Notes: Big budget with a Charger top. On March 16 at Green Valley Raceway for an eight-car show, Garcia ran 8.01/180.36 and 8.13/178.57 to reach the final against Fritz Callier. A final 8.12/181.44 won the meet over Callier's 8.47/178. He faced Tommy Grove in a best-of-three match race at Kingston on April 13. In the first race, Grove not only fouled, but he broke a rear end as well, so Garcia's 8.93 took the win. Grove was unable to repair his Mustang, so Henry made two solo passes to win the match. He ran 8.98/173.03 and 7.70/180.00. Henry raced at the New England Funny Car Championships at Epping on June 8, running a first-round 7.83/170.50 over Ron Rivero's off-pace 8.59/169. Unfortunately, Tony Wahlay's 8.13 beat him in round two. On July 6, he faced Leonard Hughes at LaPlace for a match race. He ran an 8.02/162.74 in the first race, which he lost to Hughes' 7.78/196, and in the second race, he broke a driveshaft, giving Hughes two straight match race wins. Also in July, he raced at the Sunset Dragstrip 1/8 mile Championships. Joe Black fouled against him in the first round, and a 5.10 by eventual winner Bruce Larson beat him in round two. At the Drag World Funny Car Championships at Dragway 42, West Salem, he fouled against Don Biggers in the first round. On September 7, he raced at an eight-car show at Suffolk where all eight cars made three runs. An off pace 9.70-95.56 lost his first race to Arnie Behling's 7.90/178. In the second race, a blown transmission gave Lew Arrington an 8.06/129 single. In the third race, a 7.75/166.97 beat Ron Rivero's close, 7.76. He raced at Connecticut the following day (September 8) with and there he beat Bob Veselka with an 8.64/125.34 in the first round. He advanced past a broken Mel Perry in the second round with a 9.16/150.75. In the semifinals, Rivero got him back for the loss the day before. A holeshot 8.19/183 by Ron beat Henry's quicker 8.11/143.31. |

Notes: Followers of the Funny Car class noticed that the Donovan-powered FC's failed to turn in the big mph numbers. That was maybe true, except for this car. It could mph with the best. At the NHRA's soggy Winternationals, traction was poor, but Garten still was able to qualify the car #12 at 7.633/173.07. That was better than the 42 cars that failed to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Unfortunately, an opening-round 7.588/202.54 lost to Jim Murphy's 7.40. Roger was at an eight-car show at Lions in March. He qualified #4 with a 6.80 and set Top Speed at 215.31. A 7.01 beat Mike Halloran in the first round, and in the semifinals, he got around an out-of-shape Shan Shiroma driving the "Pacemaker" Vega. He won the event with a final round 7.39/191.08 over John Lombardo. He competed at the Las Vegas Opener, where a first-round 7.10 beat Jim Adolph, but in the semifinals, his 6.91 lost to eventual winner Dave Beebe's 6.89 in the "Mr. Ed" car. Roger finished runner-up to Gerry Glenn in an all-Donovan-powered Funny Car final at Irwindale's Memorial Day Championships. Both smoked the tires in the final, and Garten's 9.34/94.38 lost to Glenn's 7.06/191. As the season progressed, the "Warhorse" got stronger. Roger really flexed his muscles at the OCIR Championships in June. It was an eight-car field, and Garten only ran 7.02 to qualify. But in the first round, he opened some eyes with a 6.80/225.56 that beat Gervase O'Neil. A semifinal 6.61 at a whomping 227.84 beat Joe Lee's 6.91/207. No other Funny Car broke 210 during eliminations, and his speed tied the Top Fuel dragsters as tops of the meet. A final round 6.84/223.32 got him the victory over Mert Littlefield's 7.07. He was back at OCIR in July for the PDA Championships, where although he lost to Lee in the second round, he did come away with Top Speed of the meet for FC's at 218.97. Also ran 6.76 at OCIR. Roger's performance was a little "off" at the Irwindale Grand Prix. He "only" qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field with a 7.03, and in round one, his 6.96 lost to Danny Ongais' 6.88. He ran much better at Fremont a couple of weeks later (Oct. 14) for the AHRA World Championships, where his 6.55 qualified #7 for the sixteen-car show. But he lost to Ongais in the opening round once again. Where did Roger run 6.48? |

Notes: Roger was at Irwindale for NHRA's Division 7 race. He set Top Speed in the first round, where his 6.71/216.86 beat Neil Leffler's 7.05/179 in Jim Terry's car. A 6.74 in his semifinal race was not enough as he lost to Gary Burgin's 6.69. Roger qualified 12th at the 1974 NHRA Supernationals with a 6.481/213.77 and lost to Dave Condit in the first round, 6.31/223 to 6.647/201.34. He also ran 6.61 at Fremont. |

Notes: Roger ran at Pomona and the early half of the year with his former Mustang, but he debuted his new Mustang II in June at NHRA's Division 7 Opener at Sacramento. It was a pretty good debut as he won the race. He had a bit of luck along the way. His first-round 8.60 won when Dennis Geisler got out of shape and shut off. In the semifinals, a 6.62/197 beat Gary Densham's 7.55. In the final, he soloed with a 13.24 for the win when Gary Burgin had a small oil fire on the line and had to shut off. At the second NHRA Division 7 race held at Irwindale, Garten beat Billy Meyer in the first round, with a 6.67/212.76 before boiling the hides in the semifinals and losing to eventual winner John Lombardo. On July 20, he was at Fremont for the third Division 7 race. He ran a nice 6.59 but unfortunately crossed the centerline and was disqualified in his first-round race against eventual winner Jake Johnston. The following week (July 26), he was at OCIR for the PDA Championships. It was a twelve-car field with all cars making two runs and the two with the lowest ETs running in the final. In Roger's first race, both he and opponent John Lombardo had difficulty finding traction, and Garten's 7.51/199.55 lost to Lombardo's 7.22/193. He had the same problem in his second race, as his car smoked the tires. He won his round because Jim Dunn crossed the centerline, but his seven-second ETs failed to advance to the final. At the fourth Division 7 race at Bonneville Raceway in August, only four FCs showed up. Garten led qualifying with a 6.701/212.68 (Top Speed). In the only round of racing before the final, his 6.90/197.23 beat Bryan Raines' 7.16/150. In the final, he faced Dennis Geisler. The two had a good race, but Dennis' 6.72/212 beat Roger's slightly quicker 6.67/209.71. He was at Irwindale's Back to School race where he ran an opening round 6.82/214.74 to beat Dave Condit's out-of-shape "L. A. Hooker." But his second round 6.66/209.30 lost to Johnston's 6.39/227. Roger ran 216.34 at Irwindale on 10/05/75. He did not qualify at NHRA Ontario, but he ran his best ET of the year at 6.427/193.96 for the third alternate slot. Roger won NHRA Division 7 this year. |

Notes: Roger was at Fremont for its Nitro Bowl race in January. It was a fourteen-car field, and all cars were to make three runs. In his first race, he smoked the tires to 9.86/190.27, which lost to Jake Johnston's 6.45/212 in the "Pisano & Matsubara" Monza. In the second race, Gary Burgin failed to fire against him, and Garten soloed at 6.53. In his third heat, he had a great race that saw his 6.51 lose out to Raymond Beadle's 6.48. |

Notes: John was at Sacramento on New Year's day for a best-of-three-match race against Jack Holsey. It was not a good day for the "Warlock" as it lost two straight. John crossed the centerline in the first race, and his 9.68/85.96 lost to Jack's 6.70/203. In the second race, his 8.15/112.79 lost to Jack's 6.90/199. | Gazso drove this one and his own '72-era BB Duster at SIR '77 64 and the Manufacturer's Meet. Notes: Don was still running his '67 car at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Since NHRA had no Funny Car class, he had to run in Super Eliminator. Of the Funny Cars that showed up and qualified for the class, Gay did the best. He beat the Joe Davis AA/Altered in the opening round with an 8.18/181.80 and in round two, Sush Matsubara failed to fire, so an 8.37/161.57 advanced. In the semifinals, his 8.35/182.18 was stopped by Richard Galli's A/FD. |

Notes: Don Gay had his GTO at Green Valley Raceway on February 18 to take on Gene Snow's Dart in a best of three match race. Gay won the first race when Gene broke, but the GTO broke in the second race to even the score. In the final deciding race, both ran 8-second times, but Snow got the win. | Listing 8.95 until we get validated times. |
