Notes: Hoover's first funny car. Woody Gilmore chassis, Fiberglass Trends Challenger body. Photo from Minnesota Dragways, summer 1970. | After running a SOHC Ford-powered Top Fuel dragster for the last couple of seasons, Tom switched to FC's for '70. It was definitely a learning experience. His first time out with the car came at Irwindale shortly before the NHRA Winternationals. The first time they lowered the body, he was claustrophobic; he "got over that weird feeling after a few runs." He failed to qualify the car at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He was at Fremont for the Northern Nationals but had transmission trouble in the first round and lost to Frank Federici in the "Shark." Tom had one of only two FCs that showed up at NHRA's third Division 5 race held at Thunder Valley, Marion, SD. Unfortunately, in their run for the money, his 8.13/187.50 lost to Art Ward's 8.05/175. He competed at the Rockford Manufacturer's Meet, where all cars were to run three rounds. He fouled (8.16) in his first race, but a 7.47 in his second race beat Marc Susman in the "Atlas Oil Tool" car. He also won his third race with a strong 7.28/206.42. He had a bad day in August at Minnesota Dragways. It was a four-car race, and he soloed in his first race with a 7.55/197.36 when John Collins, who was now driving the "Atlas Oil Tool" car lost fire. Hoover was to race Bryan Teal in the "Super Chief" in his second race, but while backing up from his burnout, Tom's brakes failed. He tried to stop the car by swerving it into the sand that ran alongside the track. Everyone got out of the way except for one boy who escaped with just some bruises. He repaired the brakes in time to make a final run against Kenny Safford in the "Mr. Norm" car. Safford lost a rod on their run, and Tom's 7.34/200.89 got the win. His next stop was at Bristol for the eighth AHRA Grand American race. An opening round 7.99/164.23 got past Bob Sullivan's ailing Camaro, and in round two, his 7.67/187.10 beat Dick Harrell's 7.94/184. In the semifinals, Don Prudhomme's 7.18/204 sent Hoover's 7.56/198.96 packing. Hoover ran a career-best since joining the Funny Car ranks of 7.048/209 in qualifying #7 at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. A first-round 7.209/204.54 lost to Bobby Rowe's 7.22/206 in the "Super Duster." A National Dragster article stated that he had run a best of 6.90 this season. Tom's known best IHRA ET was a 7.04 at Rockingham. |

Notes: Hoover's '70 Challenger, run at the beginning of 1971. Tom was at Lions in Jan for the first AHRA Grand American of '71. He qualified with a 7.23 but smoked the tires in the first round, and shut off to an 8.27 that lost to Rich Siroonian's 6.78. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #7 with a 7.179/194.38, but his 7.36/191.48 in the first round, lost to Mike Snively's 7.17/206 in Jim Annin's car. On February 21, Hoover was at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified with a 7.29/191.46. Tom made it into the finals at Las Vegas for the Stardust Open. It was an eight-car show, and he ran 7.30 and a 7.20 in the semifinals over Jake Johnston's quicker 7.18 in Gene Snow's second car. In the final, he was to run Kenney Goodell, but he lost a rod, giving Goodell the win. By NHRA Indy, Tom had converted to his new Charger. |

Notes: Although Tom Hoover started the 1971 season in his 1970 Challenger, he had this Charger built for the new season. Just like his last car, the new one used an RCE chassis. This one had a 120" wheelbase It was built in less than two months. It used a Halibrand Quick-change rear with 5.12 gears as well as a Lenco two-speed transmission. Keith Black supplied the stroked late model Hemi. A 33% overdriven Air Research blower sat on a Cragar manifold. M/T rods and Forged True pistons were used along with a Crower cam. The body was by Ed Wills. Hoover won AHRA St. Louis 71 in this machine. He also ran the car at NHRA Indy and Ontario. Tom was the sixth alternate at Indy with a 7.050/210.28. He qualified #12 at Ontario with a 7.027/206.42. In round one, he lost to Don Schumacher, 6.90/212 to 7.22/200.89. |

Notes: Tom was at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals with his new Satellite. Seventy-five cars were attempting to qualify, and Hoover's 7.02 best was good for the fourth alternate. There were still plenty of cars at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where 58 cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car show. The "Showtime" car must have stood out as it was awarded the "Best Appearing car." The rain-delayed event had to be run in poor track conditions. Still, Tom was able to slip and slide to 7.35 to qualify #2. Stan Shiroma fouled against him in the first round, and Hoover advanced with a 7.78. In the second round, his 7.59/207 lost to the race's eventual winner Don Schumacher who beat him with a 7.43/210. All was not lost, though, as the Satellite was awarded the race's "Best Appearing Car." Tom then went to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. He qualified in the #13 spot and then beat Jake Johnston driving Tom McEwen's Duster in round one. In the second round, a 7.15 took out John Collins driving the "Atlas Oil Tool" car, and a 7.17 in the semifinals beat Dave Uyehara's 7.41 in Larry Huff's car. This put him into the final against Ed McCulloch. Tom proved up to the task by running 7.14/218.44 for the victory over Ed's 7.57/196. The following week (March 11), he qualified #1 at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals with a 6.56/215.30. Another 6.56 in the first round, lost to Don Prudhomme's Low ET setting 6.45. He was runner-up to Schumacher at Tulsa for the AHRA Grand American on April 11. He faced Ron Colson driving the "Chi-Town Hustler" for a best of three match race at Minnesota, but it wasn't Tom's day as he lost three straight. Hoover qualified #2 at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grand American race. Unfortunately, the engine came up ailing in the first round, and his 8.01 lost to Dale Emery in the "Jeg's" Camaro. He also qualified well at the AHRA Springnationals at Century 21 Raceway in Denver. His 6.73 qualified #3, but he lost to Gene Snow in the first round. Tom won the fourth NHRA Division 5 race in Minnesota. He ran 7.22 in the first round over Doc Halladay's 7.31 and took it easy in the semifinals when John Dekker fouled against him. In the final, he got the victory with a 7.14/206.42 over Art Ward. First Showtime. Back with Pa Hoover. Former Whipple and Mr. Ed Satellite. |

Notes: Tom purchased this car from Don Prudhomme after the Snake ran it at the AHRA and NHRA Winternationals and found it not to his liking. Hoover had his new Vega out at the Bakersfield March Meet, where he ran 6.63 to qualify #8. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.79 beat Joe Lee's 6.84, but in round two, his 6.73 lost to Twig Zeigler's 6.53. Photo from the 1974 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park, where Tom qualified 6th at 6.390/222.77 and lost in the first round, to Al Bergler (his best NHRA national event times of the year). Ran 6.42 at Martin, 6.46 at Pomona, 6.39 at Indy. |

Tom qualified #7 at Seattle at 6.286/227.27. He beat Jim Dunn in round one, 6.38/220.58 to 6.70/178.92. In round two, he did not start, sending Dave Uyehara on to a 19-second win. At the World Finals in Ontario, Tom qualified #15 at 6.44/221.13. He lost to Bob Pickett in round one, 6.248/234.37 to 6.429/228.42. |

Notes: Tom was in Tucson in January for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #4 with a 6.53 and had an easy first-round win. In the second round, both he and opponent Gene Snow had difficulties getting traction, and Hoover's 6.92 got the win over Snow's 7.13. In the semifinals, Hoover's "Showtime" once again smoked the times, and this time, his 7.52 lost to eventual winner Mike Van Sant's 6.82 in the "Invader." Tom did not race at the NHRA Phoenix Winter Classic, but he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. There, he qualified #9 with a 6.300/211.26. But again, he went up in smoke, and his opening round 8.187/104.04 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.062/219.51. Tom then went to Gainesville in March for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 6.444/214.79 qualified #7, and in the first round, his 6.47/209.30 beat Ed McCulloch's 6.57/207.37. He lost to Bob Pickett's 6.65/221.13 in round two with a 6.74/220.04. In 1976, Green Valley Raceway track owner Bill Heilscher held a series of eight-car AA/FC shows called the 200 mph Funny Car Championships. The third 200 mph FC Championship was held Saturday and Sunday, April 3/4. This event differed from the February and March events, as more than eight booked-in cars appeared, so Saturday was deemed a day of qualifying for an eight-car field on Sunday. On Saturday, Jim Liberman led the field with a 6.04, followed by Hoover at a 6.08 and Bob Pickett at a 6.12 with Top Speed at 231 mph. The rest of the field included Gene Snow, Tom Hoover, Mike Burkhart, Gordon Mineo, and Tripp Shumake. Alternates included Tom Ivo, Al Vanderwoude, and Prock, among others. On Sunday, Liberman (who beat Snow and Shumake) met Hoover (who stopped Mineo and Pickett). In that final, Liberman won with a 5.964/234.98 to Hoover's 5.999/230.76. Pickett ran 235.60 in the first and second rounds for Top Speed. This made Liberman the third FC under 6.00 and Hoover the fourth. Later in April, Hoover was in Kansas City for the AHRA Show Me Nationals. He reached the final at that event by stopping Wilfred Boutilier in the first round with a 6.41. A 6.39 in round two took out Dick Custy, and a 6.35 in the semifinals beat Tom McEwen. He faced Snow in the final. Snow had been running just a little quicker throughout eliminations with a 6.26 best, but the race never came off as Hoover lost oil pressure and shut off, giving Gene a solo for the victory. In May, he was in Tulsa for the AHRA Okie Nationals. He qualified #4 with a 6.81 and lasted until round two, where Dale Emery's 6.65/208 beat his 6.71/217.88. Later in the month, he was runner-up to Snow again at the AHRA Grandnationals at Detroit Dragway. He grabbed a victory at St. Louis on June 6 for the AHRA Springnationals. It was an eight-car field, and his opening round 6.65/217.40 advanced over Jerry Messer's broken Mustang II at 14.24. In the semifinals, his 6.73/210.86 beat Emery, who smoked the tires. For the third time that season, Hoover would face Snow in the final. Once again, Gene had been running quicker during eliminations with a 6.56 best. But this time, Snow overpowered the track and smoked the tires while Hoover ran his best, a 6.53/209.86, to pick up the win. The following week (June 13), he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where he qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field with a 6.635/207.85. He lost a close race against Gary Burgin in the first round, with his 6.604/218.97 falling to Burgin's 6.591/214.79. He was still driving the Vega in July at the AHRA Nationals at Green Valley Raceway. He was quick off the line in his first-round race with Custy as Tom's 6.24 beat Dick's slightly quicker 6.23. He lasted until the semifinals, where his 6.19 lost to Tom Prock's 6.09. Tom's 5.999/232.55 times were among several questionable numbers recorded at Green Valley Race City events. Tom came out with a new Monza at Martin, Michigan, in mid-August for the PHR Championships and raced it throughout the end of the season. | Former Don Prudhomme Vega that Tom Hoover ran from Spring 1974 through mid-Summer 1976 with three different paint schemes. Notes: Tom started the '77 season by running 6.69/214.28 at the PRO event at Beeline on 1/14/77. He qualified #1 at the AHRA Winternationals with a 6.73. A first-round 6.75/206.42 beat Cyril Leon, and in round two, a 6.80 took care of Chris Lane. In the semifinals, both he and Tripp Shumake smoked the tires to identical 7.10s, but Hoover got there first. He lost to John Collins in the final. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he ran well again, lasting until the second round before Raymond Beadle's holeshot in the "Blue Max" beat his 6.19 with a 6.27. On May 1, he was at the AHRA Springnationals. He beat Dave Benjamin in the first round before losing to eventual winner Billy Graham in round two. He qualified #1 at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals in June with a 6.39/216.87. An off pace 7.13/106.90 lost to Gene Snow in the first round. Tom qualified #12 for the NHRA Springnationals, and although he failed to reach the finals, just qualifying was tough, as Ed McCulloch, Jim Liberman, Tommy Ivo, Johnny White, and others failed to qualify. He won the Memorial weekend race at US 131, Martin, Mich., stopping Gary Burgin in the final. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Tom qualified #7 with a 6.27. He beat Frank Mancuso's Vega in the first round, and in round two, a 6.45/216 beat a tire-smoking Burgin. In the semifinals, Hoover had trouble and shut off, giving Don Prudhomme an easy (6.31?) run into the final. Later in July, he won the Division 5 race at Brainerd. Another win came at the AHRA Grandnationals at Dragway 42 on July 31. He qualified #1 with a 6.31/225.00 and in the first round, a 6.45/221.67 beat Stan Bowman. In the semifinals, his 6.58/221.13 beat Graham's quicker 6.55/217. In the final, he took the victory with a 6.30 (Low ET) at 225.00 over Snow's 6.59/193. On August 4, he was back at Englishtown for the Funny Car Race of Champions. All cars ran two runs with the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. Hoover shut off early in his first race and lost to Les Cassidy, while his second race saw him run a 6.55/225 over Gordon Mineo's 6.54. His time wasn't good enough to make the final. He won the NHRA Grandnationals up in Canada. He qualified #2 with a 6.25/223.88 in the eight-car show. A first-round 6.35 beat Al Segrini, and in the semifinals, he singled after Billy Meyer was unable to show after a first-round fire in which Meyer received second-degree burns to his hands. Tom ran a 7.17/122 single to get into the final, where he faced off against all-conquering Don Prudhomme. The "Snake" slipped to a 6.76/172, and that's all it took for Hoover to snag the victory with a 6.24/226.13. The following week (August 14), he was back at US 131 for the PHR Championships. He ran well, beating Denny Savage with a 6.37 in the first round, and he beat Bowman in round two. In the semifinals, a strong 6.20/221 lost to eventual winner Burgin's 6.23/234. His next win came at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals on August 21. He qualified #2 with a 6.50/213, and in the final, he beat Beadle's 6.53 with a 6.40/215. He had a disappointing showing at Indy for the US Nationals when he failed to qualify. Almost 40 cars showed for the sixteen spots, so he was not alone on the outside looking in. He didn't go to Seattle for the Fallnationals, but he did go to Ontario Motor Speedway for the NHRA World Finals. He qualified on the "bump spot" and lost early. Overall, it was a very successful season, probably the best to this point in his racing career. His best NHRA national event times were 6.193/229.59 at the Winternationals. Where did Tom run the 6.17? |

Notes: Hoover was still racing his Monza at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #9, but his 7.23/202 in the first round, lost to low qualifier Tripp Shumake's 7.08/211. His Corvette debuted at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, a best of 6.43/218.97 (first alternate) failed to qualify. He made up for it by winning the Green Valley Raceway Opener. There he had run 6.25/225 to beat Billy Graham's quicker 6.21 in the opening round, and in the semifinal, he set Low ET with a 6.11/232.77 that defeated Gordon Mineo's 6.45. Graham got back into the show on the "break rule," and Billy was Hoover's final round victim. Tom's 6.15/232.77 beat Graham who's Monza got out of shape. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #11 with a 6.47/227. But in round one, he shut down with problems to an 11.29 against eventual winner Dale Pulde. The following weekend (March 19), he went to LaPlace for the NHRA Division 4 opener. His 6.66/210.28 qualified #3. In the opening round, he beat Randy Lackey with a 6.72/206.42. A good light combined with a 6.80/205.47 beat low qualifier, Shumake's quicker 6.78/224. He then met up with Billy Meyer in the final. Meyer got the win, running 6.71/218 to beat Hoover's 6.81/204.08 runner-up effort. He was back at Green Valley on April 16 for the second NHRA Division 4 race. A 6.29/223.32 qualified #3. Chip Woodall fouled against him in round one, and Tom advanced with a 6.40/214.79. But he smoked the tires and shut off to 8.97/91.00 in the semifinal that lost to eventual winner Gene Snow's 6.26/215. On April 30, Hoover was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He qualified #2 in the eight-car show with a 6.50 and lasted until the semifinals before he smoked the tires and lost to Tom Anderson. He was at Tulsa the following week (May 7) for the AHRA Springnationals, where his 6.90/212.76 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. A 6.81/214.28 in round one, beat Lee Beard, but in the semifinals, he and Shumake and a close race with Tripp's 6.71/218 coming out on top over his 6.73/216.34. His next stop was at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals, where a 6.61/219.52 qualified #3. He beat Larry Gould's SOHC-powered Mustang in round one, with a 6.62/220.05 (Top Speed). He and Tom McEwen smoked the tires in the semifinals, with McEwen's 7.16 winning over his 7.25. The NHRA Springnationals did not go well for Hoover. Tom had just made a qualifying pass at 229 mph when his blower backfired. It caused the fuel tank to explode, and the car turned into a fireball as it continued down the track. The fire burned up all the oxygen, and Hoover felt that he would pass out. So at 40 mph, he bailed out the side window of the car. The car must not have been burnt bad as he returned to competition at Alamo Dragway the following week (June 18) for the AHRA Nationals. A 6.41/215 qualified #4, and in round one, his 6.48/205 beat Billy Graham. A 6.42 in the semifinals failed to beat McEwen's 6.36. His next stop was at Brainerd early in July for the US Funny Car Championships. On Saturday, he raced Don Prudhomme and his 6.52/220.58 lost to the "Snake's" 6.54/227. On Sunday, the eight cars raced for the win. Hoover's 6.41/214.83 defeated Lee Beard in the opening round, and a 6.35/229.00 beat Bob Pickett's 6.65/218 in the semifinal. Once again, he faced Prudhomme, but it was in the final for all the marbles this time. Tom led wire to wire with his 6.27/231.36 getting the victory over Don's 6.30/230 in a close race. At the Byron Funny Car Championships, he and Ron Colson driving the "Hawaiian" both ran 6.44 (Hoover at 230.17) in the opening round, but Colson got to the stripe first. He was at Kansas City for the AHRA Show Me Nationals. And while he didn't win, he did run a best of 6.37 and set Top Speed of the meet at 222.70. Englishtown was the next stop on the calendar for the NHRA Summernationals. Hoover's 6.21/234.98 qualified #12. Unfortunately, he fouled against John Lombardo in the first round. He then went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnational Molson. This was only an eight-car show, and his 6.20/228.42 qualified #3. But once again, he fouled in the opening round. This time he ran 6.41/229.59 while his opponent, Tom McEwen, won with a 6.23/225. The following week (August 12), found the "Showtime" at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. 21 cars ran the first-round, with only the eight lowest ET's advancing into the first-round of competition. Hoover's 6.28 got him the #7 spot for the show. In round one, he improved to 6.25/224.43 to beat Rick Johnson's 6.34/207 in the "Bear Town Shaker." In the semifinal, eventual winner Prudhomme's 6.10/210 put Hoover's 6.32/190.27 on the trailer. August 20 found Tom at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals. It was another eight-car field, and his 6.37/222.76 qualified #3. An opening round 6.50/226 defeated Jim White's 6.72, and a 6.39/225.00 beat Billy Graham's 6.51/216 in the semifinal. He faced the "Blue Max" driven by Raymond Beadle in the final. In their race, Tom's 6.36/221.12 finished runner-up to the "Max's" 6.29/229. |

Notes: Photo from Pomona, CA 1979. | Tom had a great year in '79, especially the early part of the season. He started the year by winning the AHRA Winternationals over Gary Burgin, and then he went to Pomona for NHRA's Winternationals where he qualified #8 with a 6.26/229. He ran 6.24 and 6.18 in the first two rounds on the way to meeting Tripp Shumake in the semifinals.
