Notes: A new ‘Eastern Raider’ Pinto was built. This was a Lindblad chassis and featured an injected nitro motor. This machine ran in the 7’s as well. Featured in ‘East Coast’ Nitro F/C Circuit. - per hannamotorsportsjets.com | 7.95 listed, but we need the exact ET and mph for this year. |

Notes: This car made its debut at the 1972 NHRA Nationals were it qualified fourteenth with a 6.617/217.39. There were several magazine articles on this car and the March 1973 issue of Drag Racing USA states that the best recorded ET and speed for this car was a 6.50/224.50. At the 1972 OCIR Manufacturers Meet Al qualified for the Ford team and won all three of his races that evening. He and Billy Meyer were the only members of the Ford team that won all of their races, these wins insured that Ford won the "Manufacturers" team title. - DH | Featured in the 2/73 issue of Hi-Performance Cars. - RT | OCIR Mfg. Meet 6.76 over Frank Rupert shown on the movie Funny Car Summer. |

Notes: Al was at Miami-Hollywood in February for its Winter Funny Car Championships. He beat Pete Miner in the "Gold Coast" Duster in the first round, with a 7.06/198.72, but he failed to get into the staging lanes on time in the semifinals and was replaced by Al Marshall. He was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, but his 7.05 best failed to qualify for the field. In April, Hanna was at Atco for an eight-car show. In the first round, his 7.55/154.37 beat Tom Hall's motor-blowing car. But he lost to eventual winner Tom Prock in the semifinals when his car lost power and his coasting 14.33/53.53 lost to Prock's also coasting 8.78/150 when something also broke on the "Custom Body" car. Shortly after that, he was at Suffolk for an eight-car show. In the opening round, he lost to Harlan Thompson. The "Eastern Raider's" next stop was at Cecil on April 15 for its National Open. It was another eight-car show, and Al's 7.17 qualified on the "bump." He improved to 7.09 in round one, but it wasn't good enough to beat Pee Wee Wallace's 6.94. On May 6, the "Eastern Raider" was at Englishtown for the NHRA Division 1 opener. Al's off-pace 7.70/192.38 lost to Tom Prock's 6.96/204 in the first round. The following weekend (May 13), he was at National Trail for the second NHRA Division 3 race, but he failed to qualify for the eight-car field. In June, Hanna was at New England Dragway for its Spring Funny Car Championships. It was a sixteen-car show, and in the first round, Al's 6.89/207 beat Lew Arrington's 7.03/209 in the "Brutus" Mustang. But a round two 7.26/187 fell to Bobby Rowe's 6.59/205 in one of Don Schumacher's 'Cuda's. Shortly after that, the team was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Hanna survived the first-round easily, and in round two, he beat the "Boston Shaker." He came up against Ron Colson, who was driving the "Chi-Town Hustler" in the semifinal and the little Pinto lost oil pressure, and Al had to shut off and watch as Colson soloed into the final. Al's first major funny car crash occurred at Maple Grove. It was for the "All-American Funny Car Championships" on July 25. Al had beaten Larry Fullerton in the first round, with a 6.86/199.55. But the car caught fire and burned pretty bad. The Pinto was a write-off, but Hanna was unhurt. |

Notes: Al was at Bristol on June 22 for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field with a 6.86, but he lost to Norm Wilcox, who was driving the "Hawaiian,” in the first round. Shortly after that, he was at New England for a race and while he didn't reach the finals, he did run a best of 6.69/207. Al qualified 14th at the 1975 NHRA Summernationals (Englishtown) with a 6.57/213.77 pass. But he was unable to run eliminations and first alternate Al Segrini took his place in the field. Notes: Al crashed and burned this Pinto at Gainesville and refitted a Mustang II shell to finish out the season. Al was at Atco Dragway in May for a Coca-Cola Cavalcade race. In the first round, his 6.69/218.44 beat Dale Creasy's 7.13/203 in the "Tyrant." In the semi-final, the Mustang II broke on the line against Tripp Shumake. In June, he was at Cecil County for another Coca-Cola race. His 6.87/194 in the first round beat Creasy, but he lost to Shumake in the semi-final. |

Notes: Al qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field at Sanair for the NHRA Grandnationals with a 6.63/215.31. He picked up to 6.47/222 in the first round, but it was not enough to get past Billy Meyer's quick-leaving 6.54/205. That was their only NHRA national event this year. Hanna and Gary Richards were partners on this car, which was housed and raced out of Division 1. |

Notes: After building a new "first of its kind" funny car, it was named NHRA New England Division's most beautiful car. The new car had consistent times in the 6.1's and a best of 6.06. Al failed to qualify at the Gatornationals. He also attempted to qualify at the NHRA Summernationals, but a best of 6.40/229 was good for the fourth alternate. He was in Canada on August 9 for the NHRA Grandnationals. It was an eight-car show, and he qualified #5 with a 6.42/225.56. In the first round, he ran low qualifier Tim Grose and Hanna's 6.47 lost to Grose's 6.18. He was in New England on August 17 for the NHRA Division 1 final. Al qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 6.13/229.59, and in the first round, his 6.17/227.84 beat Al Segrini's 6.24/229. He lost to eventual winner Gary Burgin in the semifinals when he got out of shape and crossed the centerline. He was back in New England in October for its FC Nationals. Al's 6.38/228.42 in the opening round beat Al Hofmann. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1982. |

Notes: Al ran 6.44/230.76 at East Haddam, CT, in June. He attempted to qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He ended up as the fourth alternate with a 6.254/230.17 best. That was his only NHRA national event this year. Al later wrecked the car at NED, rebuilt it in 8 days, and returned to NED to reset the track record. The race car, truck, and trailer were stolen one week later. Al turned to jets (although he ran nitro in 1982, too). |

Notes: Vega originally started as an AA/FA. It is a Lindblad chassis. He stretched the frame and we made longer brackets for the rearend mount. It had a 392. We were helped on the engine build by King and Marshall. D+D performance helped as the sponsor. It was the shortest car in the country at 101 in long. - Paul Miller |
