the year, Foster had a blower explosion at Lions in May, hit the guardrail and destroyed the body. They put a new body on it and repaired the chassis at Buttera's. | Ran 6.59 Low ET at OCIR Funny Car 500. Also ran 6.47 at OCIR 72. Featured prominently in the movie Funny Car Summer. Pat was the number one qualifier at 6.36 at the Lions Last Drag Race on December 2, but the chutes tangled, and he went into the sand trap, damaging the car beyond repair. Omer Carruthers took his place in the field. |

Notes: In 73, Foster was still the driver. Burned the car at Martin in August. I think one of these cars went to Chuck Tanko. - Dennis Doubleday | Ran 6.360 (National Record) and 233.76 in winning Gainesville. Reported to have a 520 inch Pink Elephant. Also ran 231.36 at AHRA Beeline. - Danny White | Pat started the year off by winning the second OCIR all-pro race at OCIR, beating Sush Matsubara in the final. He also set Top Speed at 223.32. He followed that up by taking Top Speed honors again at the AHRA Winternationals with a 231.36 run. He failed to make the finals there, however. He qualified #3 with a 6.94 at the IHRA Winternationals at Lakeland and then set Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 6.63/214.79, taking the win over Ron O'Donnell. He won again on March 18 at the NHRA Gatornationals after qualifying #4 with a 6.489/216.34. Pat ran a 6.472/227.27 in the first round, over Charlie Therwhanger and improved to a 6.360/233.76 in the second round over Dave Condit. A semifinal 6.416/206.42 beat Al Bergler, and a final round 6.371/221.13 beat Don Schumacher's 6.416/233.16. Pat qualified #1 at the IHRA Pro-Am at Rockingham in May with a 6.49/223.88. He singled with a 6.53/196.07 in the first round, when Preston Davis failed to show. A 6.34/227.27 beat Jim Paoli's 6.55/214 in the second round and in the semifinals, a 6.44/225.56 beat Richard Tharp's wheelstanding "Blue Max." In the final, he slowed to a 7.02/194 for runner-up spot to Mike Snively's 6.53/227 in the "Mr. Ed" Satellite. Pat was runner-up again at the NHRA Springnationals on June 10. He qualified #3 with a 6.66 and improved to a 6.61/226.13 while beating Tom McEwen in the first round. Another 6.61 at 217.91 in round two beat Larry Arnold and a 6.74/220.58 in the semifinal beat Don Prudhomme's off pace 7.34/144. Foster slowed to a 7.01/216.86 that was second best in the final to Dave Beebe's 6.71/221. Pat set Low ET at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals while qualifying #1 with a 6.54, but he lost early there. On July 4, Englishtown held an eight-car show. Pat set Low ET with a 6.36/209.79, beating Jimmy King in the first round. A semifinal 6.67/223.88 set Top Speed as well, but he lost to Lew Arrington's 6.68/218. At the NHRA Summernationals, a 6.47/227 qualified #3. He ran well, getting into the final by beating Paoli in the semis with a 6.74/224.43. In the final, he lost a close race with his 6.78/223.32 falling to Leroy Goldstein's 6.74/214 in the Candies and Hughes car. He ran at Maple Grove on July 25 for their All-American Funny Car race. Unfortunately, he lost oil pressure in the first round, giving Harlan Thompson a single into the second round. More bad luck hit when he raced at the fifth annual Rockford Manufacturer's Meet. He beat Ron Colson in the "Chi-Town Hustler" in the first round, but blew a motor doing it and was done for the day. Things started going better at the IHRA Northern Nationals. Pat qualified #3 with a 6.98. He set Top Speed at 220.58 and made his way into the finals by running a 6.87/219.51 single in the semifinals when Tharp's parachute fell off on the line. In the final, he once again grabbed a runner-up spot when his 6.66 narrowly lost to Paoli's 6.65. In August, AHRA held its National Challenge race and a 6.53/212.76 qualified Pat #2. He made it into round three of the 32-car field before running a 7.36/154 that lost to Dale Pulde's 6.63/200 in Mickey Thompson's Grand Am. The following week it was off to Indy for the NHRA Nationals where a 6.39/226.70 qualified #5. Going up against Tharp in the first round, he fouled. This high dollar car was running well, but it seemed like every time the money was on the line some bad luck would step in. In September, Foster did get a win at the NHRA WCS Points Race at Englishtown. His Low ET 6.28 was good for a new track record and he set Top Speed at 231. A final 6.37/229.59 beat Jim Liberman's 6.59 for the title. Another win followed at the IHRA US Open. There, he beat Larry Fullerton, Shirl Greer, and Billy Meyer before stopping Dale Emery for the money. At the IHRA Nationals at Lakeland on October 14, a 6.69 qualified #1, but a first-round 6.94/174 lost to Colson's 6.86/209. | Beat Jungle Jim at an August match race at Englishtown. Ran bests of 6.27/227. |

Notes: The photo from the 1974 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. Pat Foster (#740) was the driver at Indy even though John Lombardo's competition number (#735) is painted on the car. Pat qualified at 6.48/215.82 and won in the first round, but lost to Don Schumacher in the second. Also ran 6.31 at Atco, 6.46 at Pomona, and 6.50 at Ontario. | Pat was at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals driving for Lombardo. He qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car show with a 6.59. In the first round, he shut off to an 8.68/108.04 that lost to Gordon Mineo's 6.52/197. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, his 6.521/215.31 qualified #8 and a 6.460/211.76 beat Paul Radici in round one, but in round two an oil leak developed on the line, and he shut down, giving John Collins a single run into the semifinals. He failed to qualify at the Bakersfield March Meet. Foster was at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals, but he smoked the tires and lost to Twig Zeigler. On April 6, he was at OCIR for the AHRA Grand American. Unfortunately, in round one, Pat was a little slow off the line and his 6.66/215.82 lost to Jim Nicoll's 6.71/211. He won the NHRA Division 7 race at Irwindale in July. Foster beat Dave Condit in the first round, with a 6.49/212.86 and in the semifinals, another 6.49/212.26 beat Jim Dunn's 6.83/174. In the final, he was to face Gary Burgin driving Jim Glenn's Charger, but Burgin had an oil leak and had to shut off on the line. Foster soloed with a 6.38 (Low ET) at 209.30. The 6.38 was the quickest time ever for a Donovan powered Funny Car (up to this time). Qualified #15 at Indy at 6.484/215.82, but improved to 6.319/223.88 in a first-round win over Dale Pulde’s close 6.369/220.04. Don Schumacher beat Pat in round two. Qualified #15 at the Ontario finals at 6.500/215.31, but lost to Jim Dunn in round one. |

Notes: Pat Foster took over driving from Ron Colson in 1975. | At the 1975 IHRA Summer Nationals (Great Lakes Dragway) in July, Pat qualified number one with a 6.397. He ran 6.45/225.00 in a first-round defeat of the "Chi-Town Hustler" and eventually finished as runner-up to Raymond Beadle (Blue Max) when he smoked the tires in the final. | Pat Foster drove for a lot of teams in '75. He started the season by driving John Lombardo's car at the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. Just a week later, he was driving the Pisano and Matsubara car. In March, he showed up at OCIR for the AHRA Grand American West race, driving for Keeling and Clayton. He drove for them until June, when Billy Meyer replaced him in that ride. Ron Colson was still driving the "Chicago Patrol" at the NHRA Springnationals, where the team failed to qualify, but the following weekend at the Byron Manufacturer's Meet, Pat was behind the wheel. All cars made two runs, with the two lowest ET cars meeting in the final. Foster didn't make the final as a 6.99/202.70 lost to "Jungle Jim" Liberman in the first round, and in the second round, he had a small oil fire on the line and had to shut off. The team then went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Foster qualified #12, but a 6.72 in the opening round lost to Tom Hoover's 6.61. At the third NHRA Division 3 race at Edgewater, the "Patrol" showed 'em with a 6.34 to qualify low in the four-car field. (Some divisional races had trouble filling their fields, so many shows were four-car affairs). Unfortunately, the car broke on the pass and could not run in eliminations, letting the first alternate, Don Prudhomme(!), into the show. The 6.34 held for Low ET. As mentioned above, he qualified #1 and finished runner-up at Union Grove for the IHRA Summernationals. Things didn't go nearly as well at the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. Although he qualified #15 with a 6.580/219.51, he lost to Dodger Glenn in the "Frantic Ford" in the opening round. Foster also went up to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where he qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field with a 6.680/216.34. An improved 6.490/221.72 beat Shirl Greer's 6.520/225.00 in the first round, but a tire-smoking 7.08/145.16 in the semifinals lost to Tom Prock's 6.457/217.39 in the "Custom Body" car. He failed to qualify at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. He failed to qualify at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, where he was the second alternate with a 6.43/205.94. The following week (September 7), Foster was at Rockingham for the US Open Championships. A 7.44 qualified #13, but in the first round of eliminations, he improved to 6.73/214.28 to beat Kenny Safford's 6.77/194. But in round two, his 6.81/181.08 lost to Gene Snow's 6.70/215. The team did not run at Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals but was at OCIR for the East vs. West Championships. There, Foster had nothing but problems, as he could not get a good run in because the car smoked the tires on every pass. He lost all three of his races. On October 5, he was at Irwindale's 32-car show. The race was run with all cars making two passes, and the two lowest ET cars would meet in the final. An opening round 6.58/207.85 beat Ed McCulloch's 6.63/216. In round two, he won when Neil Lefler broke a transmission. He failed to run well enough to advance into the final. DNQ at Indy US Nationals 9/75. Qualified #13 at Ontario 10/12/75 at 6.352/225.00, followed by a 6.448/222.22 to 6.600/226.13 win over Gary Cochran in round one. The unstoppable Don Prudhomme ended Pat's day in round two, 6.140/223.76 to 6.571/196.50. |

Notes: AKA California Chargers. Foster started the year driving the Pisano and Matsubara car at Pomona. In mid-March, he was driving the "Keeling and Clayton" car at OCIR for the AHRA Grand American West race. It was a sixteen-car show, and his 6.59 qualified second right behind Tom McEwen's 6.57. Unfortunately, he had problems in round one, where his off-pace 7.73 lost to Gary Densham's 7.24. |
