Notes: Sherm was at Fremont for the NHRA Division 6 Opener in April. He qualified last in the eight-car show with a 6.38/214.79. In the first round, he beat Tom Ridings with a 6.72/215.82 over Riding's shutting off early 7.44/147. In the semifinals, he beat Jim Dunn, but in the final against Ed McCulloch, he had problems and shut down to a 9.95/84.00 that lost to Ed's 6.12/236.

Notes: Sherm debuted his new Camaro at OCIR for the season ending NHRA World Finals on October 16. It was a good debut as Sherm qualified for the first time ever at a NHRA event with a 5.96/243.90 (#15). A 6.04 in the first round, beat Henry Harrison's 6.10, but in round two, another 6.04 lost to John Force's 5.98.

Notes: Beat four "high dollar" cars, messed up the points chase, and won the NHRA World Finals - all in one day. Photo from Indy 1984. | Sherm did not qualify at the NHRA Winters (times not reported). He qualified #14 at Atlanta with a 6.021/241.28 but shut off and lost to Dale Pulde's 5.90 in round one. He next ran at the NHRA Cajun Nationals and qualified #10 at 6.049/240.64. Pulde got him again in round one, but it was closer, 5.92 to 6.27/205. Sherm found the fives at the Springnationals, running 5.989/236.22 to qualify #12. He surprised Kenny Bernstein in round one, 6.14/226, to a 12-second shutoff. Raymond Beadle ended Sherm's day in round two, 5.93 to 6.28/191. Sherm qualified #13 at Brainerd at 6.017/239.36. Mark Oswald got around him in round one, but Sherm was competitive, 5.83/226 to 6.012/241.93. Sherm qualified #15 at Indy with a nice 5.931/250.00, but Bernstein got revenge in round one, 5.91, to Sherm's 10-second shutoff. Sherm's next race was the season-ending NHRA World Finals at Pomona. It was his finest hour. Sherm qualified #11 at 5.898/250.69. He started his day of giant-killing with a first-round 5.959/239.36 to 5.898/249.30 holeshot to defeat Kenny Bernstein by .005 seconds. Round two placed Sherm against legend Don Prudhomme, but Sherm bit the Snake with a consistent 5.980/224.43 as Prudhomme shut off at 11 seconds. Sherm was up against Billy Meyer in the semi-finals. This time, he had to drive around a holeshot as Meyer got out first. But Sherm stayed consistent to win at 5.915/243.90 to Meyer's close 5.991/221.67. In the final, Gunn lined up against yet another monster, Mark Oswald, in the mighty Candies and Hughes Firebird, which had leveraged 5.70s all day. But this was Sherm Gunn's day in the sun, as he ran an even quicker 5.877/248.61 as the C&H car lost a motor and faded to an 11-second shutoff. | Sherm Gunn/Mark Dentler Funny Car took the win. Dentler was the CC of Mike Miller's Mustang II in the late 70s. The 5.89 in late Saturday qualifying beat McEwen's 5.97 to the finish line. ND after-report said Tom Prock was trying different gear ratios in the 'Goose's Coors Corvette. - Joe Moore

Notes: Sherm only ran two NHRA national events in 1988, and he had a tough time at both. At Pomona for the Winters, he was fifth alternate at 6.929/143.03. Notes: The first time out for this car in competition was at Lions on June 28. Gunter debuted the car with 9-second runs at 166. Warren was at OCIR on July 19 for the PDA Championships. His 8.54 qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field. His 8.68 lost to Mike Van Sant's 8.14 in the "Invader in the opening round." The following week, Gunter was at Irwindale for another sixteen car show. In the opening round, he had drivetrain problems and shut off against Danny Ongais. On August 2, Lions held an eight-car show with so many cars they formed two eight-car fields. Warren failed to qualify for the "quick" eight, but he was in the second program. Unfortunately, he blew a transmission in his first-round race against the "Mako Shark." Shortly after that (August 10), the "Durachrome Bug" was at Woodburn's Funny Car Festival. In the opening round, an off-pace 9.47/151.00 lost to Ken Smith's 8.61/174. He also lost in the first round at Irwindale's sixteen car show held on August 16. This time Gas Ronda's 7.54/194 stopped him. At the end of the month, he competed at the Drag News Nationals held at Lions. Gordon Mineo's 8.01/157 put the bug's 8.43/173.74 on the trailer in the first round. Irwindale held an eight-car show on September 1, and Gunter qualified on the "bump" with a 7.91. Tom Sturm's Corvair failed to fire for its opening race against Warren, so he soloed with a 9.36/109.33. In the semifinal, the car got crossed-up, and Gunter's 9.81/91.00 lost to Van Sant's 7.97/187. The photo is of the car at Lions just after getting sponsors. The Don Burns lettering was added to the space in front of the Durachrome name. This chassis was damaged at OCIR, and new chassis was built just before two full seasons on a USA national tour. The second car had darker shadowing along the body lines.

Notes: Warren was at Irwindale on January 1 for its New Year's Day race. He failed to qualify but got into the show when Fred Goeske's Road Runner broke. Unfortunately, the car developed problems in the first round, and opponent Gordon Mineo soloed into the second round. On March 28, Warren was at OCIR for the final All-Pro race. Unfortunately, his first-round 8.01/177.86 lost to eventual winner Dave Beebe's 7.74/157. Gunter was back at OCIR on May 2 for its Big Four Championships. It was not a good outing. Warren stuffed it into the guardrail just past the finish line during qualifying. He was ok, not so much the car. | Very early picture of the first chassis under the original body. C&O TorqueFlite and Chrysler rear end. It was a real handful and ended up along the fence at OCIR, and new chassis was built. The original car weighed less than 1800 lbs. Even with the new lower and stronger chassis, the car still wanted to make a quick "jog" at about half-track. Every run was a surprise. I spent two years on tour back east and will never forget the good times. - Warren Gunter
