Notes: At the Bakersfield March Meet, Harrison lost to the eventual winner Eddie Pauling, in the opening round of eliminations. He was at OCIR for a sixteen-car show in March. While he didn't reach the final, he did run a best of 6.36. He ran one NHRA national event, the finals at Ontario. He qualified #6 at 6.20/236.22 but lost on a holeshot to Tripp Shumake in round one, 6.42/217 to 6.376/223.32. Where was the 6.16 run? |

Notes: In my opinion, this was Henry Harrison's best year behind the wheel of an FC. Before this, his biggest claim to fame had been his booting Mickey Thompson's Mustang to a 6.54/226 to take Low ET at the '71 NHRA US Nationals. Having Amos Satterlee as his crew chief didn't hurt either. Ten years earlier, Amos had put a blower on Eddie Schartman's SOHC-powered Comet and made him the most feared Funny Car at the end of the '67 season. While it was no longer a SOHC, he still knew how to make a KB run. Henry's season started at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, where he ran 6.79 to qualify #4 for the sixteen-car field. Traction was poor at the meet, and in the first round, he lost to Jack Maroney's 7.65/189 with a 7.69/146. He then went to Beeline Dragway for the Phoenix Winter Championships. It was another sixteen-car show, and his 6.45 qualified #6. His 6.48/226.70 beat Wayne Stoeckel in the opening round of eliminations. But in round two, the eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 6.56/204, beat his 6.85/225.56. He competed at the Bakersfield March Meet, but a 6.65/220.58 lost to Bryan Raines' 6.61/218 in the first round. On April 2, Harrison was at Fremont for the NHRA Division 7 race. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 6.44/226.70. In the opening round, his 6.40/226.70 lost to Jim Dunn's 6.32/215. In May, he was at OCIR for the NHRA Division 7 race. It was a tough show as his 6.34 qualified on the "bump." But he improved to 6.29/229.59 to beat Tom McEwen's sleepy 6.07/217 in round one. In the semifinals, Dave Condit's 6.70/181 in the "L. A. Hooker" lost to Henry's 6.26/225.00. He faced Prudhomme in the final, and the "Snake's" 6.04/242 got the victory over his 6.37/229.00. Things went better on June 10 at OCIR's Funny Car Spectacular. He beat Russell Long, driving the "Sundance" Arrow in round one. A second-round 6.22 (Low ET) at 223.32 sent Jim Adolph packing for home. Henry got a solo in the semifinals when Gary Densham broke, and he ran 6.43/214 to advance. In the final, he faced Pat Foster, who was driving for Joe Pisano. Pat had problems and shut down to 12.03 while Henry won another 6.22 at 226. He was at Sacramento for the third NHRA Division 7 race. He set Low ET in qualifying for the eight-car show with a 6.26/224.44. He opened eliminations with a 6.41/224.44 to stop Densham at 6.54/207. Henry got the "odd-lot" solo in the semifinals as only six cars had shown. He advanced with a 6.33/227.85. He went up against Dave Hough, driving the "Super Shops" Arrow in the final. Dave got the victory with a 6.27/229, while Harrison's motor-blowing 6.40/214.29 got him the runner-up spot. Harrison won the fourth NHRA Division 7 race held at Bonneville Raceway. He set Low ET at 6.52 but only needed a 7.19/219.52 in the final to win as Foster lost a blower belt. On July 29, he qualified #3 at the PDA Championships held at OCIR with a 6.32. He made it into the final before losing to future superstar John Force. He was also runner-up at Beeline's Gold Cup Funny Car race. There it was Tripp Shumake who stopped him in the final. | 1978 D7 Champs. Satterlee worked at Keith Black's at the time, where Engle Cam alumni Wes Cerny was Shop Foreman at one time. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Henry didn't run at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. However, he failed to reach the late rounds there. In April, Henry was at Fremont for the NHRA Division 6 race. He qualified #7 in the eight-car show with a 6.34/231.36, but the race was rain-delayed and Harrison was unable to run the Fremont race as he went to Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals where he qualified #6 with a 6.12/234.98. This was a race where Don Prudhomme, Dale Pulde, and Raymond Beadle all failed to qualify for the eight-car show. Unfortunately, Henry lost to eventual winner Billy Meyer in the first round. At the NHRA Springnationals, Henry's best of 6.29/231.36 failed to qualify (first alternate). At St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals, he qualified #4 in the eight-car show with a 6.69/203.17. A 6.89/196.64 beat Bill Chappelle in the first round, but in the semifinals, the Corvette lost high gear and he lost to eventual winner Tom Hoover. Harrison was at Bandimere for the NHRA Mile High Nationals at the end of June. A 6.38 qualified last in the eight-car field. He beat Gordie Bonin in a close first-round race with the "L. A. Hooker's" 6.48/216.34 defeating Bonin's 6.52/229. In the semifinals, the Corvette failed to fire and Rob Williams soloed into the finals. |

Notes: Henry was at Firebird Raceway during the summer for a Funny Car race. He was driving his own car, but when Gordie Bonin failed to show, he also drove the "Pacemaker" Firebird. Harrison ran a best of 6.34 with his own car on the way to winning the race over Jim Dunn, but he also ran 6.55 in the Firebird. | The 2nd car to Bonin's touring car. Phil Elliott's early-80s Northwest News and Views mentioned that Henry Harrison and Ed McCulloch also drove this mainly NW car. - Joe Moore |

Notes: I recommend Dwight Guild's YT OCIR video channel showing '80-'83 events, including rear views of Harrison in the HB Gold car's FTQ runs at the May 1982 OCIR meet. I went back to the pits to see who did the monster burnouts and saw '733' taped on the HB car. Those stomp-down burnouts Harrison did that day (and night when he raced the jet after his FTQ) were thunderous. Like the Jam-Air/Litdke car, the motor would wind down completely silent after the burnout as the car slowed down, then idle again. It was a badass sound. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Harrison was probably best known for setting Low ET (6.54) at Indianapolis way back in '71, driving Mickey Thompson's Mustang. He was a hired driver driving many cars. In June, he drove John Martin's Corvette at Fremont for an eight-car show. Harrison set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 at 6.24/234.37. Only seven cars showed, so he got the "odd-lot" solo in round one and advanced with an easy pass. He got another solo in the semifinals when his would-be opponent, Rodney Flournoy, had no car. Rodney had won his first-round race, but the car went up in flames and burnt to the ground. Henry's 7.08/142.63 advanced. He faced Sherm Gunn in the final, and his 6.44/225.99 got the victory over Gunn's off-pace 7.06/193. He was also at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. It was another eight-car field, and considering that drivers such as Tom McEwen, John Force, and Gordie Bonin failed to qualify, Henry's #6 qualifying 6.33/209.33 looked pretty good. Unfortunately, another 6.33/209 in the first round, lost to Raymond Beadle's close 6.32/230 in the "Blue Max." In August, he was at Bonneville Raceway for the AHRA Western Nationals. In the first round, an off-pace 6.78/212.77 lost to eventual winner John Collins' 6.40/211. Harrison qualified #1 at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals on August 23 with a 5.98. Spokane's elapsed time and speed clocks were said to be automatically adjusted for the track's 2,430-foot elevation. In the opening round of eliminations, he lost to Mike Miller. A week later (August 31), he was again a low qualifier with a 6.09 at Portland International for the AHRA Northwest Nationals. The car broke in the first round, and he lost to Bonin. At Fremont, he again out-qualified some "name" drivers at the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals. It was a sixteen-car show, and he qualified on the "bump" with a 6.13/233.76. Some "names" that failed to qualify included Don Prudhomme, Kenny Bernstein, Force, and McEwen. Eventual winner Mike Dunn, driving the "Hawaiian," stopped Harrison's 6.24/233.76 in the first round with a 6.16/230. The car continued to show it had power at the NHRA World Finals at OCIR. Harrison continued to out-qualify the favorites, running 6.11/239.36 for the #13 spot in the field. In the first round, he improved to 5.983/241.93, but he was late and lost to Beadle's 6.00/224. | That 5.98 loss to the Blue Max was something to see. In the same round Dale Armstrong went 5.89 in the Speed Racer. Lidtke and Harrison would throw in again in '83 on the 5.8- second Lidtke-Harrison-Lidtke Trans Am. The Jam-Air, with Gary Southern, was absent at the '82 Winters. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Harrison competed at the Bakersfield March Meet, where his 6.08/243.24 qualified #3 for the eight-car field. An opening round 6.10/240.64 beat Mert Littlefield, and in the semifinal, his 6.14/240.64 defeated Tim Grose's 6.26/223. In the final, he went up against the "Hawaiian" driven by Mike Dunn. Henry had trouble and shut down at 9.23 in a runner-up finish to Dunn's 6.04. Shortly after that, he was at OCIR for its first of two 64-car shows held in April. All cars were to make two passes, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Harrison ran good, but his ETs were not good enough to make the final. He had run 6.06/238.72 to beat John Force in his first race. His opponent, Littlefield, tagged the guardrail in the second race, and Henry's 6.10/241.28 won their race. The following week (April 9), they did it again at OCIR. Once again, he failed to run well enough to make the final, but his 6.11/238.09 in the first round easily beat Mike Van Sant. In his second race, he fouled against Jim Dunn and shut down to 7.39. Lidtke made one of the first twin pump setups. Henry ran one NHRA national event, the World Finals. He qualified #7 at 5.887/248.61. Sherm Gunn pulled off a slight upset by defeating Harry in round one, 6.04/234.98 to 6.10/242.58. |

Notes: Lidtke made one of the first twin pump setups. Harrison started the season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 6.45. In the first round, he improved to 6.31/232.55 (Top Speed) to beat Gary Thompson, who had got out of shape and shut off. In the semifinals, he set Low ET with a 6.15 to beat Mike Dunn in the EXP-bodied "Hawaiian." He faced Don Prudhomme in the final, and the "Snake" took the victory when Henry had to shut down early with problems. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he failed to qualify for the all-five second show (times not reported). In March, he won over an eight-car field at Carlsbad. In the opening round, his 6.60 advanced over a fouling John Martin. In the semifinal, he set Low ET with his 6.15/207 beating Bryan Raines in the "Impulse" Mustang. He faced Billy McCahill in the final, and Harrison's 6.78/188.66 took the victory when Billy smoked the tires and shut off. That was the team's only NHRA national event in 1984. |

Notes: Rick Howard photo from 1996 US Nats, Indy. Qualified 16th at 5.18/295.76 but had the misfortune of running against John Force in round one. Would eventually be the sixth member of the Castrol Four Second Club (October 26/1996) with a 4.932 at Pomona Calif. | Richard Hartman had the only Chevy-bodied car to qualify in Funny Car at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 5.51/218.49 got him the #15 spot in the field. He shocked Tony Pedregon in the opening round when his 5.04/297.42 beat the #2 qualifier's 5.11/300. Tony was so surprised that he thought his car had broken the way Richard had pulled away. But in round two, Hartman lost to Gary Clapshaw in a Camaro versus Mustang run. At Firebird Raceway, for the NHRA Arizona Nationals, Richard's 5.15/293.82 qualified #3. But this time, it was he who was upset in the first round. Gary Bolger, who qualified #14, stepped up to 5.24 to eliminate him in the opening round. Hartman continued to qualify strongly at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 5.08/293.73 qualified #2 behind Al Hofmann's 5.06/287. He had a close first-round race that saw his 5.11/282.57 beat Tim Wilkerson's 5.14/275. But in round two, an off-pace 5.54/221.02 lost to Del Worsham's 5.41/215. It was then off to Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals. A 5.13/288.83 qualified #5. But he lost to Tony Pedregon in round one. He did not race at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. Richard ran 4.932/304.05 to lead qualifying at the NHRA World Finals. Unfortunately, he lost to Ray Higley in round one, when he shut off to a 12-second pass. |

Notes: At NHRA Columbus, Richard filled in for car owner Paul Smith. Hartman qualified 14th at 5.32/281.86. He defeated Gary Densham in round one, 5.324/270.59 to 8.15/106, but fell in round two to Kenji Okasaki, 5.78/247 to 9.340-90.78. Richard ran several NHRA events. We need to confirm which car he drove for those. Rick Howard photo from 1997 NHRA Pontiac Excitement Nats, Columbus. |
