Notes: This new photo is the second chassis during the last year of touring. Note that the spoiler on the roof has been removed, and a large aluminum spoiler is now on the rear. I can't remember where this was taken. We ran consistent mid 7's on tour with this set-up. Oh, to be young again. - WG | Gunter was at Beeline Dragway on February 21 for the AHRA Winternationals. It was a 32-car field, and his 7.84 qualified easily. In the first round, he faced Sam Miller but was shut off with a water leak, giving Miller a solo into round two. In July, Gunter went to Numidia Dragway for a best-of-three-match race against Bob Parmer's AA/FA Fiat. Warren caught Bob napping in their first race, and his 7.56/181.08 beat the Fiat's much quicker 7.13/187. Bob won the second race with a 7.69/185 when the VW broke and slowed to 7.95/138.46. Gunter came back in the third race to win the match with a 7.50/185.56, beating Bob's 7.85/173. On August 12, Warren was at Numidia Dragway for a best-of-three-match race against Pete Hill. It wasn't the little VW's day as it lost all three races. Still, Gunter did manage a 7.22/189.86 best. His other runs were 7.62/157.89 and 7.31/186.32. That wasn't far off of Pete's 7.18/203 best. In September, this little bug went all the way to the final at New England's Funny Car Nationals. It was a 32-car field, and Warren beat Frank Oglesby in the opening round and a 7.65 at only 145.16 in round two beat Fred Goeske. He beat Dean LaPole's Chevy-powered "King Camaro" in the third round, and Bob Cain crossed the centerline against him in the semifinals. He went up against "Jungle Jim" Liberman in the final, and the VW went every which way but straight, slowing to a 10.69 runner-up finish to Jim's 6.95. In a December issue of Dag News, the car was offered for sale for $4,500. The ad did not state if the engine was included. |

Notes: Terry was the third alternate at the Gatornationals at 5.448/276.52. He was the first alternate at Englishtown at 5.280/280.66. Terry qualified #15 at Brainerd at 5.312/258.57. He lost to Ron Capps in round one, but it was a great race. Capps put a one tenth of a second holeshot on Terry, but had troubles and barely held him off, 7.42/245 to 7.341/175.05! Terry was a distant DNQ at Indy at 9.212/90.12, and was the third alternate at Maple Grove at 7.542/123.23. That was his final event of the year. Notes: Ray was in Seattle for the Olympia All-Pro Drag Championships in July. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.65, and in the first round, he improved to 6.59/223.88 while beating Mike Lycar. Unfortunately, the run cost him as he hurt some parts and could not run in the semifinals. |

Notes: The Aurora model company based a 1/16 scale kit around this car. The extremely detailed model was well received by hardcore builders, but was a poor seller. These kits are sought after collectors items 35 years later. The car was run on nitro a few times before being converted to alky and Richie Sullivan becoming the driver. |

Notes: At the Bakersfield March Meet, he failed to qualify, but got in as an alternate when Fred Goeske broke. A first-round 9.06/165 lost to Rich Siroonian's 8.50/181. He ran an eight-car show at Lions on March 22. An 8.08 qualified seventh in the field, which was good considering 14 other cars failed to qualify. But once again, an off pace 9.35/129.68 lost in the first round, to Steve Bovan's 8.14/172. On April 13, an 8.17 qualified last at an eight-car show at Irwindale. An off pace 9.20/142.18 lost to Steve Bovan's 8.12/181 in the first round. Leroy lost to Johnny Wright in the first round, at an eight-car show at Irwindale on May 30. He ran an 8.06 in qualify #12 at OCIR on May 31 for the Funny Car 500. An 8.45/184.42 beat a crossed up Mike Van Sant in the first round, but a 7.81/187 by Randy Walls beat his 8.33/184.04 in round two. On June 28, Leroy ran 7.94 to qualify #4 at an eight-car show at Lions. He was upset by alternate Bob Walker's 8.35/177 in the first round, that beat his quicker 8.16/181.81. He just made the field on July 5 at OCIR's Nitro Championships, qualifying #15. Gas Ronda put him out in the first round, with an 8.07/186 that beat the New Breed's 8.58/184.80. The following week, on July 12, he broke while doing his burnout for the first-round at Irwindale's Race with a Reason. On August 16, he raced at a sixteen-car show at Irwindale. He ran a great 7.80/178.92 in the first round, but Frank Pisano ran an ever better 7.65/187 in the other lane to beat him. |

Notes: Former Keaton Cougar with 392 power. Ran mid to low 7s. Leroy was at Irwindale for an eight-car show on April 4. A first-round 8.64/136.15 beat Andy Clary's out of shape 'Cuda. Unfortunately, he lost oil pressure in the semifinals and shut off, advancing Dave Beebe into the final. He returned to Irwindale on May 23 for the NHRA Division 7 race. In the opening round of eliminations, his 8.12/182.18 lost to eventual winner Mike Snively's 7.51/192. OCIR held its annual Funny Car 500 on May 30, and Leroy qualified for the sixteen-car field. A first-round 8.27/127.11 advanced when Jack Chrisman lost a blower belt. In round two, he ran 8.48/192.30 to get around Wendell Shipman's tire-smoking 8.69/172 pass. He picked it up to a 7.81/193.13 to beat Ray Alley's out-of-shape 7.90/191. In the final, he faced Snively in Jim Annin's Challenger. The Cougar broke, and Snively soloed for the victory. On June 13, he was at Lions for an All-American series race. He failed to qualify for the low eight Funny Car program, but Lions held a second eight-car field for the cars that failed to qualify. Leroy soloed to an 8.98/115.97 win in the first round when Don Cook's Corvette broke, but unfortunately, he also broke and could not run in the semifinals. Leroy was back at Irwindale for a sixteen-car show on July 17. He qualified #3 with a 7.88/173.74 and beat Larry Fullerton's 8.03 in the first round, with a 7.80, but the Cougar broke, and Fullerton got back in on the "break rule" in round two. On August 22, Leroy was at Lions for an eight-car show. In the opening round, he lost to Beebe, but he came back out for a consolation race against Johnny Wright. Johnny shut down in their race, and the "Wild Breed" won with a 7.43/189.07. |
