Notes: Real Style Camaro, Left Hand Drive, Vinyl Top. Dick ran 7.83 at 184.80 at the 1968 All American Funny Car Championships in Bristol. We need to confirm that those times were run in this car and not the Courtesy Chevrolet car (that I think ran this year, too). Former times listed for the Yenko car in 1968 were 7.945 at 171.80. |

Notes: Dated photos confirm this car ran under the banner of "Fred Gibb Super Camaro Dealers" in the summer of '69. 7.37 Green Valley ick Harrell was the model drag racer of the 1960s. His race cars were immaculate his car haulers were kept clean, and Harrell's interaction with sponsors and fans was second to none. Known as "Mr. Chevrolet," Harrell was one the most successful racers in AHRA drag racing history. Dick raced a series of stockers, super stockers, and factory experimentals until reaching the funny car ranks. Many felt his best funny car was the Fred Gibb-sponsored 1969 Camaro. Don Hardy built the car in his Floydada, Texas, shop. The Camaro featured a 427 Chevrolet Rat for power backed by an automatic transmission. The car won many match races during 1969, running a best of 7.35 at 200 mph plus. Info provided by James Ibusuki. - BS | On February 16, Harrell ran 7.81 for the Miami-Hollywood track record. Also ran 7.58 at Bristol. - Ron Howard |

Notes: Dick Harrell was known as Mr. Chevrolet, sticking with the brand long after the rest of the top Chevy-bodied teams had gone to 426 elephant power. From www.dickharrell.com: "Dick even entered a full season of competition knowing he couldn't win any big meets when he stuck with Chevrolet power in 1970 simply because he felt his fans expected him to remain loyal." The popular racer was forced to switch to a Hemi in 1971 to remain competitive, but his fan base did not abandon him. - RT | Dick's new Camaro for '70 was 300 lbs. lighter than his '69 car. The body alone was 100 lbs. lighter, and it only weighed 1,980 lbs. He continued to run the Chevy engine. The heads were from Mondello and used 2.20-inch intakes and 1.90 exhaust valves. He used Venolia pistons and Howard's rods as well as camshaft. A Cragar manifold rested a Don Hampton-built blower that was overdriven between 24 to 27%. At high altitude tracks, it went as high as 34%. An Enderle injection was used up top. Dick used a B&M-built Turbohydro automatic transmission, and it was claimed to be able to last between 70-80 runs. He had used a Pontiac rear end in his '69 car, but for '70, he switched to a Mopar unit with 3.90 gears. On May 17, he was at Frontier International for the fourth AHRA Grand American race. He blew a transmission during qualifying and had to swap out a new one. But after all that work, the car's ailing 8.23/176.12 in the opening round loss to Jay Howell's 7.82/170. His next stop was at Detroit for the next AHRA Grand American. Unfortunately, he also lost early there. Harrell ran pretty well at Bristol for the AHRA Springnationals. His first-round 7.60/176.41 advanced when Tommy Smith broke. In the second round, his 7.64/176.47 upset Tom McEwen's 7.79/171. He was to face Fritz Callier in the semifinals, but the Camaro lost fire, and Dick could only watch as Callier soloed into the final with a 9.10. LaPlace held a Top Fuel vs. Funny Car race that saw the FC's get a half-second handicap. In the first round, he ran 7.69 to beat a fouling Richard Tharp. Dick lost a transmission in his second race and slowed to a 12.10 while losing to Ronnie Martin's 7.22. In the last race, a troubled 10.55 lost to Preston Davis' 7.09. Harrell raced at Green Valley Raceway for AHRA's Labor Day Weekend race. He beat Art Ward in the first round, with a 7.73, and a 7.70 in the second round beat Bill Rogers. In the semifinals, he came up against Jake Johnston, driving the "Blue Max." Dick tried hard, but his 7.58/192.70 was no match for Jake's 7.07/191. |

Notes: Dick Harrell, known to his many fans as Mr. Chevrolet, was forced to abandon his trusty semi-hemi and adopt Chrysler elephant power for his final season. He had stayed with Chevy through 1970, knowing he would not be able to win any major meets, just because he thought his fans expected brand loyalty. In the short 1971 season that followed, that turned out not to be a problem. The fans stayed with him. Harrell was killed on September 12/1971, on a strip in Toronto, Ontario, when a lightweight front tire came apart at over 200 mph, sending him into a utility pole. Just two days earlier at US 30 Dragstrip (Gary, IN), he had participated in a benefit race to defray hospital bills for racer Larry Reyes, who was himself seriously injured in an earlier crash caused by the failure of a front tire. - RT | In July at Deer Park, Harrell set a 6.95 track record. - Ron Howard |

Notes: Coming off some successful years in gassers with multiple wins and records in BB/GS, this was Holt's first Alabamian funny car. Holt, who passed away in October 2007, recounted in an online post that this Logghe-chassis car was built in 1970 and burned at Gainesville, Fla., later that year. - RT |

Notes: Roy was at Epping for a best-of-three match race against Kosty Ivanof's "Boston Shaker" in May. In their first race, Kosty won over Roy's 7.28/178. Harris broke on the pass and was unable to run for the rest of the day, so Fred Bickford filled in for him. https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/vintage-drag-racing-photo-negative-1802642109 |

Notes: Roy lost the Mustang shell in a fire at Epping. | He debuted this car in May at Maple Grove for the Dutch Classic. While he didn't run in the competition, he made a 6.71/205.01 pass. On May 23, he was at Atco for the CARS Magazine meet. Unfortunately, he had a bad fire on the line in the opening round of the competition. ET & mph Dutch Classic, Maple Grove PA 5/76 |

Notes: Harris debuted his new Mustang II at Englishtown's Funny Car Race of Champions on August 4. His first full power run with the car was 6.84. In the first round, he improved to 6.64/219 to win over Ron Leaf who broke. Unfortunately, Roy broke and was unable to run the second round. The second time out for the car was on August 21 at New England for the NHRA Division 1 race. Roy set Low ET and Top Speed in the final while beating Jimmy King's 6.60/215 for the victory. |
