Notes: Did not NHRA in 1978. Where did Roy run the 6.20/227. Was that 1978 or 1979? | Roy was at Englishtown on May 7 for the NHRA Division 1 opener. In the first round of eliminations, his 6.63/203.33 lost to Bruce Larson's 6.50/220. He was at Cayuga for the next Division 1 race on May 21, but in the first round, both he and his opponent, Ron Colson driving the Hawaiian" broke, and they were both out of further competition. In June, he was back at Englishtown for the Crazy Eddie Night of Thrills race. In his first race, Dodger Glenn's 6.63/209 beat his 6.69/207.81, and in his second race, he got out of shape and shut off to 9.63 in a loss to Tommy Ivo's 6.35. |

Notes: Roy ran a career-best (up to this point) 6.130 at 237.46 to qualify #2 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires and lost to Tom McEwen in the opening round of competition. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals where he ran 6.31/230.76 to qualify #7 in the eight-car field. Harris' first-round 6.35 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.12. At the fourth NHRA Division 1 race at Maple Grove, Harris reached the final against Al Segrini, but had problems and shut down to 9.50-78.12 for the runner-up spot. He earlier had set Top Speed at 229.00. Roy was back at Maple Grove for the "Jungle Jim" Memorial Funny Car Championships. In the first round, his 6.37/214.28 lost to Tom Prock's 6.35/217. His next stop was at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open Championships. There, he finished runner-up to Kenny Bernstein. Indy didn't go the greatest for Harris as his best of 6.21/239.36 left him as the fifth alternate for the NHRA US Nationals. The 6.130/239.36 were his NHRA national event best times for 1979. Where did Roy run 6.03/241.93? |

Notes: Roy started the '80 season by qualifying #6 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.11/240.64. He beat Doc Halladay in the first round, with a 6.13. In the second round, he lost to Kenny Bernstein. His next stop was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. Roy qualified well with a 6.12, but he lost in the first round. He continued to run well at the NHRA Gatornationals, where he ran 6.14 to qualify #9. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Don Prudhomme. Roy ran a good 6.19/231.95 in that race, but he lost to the "Snake's" even better 6.12/235. Roy won the Spring All-Pro race at Maple Grove in May over an eight-car field. In the first round, R.C. Sherman lost fire against him and his 6.35/230.76 advanced. In the semifinals, he set Low ET and a new track speed record with a 6.12/241.93 that beat Al Bergler's 6.41/219. The final saw a 6.41/229.59 wrap up the win over Bob Seifert's 6.53/200. At the NHRA Division 1 Opener at Englishtown on May 4, Roy qualified #2 with a 6.14/241.28 (Top Speed) in his Arrow. In the first round, he lost to Al Hofmann when he crossed the centerline. He was runner-up to Dale Pulde at the Jungle Jim Memorial race at Maple Grove. He won his first-round race over Bruce Larson with a strong 6.13/233.76 (Low ET and Top Speed). On May 18, he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals where he ran 6.22 to qualify #4 in the eight-car show. He beat Paul Smith's 6.37 in the first round, with a 6.30 and in the semifinals, a 6.44 advanced when Rick Johnson broke in the "Custom Body" Mustang. In the final, he met up with Billy Meyer and Roy's off pace 6.53/226.12 had to settle for the runner-up spot against Billy's 6.20/234. At Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals in June, Harris qualified on the "bump" with a 6.27/236.22. He lost to Tom Hoover in the first round. In the thin air of Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, he qualified #5 with a 6.36. Unfortunately, a first-round 6.66/198.67 lost to Meyer's 6.35/225. He was not among the qualifiers at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals and the following week (July 20), his 6.32 best failed to qualify at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Things went better at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals where Harris qualified #3 with a 6.37/236.84. An opening round 6.30/236.84 (Top Speed) beat a tire-smoking Kenny Bernstein, but in the semifinals he went up in smoke and shut off to 14.40 in a loss to Meyer's 6.21. At Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships, Roy qualified #4 in the eight-car show with a 6.26/228.42. But another 6.26 in the first round, lost to Meyer's 6.12. The following week (August 17), he was at New England for the NHRA Division 1 final. Once again, he qualified #4 with a 6.19/236.84. He was upset in the first round, when John Speelman picked up to 6.30/223 to beat his 6.36/231.95. At the end of August he debuted a new Omni. |

Notes: Maple Grove held its Jungle Jim Memorial race on May 9, and Roy ran well. It was an eight-car field, and in round one, Roy's 6.34/234.98 (Top Speed) beat Dale Pulde's 6.50/205. He slowed to a 6.69/208.81 loss in the semifinals to Rick Johnson's 6.39/217 in the "Custom Body" car. On May 17, Roy was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #2 with a 6.06/232.55 behind Raymond Beadle's history-making 5.99 (first IHRA 5-second Funny Car time) in the "Blue Max." Unfortunately, Harris smoked the tires in the first round and lost to Billy Meyer. Englishtown held a Thursday night show that had ten cars competing. All made two runs, with the two Low ET cars going into the final. Harris ran well but was not quite good enough to reach the finals. In his first race, he beat John Speelman with a 6.26/229.51, and an even better 6.23/231.36 beat Gary Burgin in his second race. He was back at Maple Grove for the US Funny Car Nationals in June. Eight cars were competing, with all eight making two runs. The two lowest ETs would meet in the final. Roy ran 6.23/234.37 and 6.11/237.46 to qualify for the final. He would face Burgin, who made it with a 6.05 best. It was a close final round race, with Harris' quicker 6.13/234.98 losing to Burgin's 6.14/235. At the NHRA Springnationals, a 6.21/231.36 qualified #7. He defeated Pulde's 6.26/234 in round one with a 6.23/233.16. A round two 6.32/235.60 lost to Tom Hoover's 6.17/224. He qualified #14 at the NHRA Summernationals with a 6.20/234.98, but he smoked the tires and shut off to 17.70/52.75 in a first-round loss to Mike Dunn's 6.04/241 in the "Hawaiian." | At the 1981 New England Spring Funny Car Nationals, if memory serves, Roy had the car really thumping this day, running as quick as 6.12. - James Morgan |

Notes: Harris started the year in his Omni. Burned the paint off it at a March match race at Englishtown. Repainted it as the Brutus and then completely destroyed the car at Maple Grove. He replaced it with the old Arrow and raised funds by swapping his Chaparral fifth wheel with Bruce Larson for the old USA-1 ramp truck. Roy competed at Englishtown's Crazy Eddie Night of Thrills race. While he didn't reach the final, he made a few good runs, such as a 6.40/234.38 over Bruce Larson. He was back at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where he was the third alternate with a 6.420/233.76. Another race held at Englishtown was its FC Race of Champions event held in August. In the opening round, Harris's 6.65/220.58 lost to Larson's 6.37/226. He also lost in the first round at Rockingham for the IHRA U.S. Open Championships, where he lost to Paul Smith. Notes: Kase & Harris leased this car from the Young Brothers. The team started the season at Ontario Motor Speedway for the New Year's Day race. It was an eight-car show, and in the first round, Harris made an easy pass to advance as Leon Cain failed to fire. In the semifinals, Steve crossed the centerline while running 6.72 in a loss to Bryan Raines' 7.25. At the Irwindale Grand Premier race, a 6.76 qualified #11. Once again, he had an easy first-round race as this time Dennis Geisler failed to fire. Harris advanced with a 7.63. In round two, his 6.47/222 beat Gary Burgin's 6.67/207. He improved to 6.38/227 in the semifinals to beat Tom McEwen's quicker 6.35/228. Unfortunately, he fouled against Bob Pickett in the final. He needed to take the shot as he ran 6.88/209.56 for the runner-up spot, while Pickett got the victory with a 6.56 at a shut-off 159. Traction was marginal at best at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. Harris qualified #14, but lost to the eventual winner,r Mike Van Sant, in the opening round. Steve qualified #6 at Beeline for NHRA's Phoenix Winter Classic with a 6.50/205.94. An opening round 6.60/215.82 beat Chris Lane's 6.74/217. In round two, he faced Don Prudhomme, but the "Blackhawk" broke on the burnout. |

Notes: This was the trick titanium chassis built by Woody Gilmore. The Vega body went on in 1972. Henry was driving Mickey Thompson's Vega at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He lost to Ed McCulloch early while Dale Pulde drove Thompson's Pinto to victory over Pat Foster in the final. At the Lions Grand Premiere race, he lost to Frank Rupert in the first round, with a 6.99/215.82 to Rupert's 6.93/166. Henry was the third alternate at NHRA Pomona at 7.342/201.79. On March 12, he was at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. Henry qualified with a 6.81; then, he advanced past the first-round with a 6.80 when Don Schumacher broke. In the second round, a 6.76/218.97 beat McCulloch, who got out of shape and had to lift. He beat Jim Murphy to move into the final against Leroy Goldstein in the "Candies and Hughes" car in the semifinals. Unfortunately for Harrison, the Vega broke, and Goldstein got the victory with a solo 6.54/219. Pomona was Henry's last NHRA national event this year. |

Notes: Henry started his season at the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified eleventh with a 6.51, but a first-round 6.65/201.34 failed to get past Sush Matsubara's 6.46/211. Harrison was at Fresno Dragway in March for its Race of Champions event. It was an eight-car show, and his 6.88 qualified #7. In the opening round of eliminations, his off-pace 7.21/181 lost to Twig Zeigler's 6.50/220. |

Notes: Former Candies & Hughes car. Harrison was at OCIR in mid-March for the AHRA Grand America West race. Unfortunately, his troubled 7.85 in the opening round lost to Jim Dunn's 6.71. Henry was back at OCIR in July for the PDA Championships. It was a twelve-car show with all cars running two rounds and the two lowest ET cars advancing into the final. Harrison soloed with a 7.09/142.40 in his first race when Bryan Raines shut off on the line, and in his second race, an off pace 7.74/181.81 lost to Billy Meyer's 6.66/182. Henry made his traditional appearance at the NHRA World Finals but did not qualify (times not reported). |
