Notes: Hodkinson began the year at a booked-in race at NHRA D4 Green Valley, TX. Hodkinson crossed the center line on the burnout and during the run. Steve was in Atlanta for an eight-car show in March. He failed to qualify but got into the field when Jim Head lost a supercharger and could not run. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round and lost to Tom Hoover. He qualified #4 at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, but in the first round, he lost fire, giving opponent Norm Day a solo into the semifinals. In April, at the NHRA Southern Nationals, Steve qualified #13 with a 5.96/239.48 but lost to Tim Grose in the first round. He went to Rockingham shortly after that for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. It was an eight-car field, and his 5.91/247.25 qualified on the "bump." He scored a major upset in the first round, where his 5.88/246.57 beat low qualifier Mark Oswald's 6.05/205. On June 7, he was in Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was a weak field, as an 11.84-time slip made the show. Hodkinson ran 6.27/227.33 for the #13 spot in the show. He got out of shape in the first round and crossed the centerline, advancing Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car. His next stop was at Kansa City for the ADRA Summernationals. While he failed to reach the finals, he did qualify with a career-best (to this point) 5.83/251.39. Shortly after that, he made a stop at Alamo Raceway, where the NHRA Division 4 race also featured eight-car fields in the Pro classes. His 7.05 qualified #4, and in the first round, he crossed the center line and was disqualified while racing Don Sosenka. At the IHRA World Nationals, his 6.10/226.13 qualified last for the eight-car field. He gave Oswald a race in the first round, where both drivers ran 5.87 (Steve at 238.73), but Mark crossed the finish line first. In September, he was at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals, where he qualified #11 with a 5.87/247.32. A slight holeshot and a 5.88/245.56 beat John Force's 5.85/249, but in the second round, his 5.96/240.77 lost to Brad Tuttle's 5.86/241. He ran an amazing 5.730/256.84 at the World Finals to finish the season with his best NHRA national event times.

Notes: Steve qualified #15 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.740/255.17. Another 5.741 at 241.93 in the first round beat Johnny West's 5.83/250 in the "Hawaiian." Unfortunately, he broke in round two, advancing Dale Pulde. In May, he was at Tulsa for its Springnationals race. A 6.29/222.22 qualified #5 in the eight-car field. His 6.59/211.76 in the opening round fell to Doc Halladay's 6.22/200. Steve was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals near the end of May. He qualified #8 at 5.95/237.59. The race was postponed one week due to rain, and Hodkinson did not return for the "rain date" as he went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #7 in the eight-car field, but he smoked the tires in round one and lost to Mike Dunn. In the first week of June, he was at Atco for the IHRA Summernationals. It was a tough weekend for him as he went through 24 pistons at this race. He qualified #6, and his 6.20/179.64 advanced in the first round when John Force broke. Unfortunately, Steve could not repair it in time for his semi-final race against Ed McCulloch. He was also at Kansas City International in July for its independent Summernationals. It was an eight-car show, and his 6.07 qualified #5. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Darrell Amberson which Steve lost. He attempted to qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals but ended up as the fourth alternate at 5.98/237.71. On August 1st, he was at the Texas Motorplex for the Motorcraft FC Challenge race. It was an eight-car show that was to have all eight make two runs, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. In the first race, his 5.88/228.19 lost to Billy Meyer's 5.63/258. In the second race, he shut down but still won as Mark Oswald lost a blower belt and coasted across the line behind Hodkinson. His times were not quick enough to advance into the final. He went to Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals, but his 6.01/237.65 best failed to qualify. Shortly after that, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA U.S. Open. In round one, he lost to Halladay. Steve's best times of the year were from NHRA Pomona. He ran an ad to sell T-shirts. Notes: Hofmann raced at Englishtown's Spring Funny Car Bonanza in April, but he lost in the first round, of the eight-car show when his 8.99 lost to Stan Bowman's 6.69. Al was at the NHRA Division 1 Opener at Englishtown on May 4th. He qualified #6 in the eight-car show with a 6.50/211.76. In the first round, he advanced with an easy pass when opponent Roy Harris crossed the centerline. Unfortunately, Al's 6.82/189.47 in the semifinals lost to eventual winner John Speelman's 6.30/222.

Notes: Al attempted to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals, but his 6.450/218.07 best was good for the seventh alternate. At Sanair for the NHRA Grandnationals, only fifteen cars showed for the sixteen-car field. Hofmann's 24.314/59.53 qualified for the show. In the opening round, he improved by almost eighteen seconds to 6.324/229.59 to beat Pat Walsh's 6.37/185. Unfortunately, he lost to Mark Oswald in round two with a 13-second shutoff. He was the fourth alternate at NHRA Maple Grove at 6.370/211.11. Al ran 6.07/236 at Englishtown Funny Car Nats 1987.

Notes: Al qualified #13 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.47/267.37. He broke in the first round, against Bruce Larson. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, a 5.54/262.54 qualified #14. He lost to John Force in the first round. In March, he was at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, where he qualified #15 with a 5.65/242.65. Larson got him in round one. Al continued to do well qualifying for these shows. At the NHRA Gatornationals, his 5.53/251.25 qualified #11. Once again, he lost early when he and his opponent, Jim Dunn, smoked the tires in round one. Al shut down to 13.43/54.80 while Jim advanced with a 6.39/235. Hofmann then went to Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. This was an eight-car field, and his 5.57/259.29 failed(third alternate)to qualify. He got past the first-round at the next NHRA event, the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. There he ran 5.61/259.14 to qualify #12, and in the first round, he fouled. But in the opposite lane, K.C. Notes: Al qualified #2 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.13/289.20. A first-round 5.25/282.48 beat Richard Hartman while in round two, a 5.16/281.86 beat a tire-smoking Tom Hoover. In the semifinals, his 5.30/283.72 lost to Del Worsham's 5.22/290. At the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals in Arizona, a 5.26/282.48 qualified #7. He beat Chuck Etchells' 5.22/272 in the first round, with a 5.15/287.72. In the second round be beat John Force's 5.22 with a 5.16/276.07. Unfortunately, the run came at a price as the engine blew and the resulting fire destroyed the car. He was unable to run in the semifinals giving his scheduled opponent, Jim Epler a freebie into the final. He recovered nicely at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. There he ran a career-best (to this point) 5.09 at 289.57 to qualify #2. In round one a 5.13/281.86 beat Jack Wyatt. In the second round, his 5.18/285.62 beat Hoover. In the semifinals, he beat Brent Fanning with a 5.18/269.05. This moved him into the final against Force. Al wanted this one badly, maybe too badly, as he fouled and shut down to 10.16/81.16 while John got the victory with a 5.05/289. He picked up a bit more at the NHRA Gatornationals when he set a Gainesville track record in qualifying #1 with a 5.08 at 284.36. Hofmann and Force worker their way to the final for the second NHRA event in a row. Al beat Epler with a 5.40/268.33 in the first round, while a 5.21/283.46 advanced in round two when Chuck Etchells broke. In the semifinals, Gary Bolger smoked the tires and Al's 5.17/284.27 moved into the final. Luck was not on Al's side as he when into a wheelstand and shut down to 11.08/74.61 while Force got another one with a 5.21/257. He hit a home run at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. While the event didn't offer points, it was sure a dominating performance. He qualified #1 in the eight-car field with a 5.26/278.63. He ran like a bracket racer hitting 5.26/276.83 and 5.26/282.39 to beat Bolger and Cruz Pedregon and advance into the final. In the final, he met Gordie Bonin driving the "Hawaiian." Al got the victory with a Low ET and Top Speed blast of 5.18/288.55.
