Notes: Richard drove four cars in 1997. We think he started the season in the Geronimo car and ran his best times. We need confirmation. Richard qualified #11 at Pomona at 5.086/246.17. He beat Cruz Pedregon in round one, 5.123/256.70 to 14.49/67, and Gary Bolger in round two, 6.353/193.46 to 8.08/114. Al Hofmann defeated him in the semis, 4.90/311 to 6.361/138.76. He qualified #5 at Phoenix at 5.044/291.26 but lost to Chuck Etchells in round one, 5.10/286 to 7.190/125.36. At Houston, Richard ran 5.152/283.10 for the #12 slot but lost to Etchells in the first round, 5.12/305 to 5.486/283.73. Richard ran 5.355/284.09 to claim the #16 position at Englishtown but was a no show against Etchells in round one. At Topeka, Richard was driving the Ray Higley machine. We need to confirm if any of these listed events were in one of the other three cars Richard drove this year. |

Notes: 6.19 at Santa Pod's "World Finals" is considered a little quick for a Euro Funny Car in 1979. however, at that same race, Gene Snow & Raymond Beadle ran a famous 6.00 to 6.04 run. Hasselstrom was usually "really close if not right there" in performance. |

Notes: The "Chi-Town" bunch needed a new driver for '80 as their driver, Pete Williams, left at the end of '79. Austin Coil contacted Simon Menzies for the job, but Simon was unable to tour, so he recommended Frank Hawley. Coil decided to give Frank a try. Hawley went to Chicago to audition for the job, and his first race was to be a best of three match against Kenny Safford at US 30, Gary, Indiana. He won the match three straight. Since he still didn't have a fuel funny car license, Safford was the first to sign his license. After this, Hawley asked Coil if he had the job. Austin replied, "for another week." This continued for the next two years until they won the NHRA World Championship in '82. Then he was hired. The team ran at Union Grove a lot. Frank made it into the semifinals at the Olympics of Drag Racing in May before losing to Don Prudhomme. At the NHRA Division 3 race at Union Grove, Hawley finished runner-up to Tom Hoover. The team attempted to qualify at the PHR Championships, but a best of 6.56 left them as the seventh alternate for the show. |

Notes: Frank ran his best ever (to this point) of 6.01/234.37 to qualify #5 at the NHRA Summernationals. He beat Al Segrini in the first round, with a 6.17/229.59, but unfortunately, he broke in the second round, giving Kenny Bernstein a free ride into the semifinal. He faced Mike Dunn in the "Hawaiian" in a best two out of three match race at Edgewater. Frank won two straight with times of 6.06 and a track record 6.04 at 236. Late in July, he was at US 131 in Martin, Michigan, for a four-car race. All cars ran two races with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. In Hawley's first race, his 6.13/220.58 lost to Dunn's 6.12/238. Another 6.13/222.77 beat Al Bergler in his second race. The final was between the "Hawaiian" and the "Chi-Town Hustler." Unfortunately, Dunn broke, and Frank ran 6.15/216.34 for the victory. The team was at Englishtown in August for the Race of Champions event. Frank set Low ET at 6.11, but he failed to reach the finals. Back at US 131 for the PHR Championships on August 16, Hawley qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 6.17. He fell off to 6.39/217.39 in the first round and lost to the race's eventual winner Bernstein at 6.35/225. The team set Low ET at 6.09 and went on to win the World Series of Drag Racing event at Cordova. A final round 6.16/234.37 beat Bob Pickett's 6.22/212. |

Notes: Short 118" wheelbase to fit in panel truck hauler, ran 5.90s everywhere, 5.80s everywhere else, won NHRA championship first year trying. His 5.969 at the Winters was half of the quickest side-by-side race in history (Ray Beadle, 5.975). He also ran 247.25 at Brainerd (half of the fastest side by side in history with Al Segrini's 240.64). Ran 5.95 at Martin, MI, PHR race. Ran the 5.82/247 in the "Big Bud Shootout" at Indy (we need confirmation of the third digit on the ET). The best confirmed NHRA national event times were 5.823 Low ET at the Golden Gate Nats and 247.25 in the final round while winning at Brainerd. Photo from 1983. |

Notes: Frank started the year by winning the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. He qualified #2 with a 5.976/241.28. He ran his slowest time of eliminations in the first round, a 6.08/236.84, but it was still enough to beat Jim Dunn's 6.18/227. In round two, Hawley picked up to a 5.93/239.36 to beat a tire-smoking Don Prudhomme, while another 5.93 in the semifinals beat Tom McEwen. He faced low qualifier Tom Anderson in the final, and the "Chi-Town" car churned out yet another 5.93 at 249.30 (Top Speed) to get the victory. Tom lost with a 6.02/241. In March, he won the next NHRA race as well, the Gatornationals. Frank qualified #9 with a 5.93/208.81, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car. Mark smoked his tires in their race, and Hawley advanced with a 5.90/245.90. In round two, his 5.93/241.93 beat Raymond Beadle's 6.19/213 in the "Blue Max." In the semifinals, Frank ran 5.94/240.65 to beat Mike Dunn's 6.06/233 in the "Hawaiian." The final was between him and Dale Pulde. Dale ran a good 5.98/242 but lost to Frank's 5.92/242.58. The "Chi-Town Hustler" team won its third NHRA race in a row when Frank won the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 5.95/243.90, but in the first round, Oswald fouled against him, and he advanced with a 5.99. He got past Ken Veney in the semifinals and met with Al Segrini in the final. Hawley got the victory with a 5.99/240.64 over Segrini's 6.07/214. The team then went to a UDRA meet at Byron and won that as well, setting a track record 6.02. They did not compete at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, but the "Chi-Town" car was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 5.95/234.98 qualified #3, but in the opening round, Hawley's 6.03/235.60 lost to Anderson's 5.97/240. The team then traveled to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Hawley qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 5.98/238.09. In round one, a controversial 5.716 beat Segrini, but he smoked the tires in the semifinals and lost to Don Prudhomme. It should be noted that NHRA listed Prudhomme's 5.91 from qualifying at Low ET. (Event winner Mark Oswald actually got a 5.621 in round one, quicker than Top Fuel Low ET of 5.662 by Richard Tharp). Photo from booked in Funny Car show at GVRC WWCS meet in April of 1983. Hawley won the show and set Low ET at 6.03. | The car was repainted in Team Strange colors in mid 1983. - Danny White |
