Notes: Hawley drove at the NHRA Gators, then Wayne Minick took over. That was the team's only NHRA national event in 1985. Photo from Gainesville 1985, with Hawley driving. Frank's 5.78 qualified #9, and he faced low qualifier Kenny Bernstein in round one. It wasn't much of a race as the "Chi-Town Hustler" blew a transmission and slowed to 12.73/59.91 while Bernstein advanced with a 6.25/226. |

Raymond Beadle smoked the tires in the "Blue Max" in round two, and Jim advanced with a 6.09/250.69. In the semifinal, his off-pace,6.30/240, fell to eventual winner Billy Meyer's 5.73/252. As mentioned, he did well at the NHRA Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. He qualified #3, and in round one, his 6.02/246 beat Frank Hawley's 6.01/241 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." He then beat Al Segrini in the second round with a 5.99/245. In the semifinals, a 6.08/245 beat a tire-smoking Mark Oswald. He faced Billy Meyer in the final, and despite a good 6.01/245.90 run, he lost to Meyer's better 5.92/249. Bristol was his next stop for the IHRA Springnationals. Twenty-five cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen car field, and his 5.98/243 qualified #15. Unfortunately, his 6.07/240.00 in the first round lost to Denny Savage's 5.97/248. At the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan's US 131, Jim ran a 5.77 track record to qualify first in the sixteen-car show. He stayed strong with a first-round 5.78 over Tom Hoover. In round two, a 6.06 beat Don Prudhomme's 6.13. His 6.10 in the semifinal fell to eventual winner Hawley's." He went from top qualifier to the last qualifier when he ran 6.00/247.25 to qualify #16 at the NHRA Springnationals. A first-round 6.07/243.90 lost to Beadle's 5.97/238. Maple Grove hosted the Super Stock Nationals on June 24, and Jim qualified #4 for the eight-car field with a 5.89/249.30. But in round one, he smoked the tires and lost to Bruce Larson. At the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada, he qualified #9 with a 5.92/250.00. He failed to reach the finals. The following weekend (July 8), he was in Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Jim was running really well here as his 5.73/257.87 (#4) in qualifying attests. In the first round, his 5.76/250 beat Bob Gottschalk's 6.09/247. He turned some heads in round two, where his 5.68/260.86 beat Tom McEwen's 5.81/235. In the semifinal, he slowed to 5.80/257.87, which lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.81/255. After such a great performance, Englishtown was not so great. His 5.91/250.69 qualified #14 for the NHRA Summernationals, and he lost to Hawley in the first round. Jim surprised everyone by winning the prestigious US Nationals over Kenny Bernstein. His best NHRA times were 5.844 at Brainerd and 255.68 at Indy. Notes: Photo from Indy 1986. Qualified on the bump at 2006 US Nats at 5.809. We need to confirm these best times for 2006. Ran identical 5.531 at Ennis Fall 87. Drag Racing List has 5.686/261.62 in the 86/87 issue. | Head started the '86 season at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing. He qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car show with a 5.90/247.93. In the first round his 5.93/257.14 lost to Tom Hoover's 5.86/245. Jim attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 6.16/205.47 failed to make the field. Atlanta held an eight-car show early in the year and Jim qualified #5 with a 6.39/188.28. Unfortunately, on his qualifying pass, the blower let go and it tore up the tinwork in the Firenza. He was unable to run and alternate Steve Hodkinson replaced him in eliminations. The car was fixed in time for Gainesville and the running of the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #11 with a 5.89/253.52. He lost to Billy Meyer in the first round. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, he ran 5.91/250.41 to qualify #10. He beat Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car in the first round, and in round two, both he and Paul Smith smoked the tires with Jim's 6.22/248.48 getting the win. In the semifinals, Johnny West, driving the "Hawaiian," fouled against him, so he motored into the final with an 8.38/108.93. In the final, he ran Ed McCulloch and although both ran 6.00 (Head at 250.13), Ed got the win. Baton Rouge for the Cajun Nationals was NHRA's next stop and Head was there, qualifying #8 with a 5.94/250.97. A first-round 6.07/214.18 beat Jerry Jefferson, but in round two against Billy Meyer, he got out of shape and crossed the centerline. |

Notes: Jim's answer to Bernstein's Batmobile car. Jim was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he failed to qualify. He exploded a supercharger on one attempt, and his best of 5.85/243.04 was good for the second alternate. Atlanta held an eight-car show in March, run in conjunction with the NHRA Division 2 race. It was initially scheduled for the 8th, but it was postponed one week to the 15th due to rain. Jim qualified #2 in the field with a 5.85/222.22. He beat Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" in the first round, with a 5.94/237.46. In the semifinals, he ran an easy solo pass when Johnny West could not run after hurting his engine in the "Hawaiian." In the final, Jim was up against low qualifier Tom Hoover. Head reset the track record with a 5.66 at 234.37 to get the victory over Hoover's 6.01/228. Due to the rain delay, Jim could not race at the IHRA Winternationals as it was run the same day as the Atlanta event. So, the following week (March 22), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 5.76/251.81 qualified #12. A first-round 5.70/253.30 beat a tire-smoking Beadle, but in round two, he smoked the tires to 6.75/119.11 and lost to West's 5.81/248. The next stop was at the Texas Motorplex for the NHRA Winston All-Star race. It was an eight-car field, and Jim's best of 5.71/254.88 failed to make the show. Head debuted his new "Batmobile" Firenza at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he ran 5.81/256.41 to qualify #10 for the show. Only sixteen cars showed for the sixteen-car field, so qualifying was easy. In the first round, he had a blower explode, and he slowed to 6.10/187.03 in a loss to John Force's 6.01/253. Shortly after that, he went to Maple Grove for the Spring Funny Car Nationals. He qualified for the final by running 5.82. The other finalist was Bruce Larson, who had run 5.79. Jim got off the line first in the final, and his 5.78/222.22 held off Bruce's quicker 5.72/247 for the title. He was at Rockingham in May for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He qualified #2 in the eight-car show with a 5.81 behind Kenny Bernstein's 5.67. These two would work their way to the final. Jim ran 5.91/250.00 over Scott Kalitta and 5.93/247.93 in the semifinals to advance when Mark Oswald broke in the "Candies and Hughes" car. Bernstein had the edge as he had run 5.70s to reach the final. Sure enough, Kenny reached deep into his bag of tricks in the final and came up with a 5.61/256 to win over Jim's runner-up effort of 5.89/248. The Cajun Nationals was the second NHRA national event in a row that only had sixteen fuel funnies show. A 5.93/233.28 qualified Jim #6, and in round one, his 5.95/246.23 beat Pat Walsh's 6.09/232. He improved to 5.88/225 in round two to advance when Force broke on the line. But in the semifinals, he had problems and slowed to 7.42/132.17 in a loss to West's 5.68/253. In June, Jim was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #12 with a 5.92/244.56 and an opening-round 5.89/242.98 beat Larson. He surprised a tire-smoking Hoover in the second round with another 5.92 at 250.27 to advance into the semifinals, where he would meet Dominic Santucci. Jim ran his best ET of the weekend, a 5.84 at 246.23, to beat Santucci's 5.99/247. In the final, he faced Billy Meyer, who had not won an NHRA event since 1984. Meyer changed all that by running 5.84/251 to claim the victory over Head's troubled 7.07/132.80. He then went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. The field was one car short, but Jim still reeled off a 5.85/248.62 to qualify #6. An opening round 5.90/241.61 beat Jerry Caminito's 6.08/236 but in round two, his off-pace 6.33/156.63 fell to Ed McCulloch's 5.88/247. Back in the US for the NHRA Sunmmernationals held at Englishtown in July, he was the first alternate at 5.87/235.47 when twenty-four cars attempted to qualify. Not long after that (July 26), he was at Bandimere for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Head qualified #12 with a 6.01/235.29, but he went out early when his 6.05/234.92 lost to Oswald's 5.90/247 in the opening round. Twenty-one cars showed to attempt to qualify at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals held in Mid-August. Jim got the #11 spot in the field with his 5.73/244.89. A tire-smoking shut-off 12.37 lost to Meyer's 5.70/259 in round one. RH |
