Notes: The car was later lettered as the Nitro Fever. We listed a 6.725/205 with this car. Tim qualified #14 at NHRA Bandimere with those exact times (205.01) on 7/25/84. Was that in this car?

Notes: Tim started the season with a runner-up finish at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #8 at 5.918/225.00. Tim and Steve Chrisman lost traction in the first round, but his 6.728/162.16 held off Steve's 6.86/220. In round two, he advanced with a 5.959/241.93 when Frank Hawley had severe tire shake and crossed the centerline in the "Chi-Town Hustler." In the semifinals, another 5.959/241.93 beat a tire-smoking 6.97/154 by Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car. Tim's final round 6.039/247.93 finished second best to Al Segrini's 5.96/234. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 5.780/238.72. Unfortunately, Tim blew a motor in the first round, and his 6.798/142.40 lost to John Force's tire-smoking 6.55/245. The following week (March 25), he was at Darlington, racing his Corvette for the last time before his new Firebird was finished. He qualified #15 with a 6.29 and in the opening round, the car broke against Roy Harris.

Notes: After driving the In-N-Out car at Pomona, Tim was still waiting for his new car to be completed, so he drove the "Custom Body" car at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #12 with a 5.83/247.93, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 6.116/219.61 lost to John Lombardo's 5.77/251 in the "Blue Max." That was Tim's only event in the car. Notes: A sharp Dave Uyehara Omni like the Strasser's. Grose was sound asleep on the starting line in the Winternationals 1st round running 5.78 to event winner Segrini/Pisano's 5.83. I saw this. This car had less than 30 runs when Pulde drove it to the '87 Winters Semis. (ND.) - Joe Moore

Notes: Tim debuted his new Firebird in April at the NHRA Southern Nationals in Atlanta. Unfortunately, he ended up as the first alternate for the show with a best of 6.108/234.98. He did much better at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, qualifying #5 with a 5.873/230.65. A first-round 5.970/240.51 lost to Jim Head's 5.94/245. At Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, Grose failed to qualify, with his 5.99/224 being the first alternate. Yet at the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #5 with a 5.821/230.17. He slowed to 5.979/222.88 in a first-round loss to Dale Pulde. The following week (June 23), he was at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. Tim beat Bruce Larson in the first round with a 5.82/241.98, but in the semifinals, he fouled away a 5.87/241.93 against Kenny Bernstein's 5.78/243. The NHRA's next stop was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Only 15 fuel Funny Cars showed, so you didn't have to run hard to qualify for the sixteen-car field, but Tim ran a strong 5.716/248.48 to qualify #3. In the first round, he faced Bernstein, and both cars ran 5.84 (5.843/244 to Tim's 5.847/243.63), but Kenny got the win light. His next stop was Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. He only qualified #10, but he beat Mark Oswald in the first round and worked his way into the final against Pulde. A good 5.85/233.16 finished runner-up to Dale's 5.78/252. It was then off to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where he ran a career-best (to this point) of 5.669 at 242.06 to qualify #2 behind Bernstein's 5.62. A first-round 5.776/239.10 beat Billy Meyer, and in round two, his 5.825/240.00 took out John Collins. Grose slowed to 5.900/247.38 in the semifinals, but it was enough to beat Rick Johnson in the "Hawaiian." He was up against Bernstein in the final. It was a good, close race, but Kenny's 5.77/249 got the victory over Tim's 5.805/250.13. Tim qualified #10 at Bandimere at 6.056/225.00. In round one, he lost to Bernstein, 5.79/245 to 5.957/237.46. He qualified #13 at Brainerd at 5.927/240.64. In round one, he beat Billy Meyer, 6.008/239.36 to 6.48/239, but lost to John Collins in round two, 5.87/246 to 5.905/246.57. Tim qualified #10 at Indy at 5.754/258.17. Nemesis Bernstein got him in round one, again, 5.70/255 to 5.954/255.24. Tim broke through at Maple Grove, winning the inaugural NHRA Keystones. He qualified #8 at 5.745/234.78. In round one, he beat Bobby Lagana, 5.751/230.71 to 6.71/173. He beat Rick Johson in round two, 5.739/237.46 to 5.91/241. In round three, he beat Dale Pulde, 5.802/244.83, to a 13-second shut-off. In the final, he was up against Kenny Bernstein. Tim finally broke the curse, driving around a Bernstein holeshot to take a 5.821/237.96 to 5.887/234.74 win. Tim qualified #14 at Phoenix at 6.012/227.27. In round one, he lost a close one to Al Segrni, 6.00/244 to 6.036/248.28. At the World Finals, Tim qualified #13 at 5.857/248.34. In round one, he upset Dale Pulde, 5.849/243.11 to 5.88/250. Tim did not show up for his second-round race against Kenny Bernstein. His best times were the 5.669 at Englishtown and 258.17 at Indy.

Notes: Tim won NHRA Winters with a 5.618/250.69 bests (Tim's best NHRA national event ET for the year). He ran a controversial first 5.40 run at NED one week after Gainesville. Roland Leong witnessed it and said it was a monster. Tim won a $50,000 payday at IHRA Bristol. Tim also tried a combo with header pipes exiting the top hood area directly in front of body A posts at the outside edges of the windshield. Benefit: All kinds of downforce. Problem: Absolutely blinded by header flames when at all dark outside! Photo from Indy 1986. Ran the same paint scheme with Skoal Bandit, Dan Young Chevy, and blank side panels in '86. | After winning the NHRA Winternationals with his Firebird, Tim showed up at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with his new Corvette. He qualified #13 with a 5.95/235.97. In the first round, a 5.97/209.59 lost to John Force's 5.81/247. In April, he was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he qualified #5 with a 5.80/246.30. A 5.83/246.03 beat Steve Hodkinson's 5.98/240 in the first round, but in the second round, he smoked the tires and shut off to 9.98/83.28 that lost to John Lombardo's 5.93/244 in the "Blue Max" Mustang. Grose qualified well again at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. His 5.90/236.28 was #7 in the field. A first-round 5.89/231.77 beat Gary Phillips, but another 5.89 at 239.87 lost to eventual winner Tom McEwen's 5.78/249. Tim got another big win at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #1 and, in the final, met Kenny Bernstein. The "Budweiser King" blew an engine, and Tim ran 5.87/231 for the victory. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #10 with a 5.91/245.49. Unfortunately, he lost to Bernstein in the first round. Grose competed at the Super Stock Magazine Nationals at Maple Grove. It was an eight-car field, and Tim's 6.05/219.51 qualified #7. He hurt some parts on the run and could not run in the first round. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals at the end of June. A 6.09/226.13 qualified #10, and a 6.00/234.98 lost to Force's 5.80/252 in the first round. A week later (July 6), he was in Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. It was an eight-car show, and he qualified #4. He beat Scott Kalitta's out-of-shape Mustang in the first round with a 5.94/239.36. In the semifinals, he smoked the tires and lost to Bernstein. He barely made the show at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, with his 5.90/243.37 holding down the #15 spot. He beat Brad Tuttle in the first round before losing to Force's 5.74 in round two. A couple of weeks later (July 27), he was at Bandimere for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He qualified #11 with a 6.06/229.00 but lost to Johnny West, driving the "Hawaiian" in the opening round. Not sure why he raced his old Firebird at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships, but he did well with it there, reaching the semifinals before losing to Bernstein. He was back driving the Corvette when he won the US Funny Car Championships a week later. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 5.88/241.93, and Tim's final round 5.83/238.76 beat low qualifier Jim Head for the title. Grose's next stop was at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He qualified #7 with a 5.87/250.69, and in round one, his 6.04/237.46 beat Norm Day's on-fire 6.06/238. He went to Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, but unfortunately, his 5.92/251.32 best was good for the second alternate. He then went to Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals, where his 5.82/232.01 qualified #8. In the opening round, his 5.93/220.15 beat Kalitta's 6.07/221, and in round two, he put Paul Smith on the trailer with a 5.97/228.07. But eventual winner Mark Oswald's 5.68/257 in the "Candies and Hughes" car stopped his 6.16/199.91 from advancing in the semifinals. Tim then went to the Texas Motorplex for the NHRA Chief Nationals. His 5.74/241.22 qualified #11. He ran 5.73/238.15 in the opening round to defeat Raymond Beadle's 5.79/250 in the "Blue Max." In round two, he fouled and shut off against Oswald. The 251.32 was Tim's best NHRA speed; he typically did not run high mph numbers.

Notes: Photo from Indy 1987. Did Tim run 260 mph somewhere in 1987? Tim was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified on the "bump" spot for the sixteen-car field with a 5.77/240.19. In the first round, he advanced when his opponent, Doc Halladay, got out of shape and crossed the centerline. But in round two, Grose's Firebird broke and Graeme Cowin soloed into the semifinals.

Notes: Tim was at Bristol in May for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #2 with a 5.51/258.39. In the first round, both he and Dominic Santucci smoked the tires, but Tim's 7.05/160.19 came out on top. A 5.78/237.57 lost to eventual winner Tony McCallum's 5.71/253. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals with a 5.71/212.36 best. In early July, he qualified #6 at the IHRA Northern Nationals at Milan, but he smoked the tires in the first round and lost to Doc Halladay. Grose qualified #15 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, but he lost to John Force in the first round. He competed at the Wolverine Nationals at US 131 Martin, Michigan, on August 13, but he smoked the tires in the first race and lost to Johnny West. The race was run "Chicago Style," meaning the cars would each run two rounds, with the two Low ET cars running in the final. On Tim's second run, he beat Tom Hoover's 6.01/209 with a 5.96/203.83. Tim's 5.96 best failed to make the final round match-up. A week later (August 20), he was at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He qualified on the "bump" of the sixteen-car field with a 6.04/248.89. He improved to a 5.84/205.24 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to get around Scott Kalitta's 5.50/272. Unfortunately, at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, his best of 5.57/257.36 failed to qualify for the show. He also attempted to qualify at the NHRA Keystone Nationals, but his 5.75/252.10 failed to get into the field. Tim's bad luck held over into IHRA events when his 5.78/241.30 (second alternate) failed to make the field at Bristol for the Fallnationals. At the NHRA season-ending World Finals at Pomona, he was the third alternate with a 5.60/248.96. The best NHRA times were a 5.578/257.36 first alternate DNQ at Indy. Did Tim really run 5.47/268 this year (ET at Epping again or is this an error referring to his 1986 run)? Removing those times until we get confirmation.

Notes: Tom was on top of his game in 1968; his best time of 7.52 set early in the year would have been a lot lower if the car had not been totaled in a crash at Virginia Beach, the same place he had run his Top Speed of 202 in May. But in June he had just finished running 201 and his chute failed to release. He hit the brakes hard until the master cylinder let go. Grove ended up skidding sideways into a tree and demolishing the Mustang. He finished out the season with his 1967 car. Before the crash, he had beaten the best. On April 7, he had a hiccup at Kingston where he lost to Larry Reyes in the "Super 'Cuda" in a best of three match. Reyes won their first race with an 8.12/187 when Grove's Mustang went into a wheelstand. There had never been a 7-second Funny Car run at Kingston until their second race when both ran sevens. Grove's 7.99/187.50 prevailed over Reyes' quicker 7.98. In the final race, Larry got the holeshot and his 8.10 went on to win the match over Grove's quicker 7.98. On April 14 he beat Don Nicholson in a best of three match. Another match race victory came at Norwood's 1/8 mile track on May 3. There he stopped Arnie Beswick three straight. His times were 5.15/148.50 over a fouling Beswick, followed by a track record 5.05/150 and a 5.35/140. He was at Aquasco for the Funny Car Invitational, but after the first-round it was rained out. He had run 8.63/184.42 (Top Speed) in a first-round solo, and he was Aquasco's track mph record holder at 187.88. Tom won the Cecil County Fuel Showdown on May 18. He ran 7.79/189.06 over Roger Lindamood (8.10/179), and in the semifinals, he reset both ends of the track record with a 7.64/194.38 over Roy Gay who shut off. In the final, a 7.65/192.70 stopped Jim Liberman's 7.85/182. On June 8, he beat the "Hemi-Cuda" of Fred Goeske three straight at Capitol. In the first race, his 7.71 at a new track record speed of 196.92 beat Goeske's 7.96/170. The speed was 5 mph faster than the old track record. Tommy got the ET record as well in their second race with his 7.64 at 190.66 beating the 'Cuda's 7.99/178. A final 7.76/196.92 finished up the match. He ran his lowest ET of the year at a match race at Cecil County against Liberman on June 19. He beat Jim in the first race with a track record 7.52 at 197.36. In the second race, a 7.81/193.12 did the deed, winning the match. - Ron Howard

Notes: Tommy Grove's "Going Thing" 1969 Ford Mach I Mustang was one of the best Ford powered funny cars of all time. Grove was loyal to the 427 SOHC engine and Ford. Logghe Stamping Company built the chassis and Paul Shedilik built and painted the Mach I Mustang body. Larry Shinoda designed the paint scheme. Master tin man Al Bergler did the aluminum work. Grove debuted the car in late 1968 and raced it through 1970.

Notes: Although the car signage says "Boss 429," that is a 427 Cammer in the picture. Unsure whether Grove ran a 429 at some point, but it was not uncommon for Ford funny car teams to revert to the proven (if increasingly difficult to source) SOHC motor if the newer 429 hemi failed to get the job done. Car received a two-page spread feature in the 9/72 issue of SS&DI. - RT | Tom Grove was successful in '71, running his Ford-powered Funny Car. No one else was able to make the Ford run as well in Funny Car racing as he was. He was much like Bob Glidden had been in Pro Stock in the '80's. Unfortunately, while Glidden's run at the top lasted more than five years, Grove's was much shorter. In one of Tom's first appearances of the year, he downed Tim Beebe two straight using the Boss 429. The following week he ran a best of 6.98/213 using the SOHC. This was at a race where the Ramchargers couldn't go better than a 7.03. Early in April he was at Aquasco for an eight-car show. Grove had a small fire on the line in the first round, and his opponent, Pete Hill soloed. After the fire was extinguished, Tommy came out and ran a single. It was a 6.98 at a track record 213.76. He was going to try to better this on another run, but he had a blower explode and was done for the day. On April 10, he ran a 6.82/218 at Miami that was equaled at Suffolk on May 9. His best time of 6.76 came at Capitol on May 19 using the SOHC. He was at Suffolk for a best of three match race against Mike Burkhart. A late 7.11/207.36 lost to Mike's 7.21/206 in their first race, but Grove came back to win the next two races and the match with runs of 6.98/211.26 and 6.83/212.26. The speed was a track record and the ET tied Gene Snow's track record. At the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, Tom had Low ET of eliminations with a 6.88 before losing to a holeshot by Charlie Therwhanger in the semifinals. Aquasco held a Ford vs Chevy Funny Car race. Tommy ran really well, running Low ET in the opening round with a 6.93/206.42 over Gene Conway. In the second round his 7.29/202.24 beat Terry Hedrick and a 7.27/205.46 won his third race over Malcolm Durham. On May 27 he was at Minnesota for a four-car, round-robin race. In the first race, Grove's 7.69/173.74 lost to Butch Maas' 7.25/168 in the "Hawaiian." In his second race a 7.37/207.85 beat Hedrick and the two ran again in the third round with the same results, Grove's 7.56/202.70 beat Hedrick's 7.82/198. Another semifinal finish came at Bristol on June 20 where he lost to Richard Tharp driving the "Blue Max" at the IHRA Springnationals. He was back at Aquasco for the President's Cup Championships where a 6.96/210.28 (the only "six" of eliminations and Top Speed) beat Roger Lindamood's 7.17/178. But in the semifinals, while pulling away from Mike Burkhart his transmission exploded and Mike overtook his coasting car. On July 7, Grove was runner-up to Jake Johnston at the King of Kings Funny Car meet. On August 18 in Baltimore, Maryland, Tom's car hauler and car burnt to the ground, and he was forced to use his '70 car as a backup. Then, on September 3 in Orlando, Florida, Grove won a Funny Car meet with 7.51/191 times in the old car. Times were close to the track record for Orlando. He had no trouble booking match races, since promoters liked the fact that he was one of the few Ford-powered funnies left. — Ron Howard

Notes: Grove was at Suffolk in August for its third annual Dixie Classic. It was a sixteen-car field and he ran a strong 6.91 in round two to beat Jake Crimmins’ close 6.92. Unfortunately, he lost to eventual winner Jake Johnston in the semifinals. At the 1972 AHRA World Championships (Fremont, CA), Tommy had to beat Tom McEwen twice in order to advance to the final round. In the second round, he used a holeshot and a 6.613/216.34 to beat the Goose's 6.53. In the semifinal he was to have raced Dale Pulde (Mickey Thompson Pinto), but Pulde broke on the burnout and McEwen got back in on the break rule via his Low ET loser (6.53) status. This time Tommy used a better 6.54 to beat Tom's 6.63, setting up a final against Gene Snow. In the final, Tommy beat Gene to the finish line 6.688/213.27 to a 7.368/131.77 and then exploded the engine and burst into flames. After Tommy put out the fire and got the car stopped, he was informed that he had been disqualified for crossing the center line. There was quite a furor about this ruling because many witnesses claimed it was Snow who crossed the center line. AHRA officials held firm and declared Snow the winner although according to Drag Racing USA, Gene privately gave Tommy the prize money, but not the title. - TN | Car received two-page feature treatment in the 9/72 issue of SS&DI; pictured running 427 Cammer. - RT

Notes: Grove showed up at Beeline with his still unfinished Mustang for the AHRA Winternationals. He ran 6.91/202.24 to qualify #29 in the 32-car field, but an opening round 7.05/196.50 lost to Ed McCulloch's 6.49/220. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he was the eleventh alternate. He also could not qualify for the sixteen-car field at the Bakersfield March Meet, where he ended up as the first alternate. Jim Adolph qualified, but his car broke, and he was unable to run in eliminations, so Grove got into the field. Mert Littlefield shut down early into his run in the opening round, and Tommy advanced with a 7.69. In round two, his 7.56 lost to Dave Uyehara's 7.18 in Larry Huff's car. On April 28, he was a Capitol for an eight-car show that had all the cars run two rounds of racing, with the two Low ET's cars meeting in the final. Grove's 6.56/216 defeated Clare Sanders' quicker 6.54/189 in the "Ramchargers" car in his first race. In his second race, he faced Richard Tharp, who was driving the "Blue Max. Grove's Mustang went into a wheelstand, and he backed out of it while Tharp ran 6.62/195 to win. Grove ran really well at the AHRA Grand American held at Green Valley Raceway in May. It was a sixteen-car show, and Grove made it into the semifinal where Jim Nicoll fouled against him. Unfortunately, Grove hurt some valvetrain parts and repaired them for his final round showdown with Don Prudhomme. Those repairs did not work out as the car failed to fire for the final, and Tom had to watch as the "Snake" made an easy solo for the win. He qualified #12 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, but he damaged his engine and could not compete in eliminations. Near the end of June, he went to US 13, Delmar, for a best-of-three-match race against Shirley Muldowney. He won all three of their races, running a best of 7.09/202.24. In July, he was in New England for a sixteen-car show. The car got out of shape in the first round, and the rear almost hit the guardrail. After he straightened it out, he took off in hot pursuit of Dale Pulde, who was running 7.03/172 in the other lane. Grove lost with an 8.61/202. He came back out later for a consolation race with Fred Goeske. Fred broke in their race, and Grove ran 6.82/207. Grove was at Fremont on October 14 for the AHRA World Championships. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 6.56 qualified #8. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.79 lost to Sush Matsubara's 6.50. Grove ended his '73 season at Beeline for its sixth annual Funny Car Nationals held on December 2. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 6.78/213.76 qualified #4. He improved to 6.68 as just 192.30 in the opening round to beat Roger Garten's 7.28/156 in the "Warhorse." But an even better 6.65/217.38 fell to eventual winner Tom McEwen's 6.53/210 in the second round. Several DNQs at NHRA national events with best times of 6.888/211.76 in qualifying #12 at Columbus. We remember the 6.42/227 but need to validate track and year.

Notes: On August 14, Tommy was at Englishtown for its Race of Champions. His car failed to fire for his race against Gene Snow in the first round. He came back out later for a consolation race where he ran 6.42/228.42 (Top Speed) to beat Billy Meyer. In September, Grove was at Maryland International for a best of three match race against Al Segrini, who was driving the "Black Magic" Vega. Unfortunately, Grove lost two straight. The car went into a wheelstand in the first race, and Tommy shut down. In the second race, his 6.61/224.42 lost to Segrini's 6.57/220. At the Eighth Annual New England Funny Car Nationals, Grove looked like he was on his way to the win over the 32-car field. In the opening round, his 6.45/225 defeated Arnie Swensen's 6.76/201. In round two, he set Top Speed with his 6.33/228.42 beating Tom Prock's 6.86/193 in the "Custom Body" car. The third round saw Grove set a new track record with his 6.31/225 taking out Kosty Ivanof's 6.48. Unfortunately, the run came at a cost as Grove burned a few pistons. He could not return for the semifinal, and Ivanof replaced him in the field. Shortly after that, he was at Englishtown for its Fallnationals. It was an eight-car show, and in round one, the rear end broke on the line against Roger Lindamood. He also raced at the Irwindale Team Funny Car Championships late in October. All cars there were to make three runs, with the two Low ET cars scheduled to mee in the final. Grove did not run quick enough to reach the final. Tommy also ran 6.54 at Englishtown and 6.55/229 at the Epping Grande American event.

Notes: Tommy went back to an SOHC Ford in the Setzer car. Setzer name used only for bookings. Was Grove's deal. | Tommy Grove loved the 427 SOHC Ford motor. Years after he retired from the sport he still wanted to build an SOHC just to see what it could do. For the Ford lovers, it must have been strange seeing him wheeling the Barry Setzer Vega, but in August of '75 he showed up at Englishtown for an eight-car show with the Ford engine between the frame rails. He beat Tom Prock in the first round, of eliminations with a 6.76/215.82, but in the semifinals, he shut down at half-track against Bill Leavitt.
