Notes: Higginbotham was at Green Valley Raceway on September 3. It was a day that he would never forget. He had won his first-round race with a 7.49. Everything seemed good for his second-round race. His opponent was running a Chrysler Hemi. The Chevy engines would heat up quickly, so the two competitors agreed to do two burnouts and then stage. While Mart did his two burnouts and pulled to the line. He looked over as the other driver was in the process of doing his third. Higginbotham checked his temperature gauge, and it was creeping up. He was getting frustrated as his opponent pulled to the line and did one more short burnout. By now, the engine was hot. When the two finally raced, Mart got out on him and was in the lead, but coming up to the finish line, the car exploded into a ball of fire. He couldn't see anything and reached around for the fire bottle. He didn't know if he was on or off the track, and the parachute had burned off shortly after he deployed it. He was having a tough time getting the mess stopped, and five feet from the end of the track, he finally did. Harry Schmidt was the first to get to him as he had been down at the end of the track. The ambulance arrived, and they flipped the body's remains off the chassis. Mart's arm had been badly burnt. The fire extinguisher system had been installed only three weeks before this race. He did not like to race with his fire boots as he found them too uncomfortable and bulky to use. He hadn't worn them on his first pass but had them on for the second. He also was wearing his goggles for the first time. Usually, he wore his glasses. It was a wake-up call for him as he always wore them after that. Not long after (September 6), Mart raced at LaPlace for a four-car round-robin. He was unable to get the car to run in the sevens. He lost to Leonard Hughes' 7.33/205 in the first race with an 8.01/184.42. He singled in his second race with an 8.20/157.61. In the last race, Al Vanderwoulde's 7.98/150 beat his 8.24/158.42. He ran an eight-car show in Dallas on September 20 but popped a blower in the first round and lost. He did much better the following week (September 28) at Rockingham for the AHRA US Open, where he made it to the final before losing to Gene Snow's 7.13. He got a big win at Tulsa for the AHRA Points Finals on October 19. He qualified second with a 7.60 and ran an even quicker 7.56 over Paula Murphy in the first round. In the second round, a 7.72 beat John Dekker's 8.22. Snow fouled against him in the semifinals. In the final, he ran another good run of 7.57, but it wasn't needed as Connie Kalitta broke, giving Mart his first big victory. Sid Foster met Mart at Carlisle ark for a best two out of three match race. A 7.97/193.20 lost to Sid's 7.92/198 in the first race, but he picked it up to a 7.33/193 in the second race to beat Foster's 7.51/199. In the tiebreaker, Mart broke a rear end on the burnout letting Foster single for the match race win. He was the quickest qualifier (7.30) at the OCIR Manufacturer's Meet on November 7. The actual race was postponed by rain until November 16. In his first race, a 7.95/195.65 lost to Dick Bourgeois' 7.74/161. In his second race, he did his burnout and found that he had no reverse. That let Gene Snow run a 7.54/194 solo pass. Mart got it all together for his last race, beating Bob Bedell with a 7.64. Mart won at Irwindale on November 23 over a 32-car field. He ran 7.54/187.50 over Della Woods (8.44/174), an 8.68 over a blowing-up Paul Gordon, a 7.60/176.81 over Jess Tyree (8.23/182), and a 7.73/187.10 in the semifinals beat Fred Goeske's 7.81/184 Road Runner. In the final, he defeated Dave Beebe for the victory. - RH | BBC/TorqueFlite/Hardy combo. Featured in 1/71 issue of Super Stock & Funny Car. - RT | Ran 7.35 at Rockingham.

Notes: Higginbotham qualified Mike Burkhart's Nova at the AHRA Winternationals, which was quite an accomplishment considering 52 cars attempted to make the sixteen-car show. But in the first round, he fouled against eventual winner Tommy Grove. Mart was at Rockingham for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships where he won his first-round race, but lost fire while making his burnout to face Don Prudhomme in round two. At the next AHRA Grand American race held at Frontier International, he beat Tom McEwen's 7.92/189 in the first round, with a 7.70/187.07. An off pace 8.12/178.21 lost to Leroy Goldstein's 7.49/173 in the second round. He lost in the semifinals, shutting off to a 9.40/101.23 at the AHRA Grandnationals at Detroit on May 26. It was getting tougher and tougher to win running a Chevy-powered car on Nitro against the Hemis, but Mart proved that it could still be done when he won over a six car field at LaPlace. A first-round 7.62/177.51 beat Don Gay's 7.73/191. In his second race, he had a really tough customer: Leonard Hughes in the "Candies and Hughes" 'Cuda. Mart was up to the task, running 7.53/185.56 to beat Hughes' 7.59/193. He got a gift in his third race when Don Biggers fouled and Higginbotham won with an easy 8.09/129.49. Early in June he was at Bristol for the AHRA Springnationals. A first-round 7.87 lost to another Chevy-powered car, Curtis Wasson's Camaro at 7.81. He was runner-up to Gene Snow at the third NHRA Division 4 race. Mart's times weren't very impressive, but he made it to the final after beating Ezra Boggs with an 8.36, and a fouling David Ray with an 8.04. In the final, he broke while Snow singled to the victory. On August 2, he showed up at New England for the AHRA Grand American with a Hemi-powered Nova. mph from Frontier

Notes: Jim Robbs of RFI backed the car. After driving for Mike Burkhart, Mart Higginbotham stepped out on his own for '71 with this Ramchargers Hemi-powered Vega. Don Long built the 118" chassis, and the body came from J&E. The engine used M/T rods and pistons and a Crower cam. A 30% overdriven Air Research blower sat on a Cragar manifold, and the 80% nitro was fed to the engine by Enderle injection. The power was transferred to the 5.14 Detroit Locker rear by a two-speed Lenco transmission. | This was Mart's most successful season. It was a welcome change after attempting to run the Chevy engine with little success in '70. The new car took a little time to come around, but that was expected. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he did much better at Beeline Dragway in Arizona for the AHRA Winternationals. A 7.20 qualified #5 among the "seeded" entries, and an easy 7.60 in the opening round got around a crossed-up Gary Densham. He improved to 7.03/195.22 in an all-Vega battle with Tom Prock in round two and a third-round 6.90/204.54 beat Don Schumacher's 7.01/198. His run ended in the semifinals, where Gene Snow unleashed Low ET and Top Speed (6.84/214) on him. Higginbotham's next good run came at the NHRA Gatornationals. There he qualified #6 with a 7.03. A 7.05 in round one, advanced when Bill Flynn's car lost fire. Mart really picked up in round two, running a 6.82/205.94 over Leonard Hughes' 6.92, but a semifinal 7.17 lost to Bobby Rowe's 7.02 in the "Super Duster." He then went to West Palm Beach for the third AHRA Grand American race. Mart qualified #1 with a 6.82 (Low ET) at 208.80. He then ran a 7.21 "odd-lot" solo. Round two saw Higginbotham's 6.96/199.54 turn back Dick Harrell's 7.36/200, and in the semifinals, his 6.94 beat Dale Pulde in the Mickey Thompson Pinto. In the final, he was to face Snow, but Snow's two-speed transmission broke, so Mart soloed for the win with a 6.97/208.80. Until this time, the car had been running a stock-stroke 426, but after this race, Mart also went the stroker route, and his times improved to 6.66/217. He was running a lot of match races with the car, and on May 8, he was at Wichita for a best of three against Dave Condit's "L. A. Hooker." Unfortunately, Mart lost that match. Shortly after that, he was at Lebanon Valley for an eight-car show where he finished runner-up to Gary Bolger. On May 23, AHRA held its Southern Nationals at Green Valley Raceway. Art ran really well, hitting a first-round 6.96/203.60 over Vic Cecelia in Charlie Proite's ailing Challenger. A second-round 7.09/169.17 beat John Dekker, but a troubled 7.68/161.87 in the semifinals lost to eventual winner Snow's 6.98/203. The following week (May 28), he won over a sixteen-car field at US 30. A final round 6.76 beat Tom Hoover's 6.96 for the victory. Mart lost early at Baton Rouge for the AHRA Grand American held there on June 6. It was then off to Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals. It was a tough field to get into. Mart sat on the "bump" on Saturday with a 7.23, but he improved to a 7.09 to stay in the show. But in the first round, he got out of shape and crossed the centerline against Henry Harrison, who was driving Mickey Thompson's Mustang. He stopped off at Blaney for a best-of-three match against Warren Gunter's "Durachrome" VW. Mart won all three races and ran the track's first "six," a 6.97.

Notes: Mart's Vega featured a Don Long-built chassis that was offset two inches. The wheelbase was 118" on the right side and 120" on the left. Don Kirby did the body and paint. The 484 Keith Black stroked Hemi was backed by a Lenco two-speed transmission. His '72 bests were 6.47/228. Jim Robbs of RFI backed the car. 6.624/217.39 at Tulsa PRA National Challenge 9/72. Ran 6.956/199.55 at NHRA Pomona for Mart's best NHRA national event times. He also ran 6.51 at Englishtown. He later put Butch Maas in the seat.

Notes: Mart started his last season by running at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. His 6.65/213.82 qualified #9 for the 32-car field. He improved to 6.56/219.51 in the opening round to beat Jim Adolph. In the second round, he beat low qualifier Pat Foster in the Barry Setzer Vega with a 6.63/217.39 to Foster's 6.73/209. In the semifinal, he had a close race with "Jungle Jim" Liberman that saw his 6.62/218.97 lose to JJ's 6.57/221. Higginbotham failed to qualify at the rain-delayed NHRA Winternationals, where 58 cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field. His not qualifying was not because of insufficient power; it was the horrible track conditions, as the low qualifier was a 7.18! At Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals, his brakes failed to hold the car on the line for his first-round race against Paul Radici. Higginbotham's last race was the AHRA Grand American at Dragway 42 on May 24. He qualified #4 and, in the opening round, his 6.67/218.97 beat Tommy Grove's 7.09/205. He got the "odd-lot" solo in round two and made an easy pass, but he fouled against Gene Snow in the semifinals. After that, he retired from driving. Jim Robbs of RFI backed the car.

Notes: Woody built Doug Thorley RE Javelin. Started with an AMC engine, then a 392, finally a late model 426, as shown in the photo. On May 3, Bob was the first qualifier at 8.42/172.28 for the AM team at the OCIR Manufacturer's Funny Car Open. Unfortunately, the car broke and was unable to race. The car was a total loss after getting airborne and crashing down at 200 mph at Irwindale on May 17. Bob was OK.

Notes: Ray first ran nitro on June 3 at Carlsbad. The first run saw the car get out of shape and lose to Gary Densham. He was matched up against Jim Dunn's Camaro in his second race. The two drivers last raced one another at the '64 Winternationals. Unfortunately, it wasn't much of a race as Ray broke an oil line and shut down.

Notes: Photo from 85 Nationals. Higley began the year with a Charger body and later got this Daytona. Ran 6.09/241.93 at ADRA Kansas City International Raceway 8/85. Original pre-Internet draglist entry. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | Ray attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his 6.82 best failed to better the 6.08 "bump." He picked up to 6.28/213.87 at the NHRA Gatornationals, but his time was good for the fifth alternate. | Higley at the NHRA Winston Finals ran 5.980/245.23, but was only good for 6th Alternate.

Notes: Ray attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 6.11/239.36 was good for the first alternate spot. He got into the field when Ron Correnti was involved in an accident with Dave Uyehara. Ron's car, which was already qualified, was too badly damaged to run in eliminations. Ray faced John Force in his first-round race and fouled away a 6.35 while Force took the round win with a 5.70. Higley also attended the NHRA Gatornationals where he qualified #15 with a 5.99/237.84. In the first round, he smoked the tires and shut off to an 8.09/126.36 that lost to Tom McEwen's 5.86/247. A 6.11/240.12 qualified #14 at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, but he lost to Paul Smith in the first round.

Notes: Ray Higley was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 5.663/250.48 ended up as the fourth alternate for the show. He was the fourth alternate at Houston as well, running 5.807/261.02. Ray was the second alternate at Memphis at 5.900/254.09, but he got into the show. He dropped a 5.36 to 5.801/256.82 decision to Cruz Pedregon in round one. Ray was the first alternate at Englishtown at 5.808/222.18, but he got into the show as an alternate again. He broke in the first round, against Al Hofmann. Ray qualified #15 at Columbus with a solid 5.559/268.89. Unfortunately, it was he who could not make the call in round one, and Rick Sherrell took his place. Ray was the third alternate at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with a 5.520/266.35 best. He was also the third alternate at NHRA Ennis with a 5.579 at only 198 mph. And then, you guessed it, the third alternate at the World Finals at 5.765/189.

Notes: Higley was at Bakersfield late in January for its warm-up race. He was having a lot of problems and his best time was 11.20-86.88. Things went much better the following week (Feb. 5) at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He received some tuning help from Roland Leong. His previous best had been 5.50 before this race. His career-best (to this point) 5.22/287.53 qualified #6. Unfortunately, the car broke against Jim Epler in the first round. He then went to Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Arizona Nationals, where more problems kept him to a 9.53/99.53 non-qualifying attempt. Things didn't go any better at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, where he failed to qualify with an 8.10/113.07 best. He recovered from those two horrible showing by running 5.41/260.04 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Although he still didn't qualify(first alternate), it was a step in the right direction. He was the second alternate at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals with a 5.85/198.01. Memphis saw Hiley take a step backward in performance, as he failed to qualify with an 11.59/71.69. Ray went to Pomona for the NHRA World Finals but had problems during qualifying. The best he could run was 5.73/174.38, which was good for the fourth alternate. Rick Howard photo from 1995 NHRA Oldsmobile Springnats, Columbus. DNQ (first alternate) with a best of 5.39/283.19. Ray's best NHRA times were 5.184 at Topeka and 287.53 at the Winters, but he ran several events.

Notes: Rick Howard photo from 1996 US Nats, Indy. Qualified 3rd at 5.00/284.00 with the help of Crew Chief Roland Leong. Defeated Brad Platt (with improved 293.35 speed) in round one, and sneezed a piston in a win over Del Worsham in the quarterfinals. He tried keeping up with Al Hofmann in the semis, but shut it off. Ray lost his battle with cancer in 2000 at the age of 62.
