Notes: Head started his season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #12 with a 5.67/252.38, and he won his opening round race against Tripp Shumake, who lost a blower and crossed the centerline. His opponent, Brad Tuttle, smoked the tires in round two, and Jim's 5.66/258.76 advanced. Mark Oswald smoked the tires in the "Candies and Hughes" car in the semifinal, and Head ran 7.66/123.59 to go into the final. There he would face Dale Pulde. Dale had been running 5.4s, so it looked like he was in trouble. It turned out that both smoked the tires, and Pulde recovered first to a 6.02/223 to take the victory over Jim's 6.38/184.95. He was at Gainesville in March for the NHRA Gatornationals. His 5.70/248.48 qualified #13, and in round one, he beat Johnny West, who was driving the "Hawaiian."Both had problems, and Jim's 7.29/138.29 beat West's 9.67/87. But his 8.78/97.91 lost to Tom Hoover's 6.06/218 in round two. He then raced at the IHRA Texas Nationals, where he qualified #11 with a 5.58/236.53. Unfortunately, he lost in the first round. He qualified #5 at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, but he windowed a block while running 5.65/253.37 in defeating Darrell Amberson in the first round. After changing the engine, he smoked the tires against John Force in round two. The following week, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. It was an eight-car field, and his 5.59/254.95 qualified #3. Amberson broke against him in round one, and Jim advanced with a 5.98/245.23. In the semi-final, Oswald fouled, and Jim ran 5.72/248.61. In the final, he went up against low qualifier Ed McCulloch, and Head fouled. He shut down to 6.33/175.00 while Ed ran 5.68/261 for the victory. Jim showed up using a new high-gear only, AFT 5-stage clutch at Memphis. It seemed to pay off as he ran 5.55/264.00 to qualify second to John Force's similar,5.55/263. In the first round, Head's 5.68/253.02 beat West's 5.86/247. In round two, he used a 5.71/255.02 to defeat R.C.Sherman's 5.82/259. He and Oswald had a close race in the semi-final that saw Mark's 5.62/268 beat his 5.65/264.70. Still, Head was now up to fourth in NHRA points with the semi-final finish. Photo from Columbus 1988. Jim started running top fuel beginning at Indy in 1988 and continued in that class in 1989. The Memphis and Columbus times were his best of the year, but Jim was a solid qualifier in the 5.50s and 5.60s and nearly reset his bests at Seattle with a 5.565/267.06 pass. |

Notes: On May 9, Martin, Michigan, held a Chevy Funny Car show. It was an eight-car show, and in the opening round of eliminations, Hedrick's 7.68/196.07 beat an out-of-shape Ron O'Donnell. A semifinal 7.61/194.86 beat Pete Williams's 7.57/194 in "Jungle Jim's" second car. He faced Mike Burkhart in the final, and despite running a quicker 7.65/196.50, he lost to Mike's 7.75/191. Hedrick was at New York National Speedway for its Springnationals. The race was run over a few days between May 15 and 24. The rain slowed the racing. On the first day of racing, Terry came to the line to face Tony Wahlay's "Warlord." Tony's car jammed in reverse, and the "Super Shaker" jammed in first, so both shut off. Terry came back out later and ran 195.64 while beating Williams. The next day (May 16), he set a track record for Chevy-powered FCs with a 7.38. His speed on that run was 196.92. Then came the rain. On June 7, Terry won the New England Spring Funny Car Championships at Epping, NH. In the first round, he beat Phil Castronovo with a 7.42/198. He actually lost to Bobby Rowe's 7.39/195 in the "Super Duster" with a 7.56/193 but got back in the show on the "break rule." That set up an interesting semifinal round where Hedrick had to run Rowe again. This time, Terry was quick on the lights, and his 7.46/195 beat Bobby's quicker 7.38/195. This put Hedrick in the final against Bruce Larson, who earlier had set Low ET at 7.14. This was quite a surprise to see two Chevy-powered cars in the final (not to mention that one had set Low ET) in a mid-1970 event. But after doing his burnout for the final, Larson's transmission let go. This meant that the quickest loser from the previous round would get back in on the "break rule." That driver was Bobby Rowe again, and for the third time at this event, he would race Hedrick for the victory. Terry prevailed in that final with a 7.49/199 that beat Rowe's 7.77/186. June 10 saw the "Shaker" at Budd's creek for an eight-car UDRA race. An opening round 7.65/196.06 (Top Speed) beat Larry Reyes' 7.63/191 in the "Hawaiian." In the semifinals, his 7.85/157 put Ron Rivero's 8.05/190 in the "Frantic Ford" on the trailer. He met a third Hemi-powered car in the final—this one belonging to "Jungle Jim" Liberman. The two had a good race, and Hedrick picked up the victory with his 7.79/193.30 beating JJ's 7.82/187. On June 20, Terry watched as Leroy Goldstein ran the first "six" at New York National for an eight-car show. Hedrick made it to the final, where he faced Leroy, and Leroy drove the "Ramchargers" Challenger to history's quickest recorded Funny Car time of 6.95 at 209.78 to beat his nice 7.18/199.54. He competed at the Cecil Funny Car Championships on July 18, but he lost in the first round. At the second annual Rockford Manufacturer's Meet, Hedrick broke 200 for the first time with a 200.44 while beating Pat Minick in the "Chi-Town Hustler" in his second race. He did OK in his first race as well; although he got crossed up, he managed to beat Reyes. Terry lost a blower and his third race to Don Schumacher. He failed to qualify at US 131 in August for the PHR Championships. Terry was at Tri-City on August 27 for another eight-car show. He beat the "Mr. Norm" car in the first round, with a 7.37/181 but a pretty great 7.26 in the semifinals, lost to the eventual winner Minick's 7.23. He turned his Nova into a convertible at the Cordova World Series of Drag Racing on August 30. He had been running well, making it into the semifinals, when his blower exploded and ripped the roof off the car. Terry was OK. |

Notes: Terry Hedrick HUGE on the side of the car. AKA' Super Shaker.' Hedrick drove Pete Seaton's Super Shaker Corvair in '67 and '68. In 1969, they built a new Chevy II Nova with a Logghe Chassis featuring independent front suspension. Early in the year, Terry bought out Pete and renamed the car Terry Hedrick's Super Shaker. Same orange, black, and white paint scheme. In 1971, Terry changed to the Camaro body shown here. The speed of 228.42 was originally listed, but it seems too fast for 1971. We need confirmation. | In mid-May, Hedrick retired the Chevy powerplant for a 426 Hemi. Terry built his first 426 using cast-off parts donated by Gary Dyer, Don Schumacher, and Pat Minick. The first time out with the Hemi, he ran 202. By the end of May, he was up to 208. On May 2, Hedrick was at Union Grove for its Manufacturers' Meet. He bent a rod on his warm-up pass and was unable to run in eliminations. Early in May, he was in Minnesota for a four-car show. He eased to an 8.00/198.23 win in his first race when Gary Dyer, driving the "Mr. Norm" car, had a small fire on the line and shut off. In his second race, Terry's 7.95/200 lost to Pat Minick's 7.10/213.27 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." The car broke on that pass, and he was unable to make a third run. In mid-month, he ran at Martin, Michigan, for an eleven-car show, but he failed to reach the finals. He did reach the final at Epping, but he finished runner-up to Gene Snow there. He won two of his three races at Aquasco's Ford vs. Chevy Funny Car race. This is where he debuted the Hemi. A 7.46 beat Larry Fullerton's 7.65 in his first race, but Grove's tough Mustang handed him a loss in the second race, where Terry's 7.48/202.70 lost to Tommy's 7.29/202. In his third race, his 8.00/198.72 beat Lew Arrington's "Brutus" at 8.14/199. Martin, Michigan, held an eight-car show over the Memorial Day Weekend where all cars made three runs. Hedrick did not do too well here as he lost all three races to Roger Lindamood, McEwen, and Minick, in that order. Hedrick was back in Minnesota on May 27 for another four-car show. In his first race, his 7.84/181.81 lost to Richard Tharp's 7.16/179 in the "Blue Max. In his second race, he got out the track and onto the sand for a couple of hundred feet before clicking it off to 13.75/157.89 in a loss to Tommy Grove's 7.37/207. In their third race, these two raced again, with Grove's Ford-powered car coming out on top with a 7.56/202 over Hedrick's 7.82/198.67. He was at Bristol on June 20 for the IHRA Springnationals, but he lost early. This car came to an end at Rockingham on September 26 while attempting to qualify for the IHRA US Open. The car caught fire, and his fire bottles failed. Terry received burns to his hands but was otherwise OK. The Hemi-powered Camaro burned to the ground. Terry was the third alternate at NHRA Gainesville (no times reported). |

Notes: We need to confirm the 6.31 number for 1973. Also listed as 241 mph. That is too fast for 1973 or even 1974. We need to confirm where and when this team ran that speed. |
