Notes: This was the first fuel FC Gary Henderson ever drove. He had been working with Bobby Rowe on the car, and when Rowe left to drive the "Hawaiian," Henderson filled the seat. Gary raced Art Ward in an April best of three match race at Cornhusker. In the first race, his out-of-shape 8.81 beat Ward, who smoked the tires and shut off. In the second race, the "Super Duster" again got out of shape, and this time Art won with an 8.15. The deciding race saw Henderson hook up and win with a 7.45 over Ward's 7.89. Gary also ran 7.08 at US 30, Gary, IN, in September. He won over an eight-car field in October at Southeastern International for its Atlanta extravaganza. It was a 900-foot track. Henderson set Low ET at 5.38 and, in the final, beat Richard Tharp in the "Blue Max." Gary was the #3 qualifier on the Eastern team (and #6 overall) at the NHRA World Finals in Dallas with a 7.305/191.48. He then won round one over Randy Schriber, 7.13/181.81 to 7.50/188.28, but lost to David Ray in round two, 7.21/203.61 to 7.28/196.93. He had trouble qualifying at the NHRA Supernationals at Ontario Motor Speedway. Gary made the show in the #15 spot at 7.034/182.92 but hurt some parts and could not run in eliminations. He was replaced by the first alternate, Jake Johnston. |

Notes: Qualified on the bump at the 1972 NHRA Supernationals with a 6.518. Lost to Danny Ongais in the first round. Ran 6.58 at Beech Bend. | The '72 version of the "Super Duster" used a 118" Don Hardy chassis. The transmission was a Lenco 2-speed that fed the power back to a Dana rear with 4.10 gears. The car weighed in at 1,875 lbs. Bill Taylor and former driver Larry Reyes built the 426 Hemi. It used a Reath crank that supported Brooks rods. The pistons were by Forged True. Lunati supplied the roller cam, the lifters, and the springs. Up top, the Bowers 6.71 blower sat on a Cragar manifold. Cragar was also the choice for the blower drive. The injection came from Enderle. The "Super Duster" of Taylor and Stanley Wolff was still in primer when it showed up at Miami-Hollywood on February 13 for the Winter Championships. Gary Henderson drove the car to a 6.95/182.92 on its first full pass. That was good enough to qualify low for the eight-car field. He made it into the final against Jim Liberman, but the car broke, and he had to watch as "Jungle Jim" soloed for the victory. The team was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where Gary qualified #7, which was pretty good considering that almost 40 cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field, but in the first round, he slowed to 7.33 that finished second best to Joe Jacono's 6.92. Early in April, he was at Chandler Raceway, Indiana, competing against Dale Pulde, Preston Davis, and the "Chi-Town Hustler" in a four-car match. He did not turn any outstanding times there, but on April 9, he won an eight-car show at St. Louis. An opening round 7.02 beat the "Phantom" Corvette driven by Paul Gordon, and in the semifinals, he beat Grover Rogers in the "Motivation" Mustang. He faced Rogers again in the final as Grover got back in on the "break rule," and Henderson set Low ET to win with a 6.91. He got another victory at Atco's Funny Car Championships run on April 23. There he set both ends of the track record with a 6.61/216.00. He stopped Bill Leavitt in the run for the money. He competed at the Connecticut Memorial Day Funny Car Championships, where he won his first-round race with a 7.06, but he lost soon after. Early in June, he was at Maple Grove for the Pennsylvania Dutch Classic. Unfortunately, he broke in the first round, against Roy Harris in the "Frantic Ford," who was having his own problems and sputtered down the track with an 8.45 to win. It was then off to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Gary qualified #11, but an off-pace 7.24 in round one, lost to eventual winner Ed McCulloch's 6.73. The following week (June 18), he was at Rockford for the East-West Meet. A 7.07 qualified #4 there, but he failed to reach the finals. Henderson failed to qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He was back at Connecticut for the Summer Funny Car Championship where his 7.15 beat Tony Wahlay's "Warlord" in the opening round, but in round two, he lost to Liberman. In August, the "Super Duster" was at Atco for the CARS Magazine Championships. Gary ran a 6.95/207.37 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to stop Leavitt, who ran a track record 6.47 at 219, to send Gary home. At the NHRA US Nationals at Indy, he lost to McCulloch in the first round, after qualifying #10 with a great 6.59/223.32. He was disappointed at New England's Funny Car Nationals, where the Duster broke in the first round. Dallas was the next stop for the IHRA Nationals. Gary’s 6.79 qualified #12, and he improved to 6.63 in the first round, to beat Billy Meyer. In round two, he thumped Connie Kalitta with a 6.66, but despite running a strong 6.61/214 in the semifinal, he lost to Dave Condit's 6.55/222 in the "L. A. Hooker." |

Notes: Gary qualified #6 at the Miami-Hollywood Funny Car Nationals in January with a 6.89. He failed to reach the finals. At Pomona, for the NHRA Winternationals, the track was terrible, and he ended up as the twelfth alternate for the show. Henderson also failed to qualify at Lakeland for the IHRA Winternationals in March, but he got into the show when Preston Davis and Lou Azar (Fireball Vega) crashed during qualifying. It didn't help Gary much as his 7.18/173.74 lost to Don Schumacher's 7.00/207 in the first round. Gary was the second alternate at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.974/205.47. Late in June, he was at Southland Dragways for a best of three match against Preston Davis, driving the "Tennesee Bo-Weevil." Both cars failed to start for their first scheduled race. After towing back to the pits, they returned for another try. This time only Davis' car failed to fire. So Henderson ran a piston-burning 6.61/216.23 to win. The third race was also a solo as Gary was busy changing the pistons in the "Super Duster," so Preston ran a 7.02/197 solo. The match was declared a draw. Henderson did pretty well match racing at Lakeland in mid-August. He had a best of three match against Willie Borsch. Gary won three straight with times of 6.78, 6.84, and 6.91. The next day, he faced Shirl Greer, where he won two out of three. He finished in the middle of a pack of 36 non-qualifiers at Indy with a solid 6.69/219.51. That was his last national event of the year. |
