Notes: Doc qualified #14 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.190/235.60. He lost to Roy Harris in the first round, 6.20/238 to 6.36/230.17. That was Doc's only NHRA national event. At Martin, MI, for the PHR race, Doc did not qualify with a 6.54. We need to confirm the 6.05. Former Super Shops car, purchased from Tom Hoover.

Notes: Former Super Shops car. Doc purchased the car from Tom Hoover after the AHRA Winternats. He qualified #14 at Pomona at 6.123/231.95, and then really came alive on race day. He shocked Craig Epperly in round one, 6.024/238.72 to 6.30/240. In round two, he took out Billy Meyer, 6.104/234.98 to 6.18/238. Eventual winner Al Segrini got to Doc in the semis, however, 6.21/239 to 7.927/199.55. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Doc was the fourth alternate at 6.227/233.16. That was his last NHRA national event of the year.

Notes: Halladay started the '84 season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify for the eight-car field. Later in the season, he was at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. It was another eight-car show, and his 6.26/235 qualified on the "bump." He lost early in eliminations. Doc then ran his one NHRA event of the season, Brainerd. He qualified #15 at 6.047/243.24. Doc lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.90/241 in round one, despite improving to 6.037/246.57.

Notes: Photo from Milan, MI, 1986. Doc qualified #8 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.65/255.31. Unfortunately, he got out of shape against Tim Grose in the first round and crossed the centerline. Halladay qualified well at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, but he lost in round one. He raised some eyebrows at Gainesville, where he laid down a 5.649/254.59 to qualify #5 for the NHRA Gatornationals. To put that into perspective, he qualified ahead of names such as Don Prudhomme, Billy Meyer, Tom McEwen, and John Force. He beat John Martin in the opening round with a 5.81/223.93, but in round two, he slipped to a 5.95/241.28 that lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.59/263. In April, he was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he qualified #11 with a 5.83/245.76. He faced Ed McCulloch in the first round, and Ed smoked the tires. It looked as though Halladay would win easily, but then he broke and blower belt. Ed's 6.01/252 came past to win over Doc's 6.17/186.37. Shortly after that, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Nationals. It was an eight-car show, and in the first round, his 6.01/240.64 beat Steve Hodkinson. He lost to eventual winner Bernstein in the semifinals. Tulsa held its yearly independent Spring race, and Doc qualified #1 for the eight-car show with a 5.89 (Low ET) at 241.28. Once again, he beat Hodkinson in the opening round, this time with a 6.22/200.89. But in the semifinals, Darrell Amberson stepped up to run a career-best 5.93/245 to beat Halladay's 6.14/238.09. His next stop was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #3 for the eight-car field and defeated Amberson in round one. He lost in the semifinal to eventual winner Mike Dunn who was driving Joe Pisano's car. He won the Union Grove Olympics of Drag Racing event, stopping Mike Edstrom in the final. Doc earlier had set Low ET with a 5.79. It was then off to Atco for the IHRA Summernationals. Doc had qualified for every IHRA race of the season, and his 5.66 easily made the show. He then beat Pat Walsh with a 5.74/252.10 in the first round before smoking the tires in the semifinal and losing to Mark Oswald. He moved up to second in the IHRA Funny Car points chase behind Oswald with the semifinal finish. He competed at Brainerd for the Crown FC Championships, and while he failed to reach the final, he did run some good times, such as 5.90/251.39 in beating McEwen.

Notes: Doc did not have a good weekend on March 20 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field with a 5.817/252.03, but the car went into heavy tire shake in the opening round of eliminations. That caused the body to shake and jam the throttle open in his race against Scott Kalitta. Halladay rode the centerline and knocked out the top-end photocells before enough air got under the body to rip in off the chassis. He ran a low gear only 6.54/212 and was unhurt except for his pocketbook. Halladay qualified #13 at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals with a 5.741/249.51. He lost to Don Prudhomme in the first round, 5.47/263 to 5.825/270.77. Shortly after that, he was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. There, his 5.77/248.62 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. Doc qualified #14 at the Houston Supernationals at 5.633/249.44. He lost to Prudhomme again in round one, 5.30/267 to 5.719/247.11. That was Doc's last NHRA national event of the year. Confirmed 5.633 at Houston Fall '88 and 252.03 from Gainesville '88. Where was the 5.53 at 267 run? | Halladay turned a 5.87/240.0 while winning the Funny Car title at the 1988 Olympics of Drag Racing (Union Grove, Wis.) He held both ends of the track record (with better times) at the time. - RT | Photo from Milan, Mich., 1988.

Notes: Mike's Charger used a 118" chassis from Woody Gilmore's Race Car Engineering. It cost him $18,000 to build. Mike failed to qualify for the sixteen-car field at Irwindale for its Grand Premiere race. He did better at the second All-Pro race at OCIR, where his 6.93 qualified #7 in the eight-car field. But in the first round, he shut down to a 12.83/65.35 loss to Jim Paoli, who advanced with a 6.86/201. His next good showing came at the third OCIR All-Pro, where he ran 6.79 to qualify #4 in the eight-car show. An opening round 7.24/141.28 beat Russell Long's troubled 13.87 in the "Pabst" Charger. But Halloran hurt his engine on the run and could not return for the semifinal. He competed at an eight-car show at OCIR on March 10. His 7.13 qualified on the "bump," In round one, he shut down to a 13.72/57.39 loss against eventual winner Roger Garten's 7.01/211 in the "Warhorse." Mike qualified #15 at the final OCIR All-Pro race. His 7.17/175.09 beat Jim Adolph in the "Rat Trap" in the opening round of eliminations. He killed it early against Sush Matsubara in round two, who advanced at 7.49. Irwindale held its big 32-car Coca-Cola Championships on April 21; Halloran was there. Unfortunately, his first-round 7.52/138.24 fell to Tom McEwen's 6.67/217. He was at Irwindale in September for its Back to School Championships. An opening round 6.97/197.36 beat Charlie Wilson, and in round two, his 7.09/209.30 beat a badly out-of-shape Rick Ramsey driving the "Keeling and Clayton" Pinto. But in the semifinals, Halloran slowed to 7.49/175.09 in a loss to Gerry Glenn's 7.03/201. - Ron Howard

Notes: Mike was at Sacramento on June 22 for the second NHRA Division 7 race. He qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field with a 6.76. But he had problems and was unable to race, so Mert Littlefield replaced him in the show. Times and info from National Dragster, 8/23/74. Grand Prix, Irwindale CA 8/74.
