Notes: Dodger was at Maple Grove for the Dutch Classic on May 11. It was an eight-car show, and in the first round, his 7.16/204.54 beat a tire-smoking Al Bergler. His 6.90 in the semifinal lost to Roy Harris' 6.82. Shortly after, the team was at Lebanon Valley for another eight-car show. Unfortunately, the "Frantic Ford" broke on its first-round race against Al Hanna, but Glenn came back to run a couple of consolation races and lost both. The first to Russell Long and the second to Paul Radici. At yet another eight-car event run in June, the Spring Funny Car Nationals held in New England; Dodger qualified last with a 9.59/142. Don't laugh; neither Kosty Ivanof nor Tommy Grove could better that time on the damp track to qualify. He burned a bunch of pistons in the first round while running Top Speed of the Meet at 213.77. He had beat Pete Hill but could not fix the car in time for the semifinals. He qualified last again on June 16 for the sixteen-car field at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. A 6.94 got him the spot. The car broke on the line in the first round against Bob Parmer. On July 25, the "Frantic Ford" was at Maple Grove for its All-American Series race. Unfortunately, his opening round 6.66/195.22 lost to eventual winner Kosty Ivanof's 6.61/165. A couple of days later (July 27), Glenn was at York US 30 for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. He ran well, beating Joe Jacono in the first round, with a 6.79/208.81 and a 6.99/204.08 advanced in the semifinals when Jimmy King crossed the centerline. He faced Ed McCulloch in the final, and an off-pace 7.53/154.63 finished runner-up to Ed's 6.69/209. Dodger was at Epping, New Hampshire, in September for its Funny Car Nationals. It was a 32-car show, and he won his first-round race with a 6.71/180 over Joe Jacono's close 6.74/190. Glenn got crossed up and shut off in the second round, advancing Kosty Ivanof. He returned later to make a run with some new rubber and ran 6.48/209. |

Notes: 1975 was a turning point for the Frantic Ford team as Jim Fox partnered with Freddy Frey. Media exposure for the Frantic Ford was tremendous this year, and the new machine, built by Walt Weney's S&W Chassis Shop in Spring City, PA, was destined for even greater exposure. Drag Times Newspaper featured the Frantic Ford on their cover in November. National Dragster, Drag News, Motorsports Weekly, and Drag World devoted considerable editorial and photographic coverage to the car during the year. Super Stock & Drag Illustrated Magazine assigned several pages of editorial feature space to the team in 1975. Second fastest car at the 75 NHRA Summernationals, where they qualified seventh with a 6.430/230.76 pass. Dodger Glenn was at Englishtown's Spring Funny Car Championships in April. Things did not go so well for the team, as the performance was off. An opening round 8.02/215.31 beat Harlan Thompson in the "Fireball Vega" when both smoked the tires, but, in the semifinals, Dodger again blew the tires off of it, and he lost to Tom Prock in the "Custom Body" car. He came back for a consolation race against Paul Smith, but his 7.57/188.28 lost to Smith's 6.58/193. Better things were ahead for the "Frantic Ford" team. At Maple Grove's Spring Funny Car Championships, Dodger set Low ET at 6.45, and he went on to win a strange final with Jimmy King. Jimmy lost a clutch and ran 12.97, while Glenn broke a rear end and took the win with a 12.52. He also set Low ET at the York Funny Car Nationals with a 6.62. He had run that number in the first round at 224 while beating King, and he beat Pete Hill in the semifinals to go up against Kenny Safford in the final. Unfortunately, the rain ended the race before the final could be run. The team was back at Maple Grove for the fifth annual Dutch Classic. A piston-burning 6.78/163.33 beat Prock in the opening round, but they could not repair it in time for a semifinal meeting with Tommy Grove. On May 18, Lebanon Valley hosted its Ridgerunner Funny Car Classic. Glenn ran 6.90/192.30 in the first round but lost to Hill's 6.84/175. Connecticut held its Memorial Day Funny Car Championships, and the "Frantic Ford" team was there. Eight cars competed, with all making three runs. It was not a good day for Glenn. He crossed the centerline in his first race, and in his second, he got way out of shape and shut off to a 7.19/140 loss to Thompson's 6.91. In his third race, the Mustang II again got out of shape, and he clicked it off against Hill. More problems followed the team at the New England Spring Funny Car Championships. The track wasn't the best, as Dodger's 9.59/142 qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field. That was still better than Grove, "Jungle Jim" Liberman, and Kosty Ivanof, who all failed to qualify. But in the first round, Glenn got a solo when Hill lost a blower belt on his burnout. Dodger went for his single, but his throttle hung open. He smoked the pistons and ran Top Speed at 213.77 but could not return for his semifinal race against Arne Swensen. Back again at Maple Grove for the NHRA Division 1 race on June 21, Glenn qualified #2 in the eight-car show with a 6.63 behind Don Prudhomme's 6.53. He lost early in eliminations. Dodger was at Maple Grove's Fourth of July Funny Car race. While he didn't reach the final, he set Top Speed at 209.79. As mentioned, he qualified #7 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Glenn beat Pat Foster in round one before shutting down to an 8.99/97.19 loss to Ivanof's 6.29/218 in round two. |

Notes: Glenn was at Maple Grove in April for its All-Pro Spring Funny Car Championships. It was an eight-car show. His 6.46/217.91 beat a wheelstanding Tom Prock in the "Detroit Tiger" in the opening round. The car failed to fire for the semifinal race against George Johnson. Near the end of the month, he was at York for its eighth annual Funny Car Nationals. In the opening round, he beat Tim Kushi with a 6.94. A 6.51 in round two defeated Bruce Larson. But Larson got back into the show on the "break rule," and the two faced off again in the semifinal. This time Larson won with a 7.00. Dodger also ran really well at Suffolk during an eight-car show. He had set Low ET at 6.42 and was up against Les Cassidy in the final. Unfortunately, Glenn crossed the centerline in their race and was disqualified. He also crossed the centerline at Atco's Factory Funny Car Showdown. This time it happened in the first round while he was racing Gary Burgin. On May 7, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Division 1 opener. He qualified #5 in the eight-car field, and he faced low qualifier Jake Crimmins in round one. Dodger's 6.93/211.76 fell to Jake's 6.44/222. Sadly, the 1978 season would prove to be a heartbreaker. Dodger started with a brand new Mustang II fiberglass body that went skyward in May at Englishtown in a spectacular wheelstand that unlatched the body. He later lost his life after crashing a new Plymouth Arrow. |

Notes: The Gerry Glenn driven Plueger and Gyger Mustang was one of the strongest Donovan-powered Funny Cars in '73. Most observers of the sport in '73 felt like the lower end of the Donovan failed to get the heavier Funny Car's off the line as well as it did in the Top Fuel dragsters. This team proved that that wasn't the case. Glenn's driving was good, but it wasn't just his driving that made the team win. The car was able to put down the numbers. He was out of a ride early in '73; in fact, he drove John Lombardo's car at the Bakersfield March Meet. But by May, he was in this ride. He won the Memorial Day Championships at Irwindale over another Donovan-powered FC, Roger Garten's "Warhorse. Both cars smoked the tires in the final, but Glenn's 7.06/191.39 got him the victory. Earlier, he had set Low ET at 6.59. He was runner-up to Bobby Rowe at Sacramento's NHRA Division 7 race. He qualified #1 for the 32-car field at the AHRA National Challenge race with a 6.48/214.79. The ET held for Low ET among FCs. "Jungle Jim," Liberman fouled against him in the opening round. In round two, Glenn's off pace 7.40 lost to Billy Meyer's 6.63. He was back at Irwindale for its Back to School race, where he set Low ET in qualifying #1 for the sixteen-car field with a 6.58. A first-round 6.66/204.08 beat Gervase O'Neil, while a tire-smoking 12.60 solo advanced in round two. Gerry's 7.03/201.79 beat Mike Halloran in the semifinals and moved him into the final against Mert Littlefield. These two were taking turns winning at Irwindale, and this time it was Mert's turn as his 6.68/216 got the victory over Glenn's crossed up, shutting off 7.83/141. At OCIR for the AHRA Western Nationals, he made it into the final against Tom McEwen, but the Mustang broke a rear end, giving the "Goose" the win. He qualified surprisingly slow (#15) at the Irwindale Grand Prix race. His troubles continued in the first round, where his 7.65/140.40 lost to Littlefield's 6.97/200. The team's next stop was at Fremont for the AHRA World Championships. It was a tough show as his 6.52 only qualified #6 in the sixteen-car show. A first-round 6.79 beat Dave Uyehara's quicker 6.65, and in round two, Charlie Therwhanger had to shut off on the line, and Glenn took a single. He advanced again in the semifinals when Dale Pulde had to shut Mickey Thompson's Grand Am off on the line for leaking oil. He was to face Ed McCulloch for the money, but the "Ace" had broken while beating Jim Dunn, so Dunn was reinstated on the "break rule" for the final. The race was good, but Jim's 6.61/215 got the measure over Glenn's 6.77/204.04. It was then back to Irwindale for the East-West Funny Car Championships. All cars there ran three rounds of racing. Glenn fouled against Meyer in his first race and then shut off. In his second race, he ran 6.48/211.76 to beat a fouling Richard Tharp in the "Blue Max" Vega. In the third race, the Mustang broke at half-track against Littlefield. Gerry also ran 6.56 at Irwindale. |

Notes: Gerry ran this car at the Irwindale Grand Premiere on January 12. He qualified #2 with a 6.56, but got out of shape and lost to Jim Dunn in the first round. Jim's new Satellite broke on the run and Gerry was reinstated for round two where eventual winner Gordie Bonin beat him. |

Notes: The Beachcomber Charger crashed at US 30 Dragstrip near Gary, IN in 1973 (I think). We used to have the whole side of the car, wheel well to wheel well, hanging in our basement after my brother brought it home after the crash. It had the car name with a surfer riding a wave on the side. |
