Notes: This car also had a long history. After Schroeder ran it in 68, it went to Art Whipple in 69, McCulloch's first FC. Then in 1970, Jerry Ruth bought it, and Frank Hall drove it. Then in 71, Harlan Thompson bought it and crashed it. | “This is my first Funny Car; it was a [Dick] Fletcher car that I bought from Whipple & McCulloch. It had a Chevy in it but I put a Chrysler in it, one of the engines out of my dragster. It’s also the first car that Frank Hall drove for me. It had a [Torqueflite] 727 transmission in it, but they burned up three transmissions the first week. I walked in the shop and it smelled like someone had burned bacon. I told them to throw the things away and make it high-gear-only. They changed it over, drove 550 miles to Boise, Idaho, and won the race.rnrn“I was a dragster guy, but Funny Cars were in big demand. I made my living at this, and it could be a good living, I made $255,000 one year in the ‘70s. That was a lot of money back then.”. (Info from Phil Burgess, NHRA.com interview with Jerry Ruth). JM |

Notes: Frank's first event this year was Indy, where he was the seventh alternate at 6.57/227.84. At the NHRA World Finals in Amarillo, Texas, Frank ran well. He started that race by qualifying #2 for the West at 6.67 and then ran 7.10/142.63 in round one when Joe Jacono did not show. In round two, Al Bergler broke against him, and Frank claimed a 6.72/207.85 victory. He improved to 6.42/225.56 in the semis to beat Shirl Greer's 6.64. He became the 1973 NHRA World Champion by running a 6.39/224.43 to beat Bobby Rowe's 6.38/228.42 on a holeshot. Frank qualified #7 at the Ontario SUpernationals at 6.441/223.32. He beat Billy Meyer in round one at 6.48/219.51 when Meyer lost fire. In round two, his otherwise excellent 6.37/224.43 lost to Dale Emery's killer 6.28/229.59. Where did Frank run 6.29/228.42? Notes: Qualified first at the AHRA Winternationals with Low ET of the meet, a 6.34/225. Unfortunately, he met a poorly qualified Don Prudhomme in the first round and lost a 6.47/211 to 6.53/222.00 race. He did much better at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified third with a 6.43/223.88 and beat a tire-smoking Gene Snow in the first round with a 6.44/221.67. In round two, a 6.39/217.91 beat Ed McCulloch's 6.63/203. A 6.43/217.39 dispatched John Collins' 6.76/168 in the semis. But against Dale Emery in the final, he broke. |

Notes: Frank was driving this car at the NHRA Division 6 Opener at Bremerton. He did well, beating his old ride, Jim Green's "Green Elephant," now driven by Mike Miller. His 6.78/220.58 got the victory when Miller broke in the final. Earlier, Hall set Top Speed at 225.00. He then went to Seattle for the Northwest Open. A first-round 6.85/203.14 beat Twig Zeigler, but he broke on the run and could not return for the semifinals. Spokane hosted the AHRA Springnationals early in June, and Frank lost to Danny Ongais in the opening round. At the second NHRA Division 6 race at Mission Raceway in B.C., Hall broke in the semifinals, but he did manage to set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.55/223.32. He did win the third Division 6 race held at Edmonton. There a final round 6.41/225.00 beat Miller's 6.58/195. Frank was the first alternate at NHRA Indy with a 6.531/226.13. He was the second alternate at Ontario Motor Speedway for the NHRA World Finals with a 6.56/177.86. |

Notes: Frank was driving Bill Spevacek's car at the Portland Grand Premiere race in April. His only pass was an 8.08 that beat Johnny White's 8.46 in the "Oly Smoker." In June, Hall was at Saskatoon for a best-of-three match race against Mike Miller in the "Green Elephant." It was not Frank's day as he lost the match and could only run a best of 7.36/195. |

Notes: Photo from Pomona 1982, the last national event for the car. The team qualified #15 at 6.150/238.72, but lost in round one, to Tripp Shumake, 6.14/243 to 6.514/204.54. Car used to be the Flo-Rite deal, but we lost that sponsor cause Bonin and Smith who ran Flo-Rite were buddies and when Bonin was fired, guess what? Ron Hodgson bought the Yukon brewery in Prince George, BC. One week before Pomona we didn't have a sponsor, so Ron gave us $5000 to go. Gary Egbert got it lettered by the day before we left. When Frank and I got to the track, I was still cleaning off the pencil lines from the lettering. - Leon Lippoldt |

Notes: Tommy was driving Gary Richard's Mustang at Maple Grove for an eight-car show in May. His first-round race was very strange. He faced Tim Kushi, and the Mustang lost fire while doing his pre-race burnout. His crew hurried to his aid and refired the car, but Kushi's motor was overheating all this time. The two finally got staged and raced, with Hall's 7.27/197.28 getting the "win" light. But due to his getting burnt down on the line. Tim was reinstated into the semifinal. |

Notes: Finished 6th in Div 5 points. Doc ran 6.86/199.11 at the NHRA Amarillo World Finals. That won first-round over Al Marshall, who hit the guard rail, but he did not race in round two for some reason. That was the only NHRA national event for the team. Also 7.05 at Donnybrooke in 7/72. |

Notes: Halladay was at St. Paul, Minnesota, for a best-of-three-match race against "Flash Gordon" Mineo. In their first race, his 7.00/189.87 lost to Mineo's 6.93/207. In the second race, Doc was late of the line, and his 6.77/209.79 lost to the Vega's 6.90/211. Things did not go well in the final race either as the Pinto broke a fuel pump, and Mineo made a solo run to win the match. Doc set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.96 at the NHRA Divisional race at Cornhusker Raceway in July. He soloed in the first round, but he smoked the tires in the semifinals and shut off to a 10.00/124.65 that lost to eventual winner Don Cain's 7.22/210. Also ran 6.87 at NHRA D5 Omaha NE. |

Notes: Halladay was at Cordova for its World Series of Drag Racing event in August. The race was a two-day affair, and he wasn't there on Friday. He showed up on Saturday. All cars were to make two runs, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. His 7.07/223.93 beat a wheelstanding "Jungle Jim" Liberman in his first race. In the second race, he ran 6.71/231.69 over a troubled Bob Pickett in the M/T Grand Am. His ETs were not good enough to advance into the final.
